Magic number is 12, or 6 or 13.
The Yankee Magic Number vs Boston is 12. But there are 2 other important things to clinch.
First, with 17 games left, we need to clinch a playoff berth. Texas has 80 wins with 19 games left. They could win 99 by winning out (right). The Yanks have won 93, so magic number to clinch a playoff birth is 6. We could clinch our playoff berth as early as this weekend.
After we clinch playoffs, and win the east we need to have the best record. Magic number for best record v Angles is 13. (Maybe 12, depending on the tie breaker, I was lazy and didn't check it).
Notice that poor Boston is only 1 1/2 back of LAA for second best AL record (One in the loss column.
We are on a pace to win 104. winning 105 would just about clinch it all.
Go Yanks, keep on rolling.

it's a beautiful thing...
The Yanks just need to keep on doing what they’re doing, and keep it going in the postseason.
The magic number is 11
That’s playoff wins. Everything else is meaningless.
World Series or bust.

So when do they celebrate?
After they clinch a postseason spot, the division, or both? I’d say they would celebrate after clinching a postseason spot, so there could be champain spilling within a week. Although what I really would just LOVE to do is clinch against the Red Sox at home. A nice “rub it in there face because they weren’t as good as us” moment for the Yankees and their fans. But that would mean that Texas would go on a tear and we would slow on the West Coast trip. I’d say the most likely is against the Angels, but I’d just love to do it at home against the Blow Sux.
Sox are playing well! this isn't over
If I's known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself. Casey
Postseason spot is pretty much locked up
magic number is 4 now I think. Don’t worry. As long as we don’t get swept by the Sox at home there really won’t be a problem. This team has NEVER blown a 6.5 game lead. Why would they blow it with 2 weeks left? We’re not the Mets!
I agree that we need to keep playing well and the race isn’t over, but I’m not worried about the Red Sox.
