The Joba Reality

Assuming the Yankees clinch the division quickly enough to rest everyone...

Check it out:

ALDS A                                             ALDS B

Game Starter Date Days Rest Game Starter Date Days Rest
1 CC 7 4+ 1 CC 8 4+
2 AJ 9 4+ 2 AJ 9 4+
3 Andy 11 4+ 3 Andy 11 4+
4 CC 12 4 4 CC 12 3
5 AJ 14 4 5 AJ 14 4

ALCS (if it goes less than 5 games, it just gives us extra time to set up the rotation)

Game Starter Date Days Rest
1 CC 16 3
2 Andy 17 5
3 AJ 19 4
4 CC 20 3
5 Andy 22 4
6 AJ 24 4
7 CC 25 4

World Series

Game Starter Date Days Rest
1 Andy 28 5
2 CC 29 4
3 AJ 31 5
4 Andy 1 3
5 CC 2 3
6 AJ 4 3
7 Andy 5 3

I understand starting Joba in the ALCS with a 3-0 or 3-1 lead.  I'll concede that he may be necessary for WS Game 4.

But other than that...

I don't mind this postseason if they use him out of the bullpen

in the postseason you tend to shorten your pitching rotation to your 3 (maybe occasionally 4) best starters. To win this year I’d rather start Andy, CC, or AJ.

So, this season, Joba’s best contribution to a world series may come out of the bullpen. So, once we make the playoffs, we do whatever is necessary to win this year. I don’t think anyone is arguing about that.

What we’re (some of us anyway) are saying is that down the road Joba belongs in the rotation. If that’s not the point that you were trying to make and I just dragged up the Joba starter/reliever debate then I will fully understand it if you banish me onto a glacier with Curt Schilling and Charlie Manson.

Remember...

CC has never performed well in the playoffs. It might be more prudent to keep Joba in the rotation so everyone gets their proper rest.

I’d like to see CC get his last start of the regular season off so he can rest up. He’s been leaned on entirely too much down the stretch of his career.

Give that last start to Aceves or Hughes.

to NYMike

As far as CC not doing well in the playoffs, keep in mind that he played for Cleveland. This year it’s the Yankees. That’s a big difference.

This is actually a really good idea

You could probably start Joba in Game 4 of the ALCS if you’re up in the series.

The worst part of this is that my sister is getting married, at night, the same day as the potential Game 7 of the ALCS…..

CC and Rest

This seems like the first time in a few seasons that CC hasn’t had to make a serious playoff push (pitching complete games on zero rest) which I feel is why is flames out in the post-season. Hopefully he’ll be able to make that push a month later.

3 days rest = no-no

The Yankees will most likely take the ALDS-A format so we can use a 3-man rotation on full rest in round 1. After that, though, the 3-days rest idea has failed a lot more often than it’s succeeded in recent times. It’d be an especially bad idea with Pettitte at his age. It’s better to just let Joba start game 4 of the ALCS and WS knowing that he’ll probably keep us in the game but not give us much length than have the other 3 starters at a diminished capacity.

playoff rotation

pettite and aj will need all the rest they can get in between starts. the reality is that aj has been terrible over his last several starts. If he cant get his arm rested enough for the playoffs, Joba will have to step it up. Once again our success in the post season falls on our starting pitchers. I think we should get everyone in the rotation an extra day of rest whenever possible as the end of the season nears.

Your rest days are not calculated right and

and Andy would start the ALCS which would be the 5th day also. It’s not 5 days rest but every 5th day they pitch!

by Tricon11 on Sep 3, 2009 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

I tried to be careful calculating the rest. Where’d I mess up?

Andy would have 5 days rest if they pushed him back to start game 2. I want CC to pitch 3 times (if needed, if we get passed the first round), so I make sure he starts game 1. It’s not an error, it’s a plan.

Sorry

I thought you were reffering 5 days of rest is what they should have.

You may not want to start C.C. or A.J. LMAO!

A.J. Burnett – No post season record

C.C. Sabathia – 3 Seasons (4 Series) 5 games 2 W 3 L 25.0 IP ERA 7.92

Andy Pettitte -
11 Seasons (25 Series) 35 games 14W 9L 218.1 IP ERA 3.96

Last Game Pitched Post Season vs. Clev. 2007 ALDS
6.1 IP ERA .000 – The pitcher who blew the game, without giving up a hit, Joba Chamberlain in the 8th.Walked the first batter, wild pitched him to 2nd, next batter sacrificed him to 3rd, and another Wild pitch scored the run.
Yanks lose in the 11th, 2 to 1. The one Yankee run, Melky hit a HR in the 3rd.

Don't bring up that stuff! Its a f*cking jinx!

Are you crazy, man??? We’re having our best year, arguably, since 1998, and you’re bring up the fact that some of our guys haven’t performed well in the past in the postseason? Well DUH if they stink it up, we probably aren’t going to win, but there’s no reason to imply there’s a greater than average chance they WILL stink it up.

by jdorr on Sep 4, 2009 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Why does it matter that AJ Burnett has no postseason record

He’s pitched almost 1600 innings, faced 6500 batters, and thrown somewhere around 23,000 pitches in the big leagues, all with an ERA that’s 10% better than league average.

But once the calender changes to October, he forgets how to pitch?

by 3460kuri on Sep 4, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

That's not what I was implying

What I said is A.J. has no post season experience, and C.C. has a little.
Actually Joba has more experience, 2.1 innings, than A.J., who has none.
Andy has a season worth of post games and it may be a good idea to start Andy.
Plus the fact the Yanks should be home to start each series.

by Tricon11 on Sep 4, 2009 6:20 AM EDT reply actions

You want facts fine

Andy’s pitched 2899 reg. season innings and 218.1 post season, total 3117.1
Batters Faced 13,119. Lifetime winning percentage .629

Again I am not saying A.J. or C.C. will not do will, I was just pointing out Andy has done well in post season with plenty of experience. And he has done well pitching at home in post season.
If Andy is not there best pitcher, which of course by age he is not, would it not make sense to get the first win of the series then pitch C.C. and A.J.
Would that not take pressure off of C.C. and A.J. and put it on the other team?
Not that this will happen, I am sure they will pitch C.C. first, But sometimes a manager has to take a chance, that won’t happen here ROTFLMAO!

by Tricon11 on Sep 4, 2009 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Right now the Yanks got two pitchers they can take to the bank. Sabbathia and Pettite. You never know what you are going to get with Burnett and Joba. Can’t even talk about a 5th starter because we don’t have one. We need to take extra batting practice!
