Game 157: Six to go...

Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees, Sep 28, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Next Game

Kansas City Royals
@ New York Yankees

Monday, Sep 28, 2009, 7:05 PM EDT
Yankee Stadium

Luke Hochevar vs Chad Gaudin

Partly cloudy, rain. Winds blowing out to left field at 15-20 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 70.

Complete Coverage >

I'm just going to sit back, relax, and enjoy what I can from this game. Absolutely no pressure tonight. It's our fifth starter going, with homefield advantage already clinched. We'll probably see a lot of rookies and September call-ups: Pena, Cervelli, Shelley, Miranda, Guzman, etc. It'll be a chance for them to show that they belong on next year's roster.

The pitching matchup actually has some interesting characteristics. Luke Hochevar was the first overall draft pick in 2006. Chad Gaudin was the 1009th overall pick in 2001. Both are 26 years old. Gaudin has had a significantly better career. His ERA+ is 93. Hochevar's is 78. Gaudin is also having a better 2009. Just goes to show how inexact the projection of future baseball players is.

wouldn't it be funny

if Boston chokes and doesn’t make the playoffs?

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is that still possible? Would they have to really pull a Mets?

because I just wet myself a little imagining it.

Just looked it up

Their magic number to clinch the WC is 2 with 7 games left to play.

We will be seeing them in October.

Did Michael Kay actually say...

…that they have to wait it out as long as possible because this is KC’s only trip to the Bronx?

Who cares if they don’t make up one of these games, the Yanks have clinched everything they can clinch, and the Royals are the effing Royals.

by New York Sports Jerk on Sep 28, 2009 7:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They need to play every game

if they don’t, people will say it’s an “unfair advantage” because the Yanks get a day to rest everyone instead of playing, while other teams who have clinched still have to play.

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's pretty stupid

but it’s true. This is like last year against the Blow Sux on the last game of the year. Everything was done. Everything was clinched. Mussina got his 20 wins. Everyone got their milestones. The season was over. But they needed to play so the Sux didn’t get extra rest before the playoffs.

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

that that is what the windbags at RSN ESPN would say, but it’s a terrible argument. From this point onward, we can rest whoever we want whenever we want.

We do have an unfair advantage tho….we’re the Yankees and they’re the Royals

Facial LaFleur, total facial.

by Lord Duggan on Sep 28, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Technically...

…but with everything wrapped up, the Yankees can rest everyone anyway.

Obviously if the weather cooperates the game should be played, but if it keeps raining all night there’s no reason to wait it out.

by New York Sports Jerk on Sep 28, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

any idea what our lineup is? Is it all backups? Or are we just letting Cervelli play every position?

Facial LaFleur, total facial.

by Lord Duggan on Sep 28, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude...that would be amazingly unfair

New York Cervellis 243
KC Royals -4

Cervelli would even kick the hell out of Ditka.

by New York Sports Jerk on Sep 28, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cervelli wouldn't give up runs

Yanks- any number to Cervelli’s liking
Royals- 0 (a number to ALL our liking)

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh my bad

didn’t see that.

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's all good

Cervelli wouldn’t be satisfied with a shutout.

Mortals get shutouts, Cervelli gets the other team to concede runs just to end the humiliation.

Is it a mini Ditka?

or would he be full grown?

Facial LaFleur, total facial.

by Lord Duggan on Sep 28, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously full grown...

…Mini Ditka would get killed by Cervelli.

To level the playing field, it should be mini Cervelli vs. Ditka AND a Hurricane.

by New York Sports Jerk on Sep 28, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hurricane Ditka

I still don’t think Cervelli would have any trouble with this guy….

Facial LaFleur, total facial.

by Lord Duggan on Sep 28, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

we can't just only play backups

or people would be rusty. I think they should all be given a lot of rest, but some should play as well. At the very least, the full lineup needs to play at least one more time in the last series before the playoffs.

Does anyone know if Girardi’s keeping up Torre’s old tradition of letting a player manage the last game?

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mostly.

looks like

Gardner
Cabrera
Damon
Posada
Cano
Hinskie
Miranda
GOD
Pena

+1 In all honesty

we really might.

Facial LaFleur, total facial.

by Lord Duggan on Sep 28, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if we're within one in the ninth

with runners on, would Girardi bother to pinch hit A-Rod or Tex, or Jeter, or just leave it?

by nyyrocks29 on Sep 28, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jeter, Swisher, Texeira, A-Rod, and Matsui

now THOSE are some bats for Girardi to play with on the bench (no homo) in a close game

Depends

Were the 1927 Yanks ever in this position?

by Yankz09 on Sep 28, 2009 8:28 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I know it's really, really unlikely

But how cool would it be if the Sox missed the playoffs after not trying to win for like the past week.

That would be the best day ever!

Gaudin cruising thru 5

Get this guy a playoff roster spot.

by Scooby Snacks on Sep 28, 2009 10:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

+1

He’s done a great job since coming to NYY, and doesn’t seem intimidated at all. He’d be a great long reliever in ALDS.

by pinstriper on Sep 28, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great

failed hit and run followed by a homer. Could be 3-1 instead of 2-1. This could really cost us in the long run.

by GMan83201 on Sep 28, 2009 10:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No big deal in a meaningless game

Girardi just got aggressive to get a rally going. Still got the go-ahead run.

by Scooby Snacks on Sep 28, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty impressive that Pena kept his concentration

after the failed hit and run… that could have played with his head.

Never saw that “silent treatment” think in the dugout before! Watched on YES… it was hilarious!

by pinstriper on Sep 28, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hahaha...

Dugout gave Pena the silent treatment for his first big league homer.

You know

This is actually a damn good game we’re watching here, from a pure baseball sense

by GMan83201 on Sep 28, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yea I'm enjoying it

I’m actually looking forward to watching these next few games. The “B-Listers” are all vying for a playoff roster spot and potential contract re-up with the team next year.

by Scooby Snacks on Sep 28, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

gaudin is dealing

he may be putting himself on the postseason roster

by GMan83201 on Sep 28, 2009 10:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Right

Because I’m the only one who criticizes his general inability to hit with RISP

by GMan83201 on Sep 28, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

I just said to my parents:

Watch, he’ll either hit a grand slam or hit into a triple play, but I think it’s a grand slam.

Then he hits a grand slam. Boo-yah!

by phonty on Sep 28, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is like some kind of movie

Phenom kid with one big struggle (RISP) just goes out and destroys it in the clutch. If only this was to clinch……

WHAT?!

A GS for Mr. I can’t hit with RISP?! Lol

by Yankz09 on Sep 28, 2009 11:08 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I really think this lineup

With our starting pitching could be a .500 team.

by GMan83201 on Sep 28, 2009 11:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Furthermore

If Grienke had this lineup he’d have 20 wins

by GMan83201 on Sep 28, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow Cano RISP GS.....speechless

how bout some for the post season too?

This has to be embarrassing to the Royals

Losing to the “B” team in a blowout.

by YankeesJets on Sep 28, 2009 11:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So the age old question

are the Yankees bench players still better than the Royals has been answered with a resounding “yes.”

Banish KC to AAA until they can come up with something respectable. My apologies to Zach Greinke, who by all accounts should get the Cy Young.

Facial LaFleur, total facial.

Contract KC and hold a player auction

A winning bidder will lose their first-round draft pick to them next year. Same for the Nats. And maybe the Pirates.

by Scooby Snacks on Sep 28, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WTF?

Why is Pena the player of the game? Cano hit a grand-slam for crissake!

"Son, Nobody is half as good as Mickey Mantle"

by ntrokel on Sep 28, 2009 11:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

But Cano's was icing

Pena had 2 big hits when it mattered more. I would’ve voted for Gaudin.
