Yanks on 9: Unrelenting in 10-2 win, score 7 in final inning

An IM I received at 10:28 tonight:

"We are so awesome. Its almost like girardi wanted to give this game up or was willing to but we are just too good."

For the first three quarters of the game, it was what I had feared: the Yankees, all but guaranteed to steamroll the Orioles, were in dead heat with this cellar dweller, locked in a 1-1 tie. Trouble from the bottom. Always the most insidious of threats.

But I had nothing to worry about it, after all. The Yankees acted like Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom, when he's under the Mola Ram spell...and then the 9th inning rolled around and a fire is lit under them to jolt them into consciousness--"Oh my God. We're in CAMDEN. Wait, is that a 3 or an 8? 3? We've only scored three runs in 6 innings? Wow. This is awkward."

And then...17 hits in the game, 7 runs in the 9th. Juxtaposed to CC's 9K, 1-run game. When you're in the position of wondering what's more impressive--your pitcher or your offense--it means life is good. It means you're a Yankee fan.

Star-divide

Other game notes:

  • Alex Rodriguez's 3-for-5 night delivered 4 invaluable RBIs. I really think the DSM-IV is going to have to list "Calling ARod a choker" among their symptoms for delusional mania and clinical insanity. Because while his BA is "only" .274, a significant number of his hits have been in critical spots. Today, those spots included two 2-run singles that broke open the 1-1 tie and then later put the Yanks ahead 5-2. Yeah, he's totally useless. Zero added value.

  • As my buddy pointed out in his IM, GIrardi seemed to be back to his old tricks of bobbing for bullpens--a game he created that involves clumsily grasping at relievers completely indiscriminatingly. In a 3-1 game, we're treated to the exciting-game-generating stylings of one Brian Bruney.

  • If "holds" is a stat, which I think is ridiculous, then there should be a stat for the opposite. Because if Bruney's going to continue to make us sweat with his every appearance, then his line score should suffer with an inflated "Unheld" stat. He "holds" leads like a guy spoons a chick: he knows he should be doing it and the hold makes her happy, but yet he does it as tentatively and noncommitally as possible to give him the option of slipping away.

  • ARod got his 2500th hit. It still counts in my book. I believe at least half the league's on steroids. But half the league doesn't hit the way he does. I mean, it's like Ortiz said of Bonds: "To hit the ball, the guy makes it look easy, but it ain't. I don't know how you can have that swing, consistently. I don't know how steroids can do that," Interesting perspective, Papi.

  • 6 BB for the Yankees. Patience is a virtue, indeed.

  • They left 11 runners on. And still scored 10. It's like thinking about the fact we still are leading the division, despite losing the first 8 games to the Red Sox.

  • 11 also is the number of game the Yankee have lost since the All-Star Break. 11. Out of 45. .755 winning percentage.

  • 7.5 is also the number of games we're up on Boston.

  • I get protecting Phil Hughes. Not to open up the Joba cesspool of debate, but no one was worried about him going from pitching 25 innings to 100+. ("Because he's a starter!") You know who else was a starter? Hughes. There's no need to blow his arm out, but sweet Christ, he's not made of porcelain. I know I'd have liked to see his filth a little earlier. And by filth, I mean his penchant for striking out the side.

  • When you think about it, Girardi's task of selecting a pitcher is comparatively easy when you consider that some poor guy in the YES department has the charge of selecting only one player of the game.

It's like Joe Esposito cantillates in the final scene of the Karate Kid:

You're the best around.

your deragatory statement saying that guys don’t like to spoon and aren’t very good at it to be very hurtful
im going to go cry now

I dont know, maybe they do

But from hearing how my buddies talk about it, it doesn’t sound like they’re big fans.

Spooning

Sorry to get off the Yankee talk but in terms of spooning, it’s only good if you are spooning with someone you like or, dare I say, love. I, being 37, have learned that. OMG, I’m giving spooning advice!!

by Mondoas on Sep 3, 2009 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah I'm not a big fan

i have a hard enough time as it is getting a good night’s sleep. I don’t need a space-eater to add to that challenge.

PLEASE EXPLAIN THAT TO MY GIRLFRIEND!

she is a sleep hugger , where as i cant fall asleep if there is touching or pressure of any kind … like socks … blah … totally awful sleep.

I KNOW!

It’s fine for a few minutes, but then it’s like when you’re on a plane and the friendly guy next to you starts chatting and it’s ok for a little, but then I want to be like, Ok, I’m done with this, I’m going back to reading my magazine.

I just start talking about my herpes

That usually ends the conversation quickly. Sure it will get you a few sideways glances, but that’s the price you pay for a smooth, quiet plane ride.

good game

Seriously, it’s fun to watch the Yankees this year, especially with their late game heroics, always keep me interested. And A-Rod coming through for us like the guy we need. I like that he’s not trying to hit home runs and just make contact.

Small correction, in the first bullet, A-Rod’s second 2-run single put us up 5-2 (insurance runs). We were never down after we got the 3-1 after his first 2-run hit.

This is my first post (long time reader, new to sharing my thoughts here). Love the commentary and camaraderie among the fans here! :)

The ironic thing is

the one time I actually would have been OK with a pitcher swap would have been the bottom of the ninth, after Phil had sat so long, and the Yankees had such a big lead. That would have been a good time to show us Ramirez, Dunn, whoever (Cervelli!).

But, it was a save situation (10-2 saves, gotta love ‘em), so maybe that was a factor. I don’t know.

ARod

I honestly believe in order for people to FINALLY move on regarding A-Rod and steroids we shouldn’t even talk about it. For some reason people want to be negative about anything and everything the guy does. He’s been playing well despite the hip issues and you know what? Congrats to him on reaching 2,500 hits! He has worked hard for them and I hope he gets 2,500 more!!

by Mondoas on Sep 3, 2009 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

indeed

Joe is hard to figure. Like the A-ROd delusionals – he gets credit in my personal notebook for speaking out against steroids – not through his Hollywood/Madonna handlers, but on his own.

But, with respect to Alex, it’s his new ’tude; humbler, more grounded, not having to play the role of A-Rod/the movie, all that nonsense.

I think he didnt bring in hughes earlier cause mariano was down today and hughes was closing …. though bruney was a awful choice … but once again we have to save our bullpen for the jays who will undoubtedly be stupid trouble for us …
but whatever, a win is a win is a win and all that …. no im going to go excercise some schadenfreude and go read the comments in the over the monster gameday thread and watch them deflate … a perfect way to deflate into a sleepy coma.

been a long time reader, but a first time poster. i always enjoy reading CYC’s posts on here, keep it up. unfortunately i don’t get to see many Yankee games where i’m at, it’s usually the Cardinals/Cubs/Reds.

i know it was a save situation tonight, but i don’t know about using Hughes with an 8 run lead in the bottom of the ninth. altho i’m not the manager and it’s easy to be a monday morning quarterback.

by JumpinJackFlash on Sep 3, 2009 1:55 AM EDT reply actions

I have no problem with bringing Bruney in for teh 8th.

Getting him right ,and having him be able to come out of the bullpen and kill it would give us another weapon outta the pen come playoff time. Unfortunately Brian seems to be pitching himself out of contention for a roster spot.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on Sep 3, 2009 6:46 AM EDT reply actions

Bullpen

If you noticed, Rivera was not available last night (he apparently has a groin injury — ugh!!). That’s why Bruney came in and Hughes was held to close. Get all the information before ripping the bullpen use.

by Ed Valentine on Sep 3, 2009 7:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Did I miss something in Casanova's post?

I think he was just pointing out that a good Bruney would be, well, good. But, the way he’s pitching, he may not make the postseason roster.

by Rusty23 on Sep 3, 2009 8:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah...

…because it would have been impossible for Hughes to pitch two innings, right?

by New York Sports Jerk on Sep 3, 2009 8:08 AM EDT up reply actions

If Mo is really hurt

No need to over-use Phil in a game against the friggin’ Orioles

by waw on Sep 3, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow...

Indiana Jones, spooning and the end of the Karate Kid reference in one PSG?

Back to the game…This is a game that showed why A-Rod is ACTUALLY the team’s MVP. Tex gets the pub, Jete gets the love from the fans…but A-Rod is actually the team’s MVP.

We saw what they were with and without A-Rod……is it even close? I don’t care what his number are either. Just by being there, he’s the MVP of this team.

During the game last night

I was in the basement hand sanding the drawer fronts on the new piece of furniture I’m making to set the big screen TV on. When Joe brought in Bruney me not knowing at the time that Hughes was being held for use as the closer I managed to get quite a bit of effort into sanding whilst cussing Girardi as 5 kinds of an idiot! But as the Bard said-All’s well that ends well. Only other problem with working during the game is that I am stuck listening to the game on radio. I swear two more innings of listening to Waldman and my brain would be total mush. Tonight I get to listen while breathing paint fumes, I should be ready for Bellvue by end of the weekend.

spooning is overatted!

Hey, if you want to snuggle while watching the yanks pound yet another team, I’m all for it. You want to hold hands while watching another chick flick that features Matthew mcconahey shirtless and making me feel like shit cause I skipped my morning workout, cool. But when its time to sleep, I need my space. I have a king sized bed so that it takes no less than two rolls to reach you. Another great post cyc, another great win yanks, and another sweep! Play on playas
