Could today be Derek Jeter's historic day?

Could today be the day Derek Jeter surpasses Lou Gehrig as the New York Yankees' all-time hits leader. Jeter needs just four more hits to surpass the legendary first baseman.

There are Jeter appreciation posts all over the place today.

I can't say much that isn't already being said about Jeter. Use this an Open Thread to discuss Jeter's accomplishments.

We stubhubbed tickets for both games.
It’s moments like these that will make the new place feel like home- the 4 game sweep of the Sox, this, and then the playoffs.

I sure hope not

because I really want to see it! And I can’t go to either of todays games. I can go to the game tomorrow though, so I REALLY hope that Jeter saves his historic day until tomorrow.

Derek Jeter is everything

That is right with baseball. A class act all the way. He’s worked hard, been a great teammate, and has given us some great memories. And when the whole sports media has been saying he’s lost a step, he goes out and has the best season of his career. He deserves to break this record, cause he is not a Yankee, he is the Yankees. And whenever he breaks this record, be it today, jascape is hoping, or tomorrow, I will be watching. And even though I’ve only teared up a handful of times in my life, it will be tough to watch this one with dry eyes. Congrats Derek, congrats Yankee organization, and congrats fans!

I hope it's tonight

because I got tickets to the game off stubhub.

Growing up a Yankee fan in the 80s, during the depths of the Stump Merrill/Dallas Green teams, if you had told me that I’d have a chance to watch someone get more hits than Lou Gehrig, I wouldn’t have believed it. Of course, if you had told me I’d be talking about it on an “internet” I wouldn’t have believed that, so maybe I have no vision.

Derek Jeter should be the leader

Derek Jeter represents everything to me that I have witnessed as a yankee fan. I started watching the Yankees when I was a kid during the ’95 season. I have spent all of my watching years with Derek as shortstop and am very excited to see him become the all time leader. This isnt a depressing event like bonds breaking the home run record =) this is a Yankee hero becoming the new leader and legend that Gehrig was and is. Go JETER!!

Geez, bunch of young guys posting here

I’ve been a Yankee fan my whole life, which goes back to the Mickey Mantle days.
Derek Jeter is one of the all-time Yankee greats. He’s right up there with Ruth and Gehrig and Mantle. It has been a pure pleasure to follow his career.
And in addition to talent, he has Class!
Looking forward to seeing his plaque in Monument Park.

#2 my hero

I’ve been a fan of Jeter since his debut. the first yankee game I ever witnessed was Jeter’s debut agains the Mariners in ’95. at the time I was 3 yet til this day I still clearly remember it and remember my uncle tellin me…“this guy is gonna be something great”. Since that day, Derek Jeter has been my idol. thank you Derek for being such a great athlete and defining what it means to be a Yankee to this generation of fans. Someday I can tell my children n grandchildren I grew up and watched the greatest athlete ever.

It's nice

to see that we have some older Yankee fans with us here. Now I don’t feel quite so much like the old man around here. LOL!!

I go back to the 1960 team

and Jeeter is indeed one of the great Yankees players of all time. I also have the benefit of being a 3rd generation fan, so I got to hear about players of long ago from my father and grandfather. I also recall when Jeet first came up that the Scooter said, " He could have played with us." Very unusual for an older player to say that. Usually guys would say Aw he ’s good, but….. Also remember that Scooter had seen a player or two come down the pike.

Jeter

Everyone knows that once you near a record that is so historical and meaningful to Jeter and the who Yankee organization, that there is a lot of pressure and emotions that are dragging down on him. We all know that he will get it, and I hope that he can do it at home. Jeter might not be the statistical leader, but he is a class act and a wonder capt.
