Two Minor Footnotes: Dylanology, Rickey, and Honest Abe

I note that while I was away, Jay made reference to the great Bob Dylan/Band Basement Tapes song "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere." He linked to the song's Wikipedia page, but he didn't give you the song itself, an unforgivable oversight given (1) how many great versions are available and (2) Stephani Bee still hasn't succumbed to Dylan and we must keep trying to educate her before she gets too old to learn anything new. Here's a rollicking live version by the Swell Season (IE Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the couple from "Once").

Second matter: back when I published Six Degrees of Rickey Henderson and concluded that "Using managers, one could probably connect Henderson to Abraham Lincoln," I was really hoping someone would call me on it, but no one ever did. I would have done it something like this: Cap Anson, who I had already connected to Rickey in five steps, played in the National Association in 1871 with several guys who were Civil War veterans. Assuming they fought for the Union, they would have been in a unit that ultimately reported to Ulysses Grant or William Sherman or Phil Sheridan, etcetera, etcetera. Those generals "played" for President Lincoln. The number of steps would have depended on the number of officers between the player and the Commander in Chief. For example, Al Barker, fleetingly a teammate of Anson's at Rockford, served from 1861 to 1863 and achieved the rank of second lieutenant, fighting with the Army of the Cumberland at the Battle of Murfreesboro. Ah, trivia.
