Lame Duck Girardi
Would you extend Joe G. as he heads into the final year of his 3 year contract?
Are you happy with the way he's handled the roster, the lineup, the bullpen and the rotation?
If you don't extend Girardi now, are you looking to replace him? Lou Piniella is a free agent after 2010, Tony Pena is on the bench, and Willie Randolph is out there.

We would have gone much further in the playoffs without him
Seriously, what has he done wrong? In 2008, he went through his “learning curve.” In 2009 I thought he did a better job, and he had better players. I’m not aware of any issues he has with the players (a sign in and of itself that he’s running the clubhouse effectively), and he seems to handle the bullpen better than that other Joe guy ever did.
I thought the World Series handling of the pitching staff was masterful, even though I wanted to see more of Robertson in strikeout situations, I can’t complain about the result.
I can’t think of anything overlty stupid he’s either done or said. On the contrary, he’s obviously very thoughtful and he plans ahead. I would hardly think anyone could argue to the contarry. Why wouldn’t his contract be renewed?

Ha!
What a great subject….I don’t even think I need to read the rest of this one….thanks for getting me to bed quicker tonight. Love PA though!
RE: We would have gone much further in the playoffs without him
I wish we could continue to just show up and play for no reason. No umpires, no scorers. Just show up and have fun.

Girardi
The last time the Yankees replaced a manager of a world series team the Yankees went on a 12 year slide. Come on you can come up with better posts.. For one possibility I would like to know how the Yankees are doing with international signings.
I think there’s a legit conversation to be had around- if the Yanks get bounced in the first round in 2010, would you consider bringing in Sweet Lou?
Thanks for the idea about int’l signings. I’ll poke around the interwebs and see what I can come up with.

For Joe to be shown the door
there would have to be a complete implosion – miss the playoffs, a .500 or worse record – but not merely a first-round exit. As we all know, anythng can happen in a short series. The best team doesn’t always win.
Sweet Lou’s record hasn’t been too sweet. Imagine managing the Yankees, being favored in playoff series and losing six games consecutively. If for some reason Girardi should be fired I hope that we can do better Lou who, in my opinion, Is a has been.
What series could the Yankees lose six
consecutive games in?

Did we not
lose 4 straight to the Sux after being up 3-0 and maybe lose the first 2 in the playoffs in ‘05? I don’t remember and I don’t feel like researching cuz it don’t matter!
Wondering...
What the Yanks policy is on that kind of thing? With players, they always say they won’t renegotiate until the current contract is up- does that go for managers as well? If so, then they wouldn’t really talk contract with Girardi until season’s end.
I don’t see at this point how Girardi isn’t back next year and beyond. It would have to take some sort of colossal scandal to lead to his ousting. The way I see it, the only way the Yanks don’t compete this year would be due to a rash of injuries, in which case the blame couldn’t really fall on the manager’s shoulders- especially one who has led the team to a championship the year prior. Unless of course he is to blame for the injuries- in which case that would be the scandal previously mentioned.
Bottom line- Girardi will be back.
I think he should be re-signed.
Regardless of the perception of him out there..and the perception of other managers…Joe G is damn good.
I mean, anyone who’s not an Angel fan will say how good Scioscia is…yet, Angels fans (at least the ones that are bearable somewhat to read…) will say he makes a lot of dumb moves too.
Joe G needs to be signed.
F Pinella..what’s he ever won?

I'm a Joe G Fan
I don’t understand how you could NOT bring him back…The guy just guided the team to a WS championship. Let’s not forget that the team started slow without A-Rod and Joe kept them positive and focused through the media storm that was following them everywhere they went.
3 years, 18MM for Joe
Ross
And I don't wanna hear that anyone would've won the champ this year with this squad.
They’ve been spending money out of their asshole since they lost the series in 2001, and haven’t won every year.
Joe G…kinda like Phil Jackson, tamed the ego’s well as well as all the other crap. It worked.
How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?
this is a joke i assume?
i imagine you are kidding even asking. a manager who is respected and liked by his team of highly paid superstars and who guided them to a world series victory being replaced? maybe we should just get 2004 era joe torre back instead. and bring kenny lofton and sheffield in to join the coaching staff.
I would re-sign him, but other people could have felt differently. A lot of people want a manager with more fire.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I don't know, he definitely has some fire

Doesn’t show it all that often, but he can really show fire if he wants to.
I remember when this happened
Giambi had just struck out on a clearly checked swing with runners in scoring position as we were starting to get back into that game. Ugh bad flashbacks. I’m not sure about the precise record (Maybe jscape can look into that) but I’m pretty sure the Yankees are undefeated when Joe gets thrown out. Now we just need Joe to channel his inner Bobby Cox and watch the trophies stack up

Joe G - Great Managing
I hope the the Yankee organization will renew Joe’s contract for another three years. He did an outstanding job in getting that team into the play-offs and become WS Champs again. As a former catcher, he called great games and lost a few.
I would have liked to have seen more squeeze plays, suicide bunts and changing pitchers a little sooner. But he called the shots and it paid off. He took the talent he had, worked with new pitchers and was able to mold a chanmpionsjip team. ARod hit when it was crucial, compared to his past play-off record. They scored runs when they needed it and stole bases when it countered.
I would like to see him develop and play Gardner more this season, after-all, he did beat out Melky for the CF spot and if it weren’t for his injury, would have had more times at bat to improve his hitting. If they pick-up Nady, they can platoon between the two in LF or Nady/Swisher in RF.
Wish Joe good luck in the 2010 season.
"I think he should have changed pitchers a little sooner"
I don’t think you’ll find many people that will agree with you on that one. That might be the only thing he does TOO much.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

While I don't like his matchup style, the Devil you know...
And I think the thing I really respect about Girardi is he’s willing to change and learn. He was wound to tight in ’08. He loosened up in ’09. He found guys he trusted after some mistakes in the ALCS, and rode those guys in the WS. He made many of us (me included) look foolish by proving you could go with a 3-man rotation.
He won a ring and they’re in a good position to win another. Give him 3 more years with a raise.
That should be "bullpen matchup style"

I really thought he overmanaged
at some points during the playoffs. I was at bars screaming at the TV, he just retired the last two batters without them getting a good swing let alone contact, why are you taking him out!

But I do think that he managed the bullpen great all year long
to that point. It was just in the playoffs when he stopped doing the things that made the team so successful which left me scratching my head.

What he did better than Torre...
Was he knew how to pace his players, especially the bullpen, throughout the season.
Though I don’t think he really understands the “feel” of when to take your intuition over the “binder”…I hope the ALCS taught him the difference.

Girardi is not a good manager...
He clearly was outmanaged by Scioscia in the ALCS, and made me very angry. Luckily, his excellent players—-especially the veterans—-bailed him out. He is a micromanager and a bit of a nerd.
2008’s struggles wasn’t from Girardi’s “learning curve.” They brought in Sabathia and Burnett at the front of the rotation, and replaced Giambi with Teixeira. Even more importantly, they were able to keep Posada, Matsui, and Damon healthy practically the whole year—-they really missed those guys for extended stretches last year. I would give Girardi some of the credit for that, except that it took A-Rod speaking up for him to get a day off after Girardi played him for a whole month straight—-coming off hip surgery!
Management will keep him around because he’s the guy they wanted and he does what he’s told. He learned his lesson in Florida I suppose.
If I were the Yankees top level brass, I would offer the job to David Cone.
The guy just won a World Championship
and he’s liked by the players, good with the media, and seems to have a good sense on how to manage a bullpen. Why not bring him back?
I say resign him. Especially if he wins the Fall Classic again this upcoming season. Give him a three year extension.
The only people
I would consider if for some insane reason Joe Girardi quit/got fired (they shouldn’t, he shouldn’t, but saying he did/they did) is Tony Pena and Joe Torre
Obviously 0% chance for Torre, so that leaves Pena with Miley becoming bench coach and Tony Franklin moving up to AAA.
I do not want that to happen, at all. That would be my move if I HAD to fire Girardi
Writer for Pinstripe Alley.
"Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth."
"So I close in saying that I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for."
He made me mad at points with his managing. But i thought he brought a toughness to the management position that has not been there for some time. He wasn’t afraid of Socia and his fat finger. Didn’t fear the Redsox especially after the start we had against them. He is tough and he will face anyone and brings that to his players.
Yankees need a COMPLETE implosion to even consider this
Resign him before his contract’s up, far before
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
Where are my manners....
FIRE GIRARDI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How come China can't vote David Lee for All-Star?
He bunts too often; he doesn't start the runners enough
and he has a strange loyalty to horrible pitchers who pitched for the Marlins for him. He’s got funny ears. Otherwise, he’s ok.
Joe is learning
As he did from 2008. There is no reason to believe that he will not continue that trend. He learned from his mistakes in the ALCS and played his go-to guys in the Series. After all, we won, didn’t we?
"If you pop one, you pop one." - Nick Johnson
I didn't realize
That 2010 was the last year on Girardi’s contract. He should get an extension before spring training, I mean Torre got a huge extension after losing the world series in 2003.

I like the yr to yr type of deal
That keeps the pressure on right now.Girardis book is far from over and no one knows the end.He could be great or he could be Cito Gaston a guy hired to manage the clubhouse so that all the talent stays on the field.I personally do not like his way but he has been learning and came a long way in just two yrs.The experience from winning it all is priceless, but make no mistake there is always someone better, and circumstances change and you do not want Lou Holtz of the 80s coaching in todays game.So 2-3 yrs is just right.

is this a serious post
like i understand you’re trying to have like new topics and stuff but like we just won the world series. we arent getting rid of him, he’ll get a contract, this conversation is outrageous. what has lou piniella ever won as a manager? like seriously i know that there isnt much else to talk about in the offseason right now but this is such a desperate post. anyone who thinks we should get rid of girardi or thinks that he will be gone is very uninformed and just flat out unintelligent. its not as easy as it looks to manage a team to a WS title.
There are only 3 active managers with more wins that
Lou Piniella. It was noted above by PortlandYankee that he won a ring with the ’90 Reds. I am not saying that Joe Girardi should be fired, but saying that Piniella has never won anything or is unproven is a bad argument.
I think Girardi should be given a fair chance at staying, and I think to really have a fair chance he needs a contract extension. There were grumblings beginning during the slow start of the Yankees when they couldn’t seem to get over .500 and if he was in the last year of his contracts he might not have made it through the season. A season that all of us admit he did a pretty good job, afterall the Yankees won the World Series.

Joe G
I think we have a manager who’s going to be here for awhile. I gotta admit there was a time last year when we weren’t hitting I just wanted to kill him. I kept thinking we needed to play some small ball. Joe just waited it out and the slump ended. He seems to handle the job well. It cant be easy knowing your getting bashed by a couple million fans when your teams in a slump. He’s got the temperment for the job, and he’s also got a cockiness to him. He’s enjoys being the manager of the worlds best team. I would think they’ll work something out at spring training, maybe another 3 yrs.
We should
bring back Joe Torre. Our bullpen looks too rested and healthy and the ALCS and WS games cut into my regular TV viewing.
Girardi did an Outstanding Job in 2010
Girardi has become an excellent manager
Who can argue with success & a world championship
I would wait to see how 2010 plays out and if another WS championship then five year extension, AL championship then 3 years; Regular season division championship then 2 years; no playoff appearance- one year.

Why is this even a post?
Of course you bring him back. He just won the world series. That’s one reason. The other reason i can think of is…….DUH!
Give him another 3 year deal NOW!
They picked the right guy. He’s a keeper. The Yankees shouldn’t show its complete confidence and resign him now with a nice salary kicker.
I love Pinella but he’s not proven to be a manager that can bring home a world series. Pena isn’t going anywhere. He should be re-signed as the Yankee bench coach at the same time.
Giradi has heart, guts, nerve and the intellectual honesty to become one of the greatest Yankee Managers of all time.

Extend Joe
Extend him! I have disagreed on occasion, such as permitting CC to face Utley again before the 2nd HR in game 5. But every manager, like every player will make errors. Joe is young and seems to let the stress roll off him. At this point, I hope he can match Walter Alston or at least Casey Stengel for longevity.
