The Roster
According to Chris Singleton:
Jerry Hairston in serious talks with Yanks. Spell Jeter and Rodriguez and platoon in left possibly. Strong interest from Yanks. Clubhouse +
JHJ could be the last piece of the major league club.
Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Vazquez, Hughes.
Rivera, Chamberlain, Robertson, Marte, Aceves, Melacon, Mitre.
Posada, Teixeira, Cano, Rodriguez, Jeter, Gardner, Granderson, Swisher, Johnson.
Cervelli, Hairston, Pena, Hoffman.
I don't think the Yanks would go with a 12 man staff for the season, but for the first month while arm strength builds, and considering that Gardner is the only player you might want to pinch hit for. Juan Miranda is the only home run threat on the 40 man right now, and he's only going to show moderate power. I'd carry 12 pitchers for now.

Agreed
except with….
Joba to the rotation, Hughes to the pen
Gaudin over Mitre
And also, Melancon doesn’t get his spot automatically. Edwar Ramirez, Melancon, and others will compete for that last job I think.
really?
I could have sworn he was with the team. Well if he isn’t, there are still pitchers in AAA that I would like over Mitre.
they must have done something with him they were trying to trade him

Gaudin
Gaudin’s still on the team. The Yankees offered him arbitration so they’ll either sign him to a contract before then or go to arbitration. They could always trade him.

?
How Hoffman will be on the opening day roster is beyond me. Surely somebody from the Minors, Miranda for example, should get a shot at some playing time. Hoffman is about as unimpressive as it gets…
He’s the only one on the roster who can back up all 3 outfield spots.

I'll believe it when I see it
I still don’t see the Yankees going into the season with only Granderson, Swisher, Gardner, Hoffman and Hairston as potential outfielders. They may not sign someone big but I think they’ll sign someone to give themselves more depth. Right now any injury to the starting lineup would really hurt.

Agreed. I don’t think any of the bullpen are automatic after Mo, Joba and Marte.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
I wouldn’t promise him a spot. He earned a shot last postseason, and he’ll be at the top of the heap. But if he has an awful spring while everyone else is stellar, I won’t want him coming north.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Understood. I’m willing to bet he makes the team and can’t see him falling off a cliff.

Seems someone has been forgotten?
Left field:
Looks like Yankees will add another right handed bat. Xavier Nady is the best choice. Hits for good power and average. Potentially to be starting in outfield. But, until Johnny Damon is signed he will be considered an option. Still a possibility that Sergio Mitre or Chad Gaudin might be traded for a outfielder. Not many right-handed outfielders with power left on free agent market.
Xavier Nady and Johny Damon
Johny Damon would be ideal if we could sign him for a 1 year contact but that would ask a lot from Boras to do that. Nady was great when he was healthy and it looks like he should be back to normal. Those two are out best options. Im good with both because both will produce like they have in the past
i like nady. lineup would be:
jeter
johnson
tex
a-rod
posada
granderson
swisher
nady
cano, thats a GOOD lineup
Agree
I like that lineup but i like this one the best
1. Jeter
2. Johnson
3. Texeria
4. Rodriguez
5. Posada
6. Granderson
7. Cano
8. Nady
9. Swisher
I like 7 8 9 this way because Cano has always been our 7 hitter and doing well there. Nady gets on base and hits with average. This would allow 9 Swisher to drive them in and hopefully set the table for the top of the order
Hmmm
Its a good thought and that could work. I just like Granderson 6 because of the people ahead and behind him so they are going to have to pitch to him. That gives him a lot of opportunities to drive in a ton of runs for the Yankees
Assuming we sign a right handed outfield bat like Reed Johnson
The lineup should be
vs. righties
Jeter
N. Johnson
Tex
Arod
Granderson
Posada
Cano
Swisher
Gardner
vs. leftes
Jeter
N. Johnson
Tex
Arod
Posada
Swisher
Cano
R. Johnson
Granderson

Absolutely
This lineup is going to cause a lot of problems for opposing pitchers. As long as we stay healthy we are going to be a tough team to beat
True
But then Nady hits right and Swish switch hits so i don’t see it as a problem. We just need Granderson to hit lefties better and it won’t be an issue
CC
They said CC is working with him and talking about how to approach hitting lefties. So hopefully that works
now with damon, the lineup is:
jeter
damon
tex
a-rod
posada
johnson
granderson
swisher
cano
I like it
Im just curious to see where he would put Johnson if we get Damon. Hes a big time OBP guy and it makes sense putting him in front of granderson who has some pop in his bay. I like that lineup alot
9th maybe?
gets on base in front of the top of the order. Then again, Jeter does have some DP problems….. I don’t know, but it would be a good problem to have. I would do
Jeter
Damon
Teixeira
A-Rod
Posada
Cano
Swisher
Granderson
Johnson
Keeping JHJ would be a good move
but I wouldn’t keep Mitre over Gaudin, and Melancon isn’t automatic either.
Anybody in the mood for a repeat?

Mitre
Im not a big fan of him. Gaudin did a great job filling in when we need him too. Hairston adds a pretty good all round player coming off the bench
Absolutely... Mitre & Melancon will be at AAA after Spring Training
I do not expect Mitre or Melancon to make the 25 man roster out of spring training
Gaudin will battle for #5 starter & long relief.
Damon & Hairston will eventually sign a low cost one year contracts.

why is everyone batting Posada 5th?
this is not the Posada of 2007
Posada should be 6th
1. Jeter
2. Johnson
3. Teixeira
4. Rodriguez
5. Granderson
6. Posada
7. Cano
8. Swisher
9. Gardner
That way the lineup goes R L S R L S L S L. This protects against lefties coming out of the bullpen. Also, Posada still has some pop in his bat, which would provide some protection for Granderson. Granderson’s power also protects Rodriguez. Pitchers will have to pitch to everyone if they want to win.
To the person that suggested Nick Johnson bat 9th. That wouldn’t work, because Jeter hits into too many double plays, which is why it works to have a speedster like Gardner in that spot.
Awesome Line-up... But
If Damon resigns on a one year low cost deal, what would your line-up be with Damon in the mix?
by YANKEES FOREVER on Jan 11, 2010 3:04 PM EST up reply actions
12 pitchers out of spring training?
Traditional thinking usually has it that you need fewer pitchers in April, because of rain days, and those late season double headers haven’t had a chance to pile up.
12 pitchers ever?
If Vasquez pitches 200 innings, that’s one less long arm needed in the pen. If Gaudin and Mitre (yuck) are in that pen, 4 others (Rivera, Robertson, Hughes, Marte) should only have to cover a total of 2 innings or less in most games.
Last year both Chamberlain and Mitre got blasted with regularity before they got through the 5th inning. (OK, so Chamberlain was rarely awful, but he threw a ton of pitches). I really don’t see that with this year’s rotation. Therefore, one less arm should suffice.
I would rather see a bat off the bench. Cervelli, when he plays, Gardner, and perhaps Granderson against tough lefties all present pinch hitting opportunities. Also, people do go on the 15 day DL from time to time.
by designatedquitter on Jan 11, 2010 12:21 PM EST reply actions
When Cervelli plays Jorge will be available to pinch hit.
I would expect Granderson to simply have a day off against a tough lefty.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Not good enough
Still need a bat off the bench. If Posada hits for Cervelli, you have no 3rd (emergency) catcher. Also, at Posada’s age, maybe a day off should be an actual entire day off.
If Granderson has the day off, it’s the bat off the bench that I want to fill in, not Jamie Hoffman.
During the first half of last year, on “days off” the bottom 3 in the order were often National- League- like automatic outs – Cervelli, Cody Ransom (remember him?) Angel Berroa ( or him?) and Gardner.
That’s why Eric Hinske, and to a lesser extent Hairston, were added. If you do the math, Vasquez’s extra innings added, plus an expected 30 or so more innings from Chamberlain equal the output of one bullpen arm at least. This upgrade is the perfect opportunity to add a bat. Not necessarily a good all-around player, but a true offensive threat off the bench.
