True
Joba’s slider that year was untouchable though. I just think Hughes doesn’t have the Joba Rules making him more valuable, and our team is better as a hole. I expect Hughes to play a huge role in the playoffs. (remember the 07 playoffs, lets just say when hughes came in for the rocket that day I became a huge Hughes fan!)
no way
This team makes the playoffs without hughes in the pen instead he is in the rotation helping.Anybody remember just how bad that bullpen was?Joba saved the season that yr.The bullpen cost the yanks at least 15 games until joba was called up.This pen is way better and would get by better then that one did.Team itself will end up with comparable runs scored BA OBP maybe not homeruns but thats the park early on.

Broken Record
I feel like a broken record but it’s so incredibly frustrating to watch Phil Hughes pitch thirds of innings out of the pen while Sergio Mitre disgraces the team as a starter. Put Hughes in the rotation, put Gaudin in long relief, give Robertson and Melancon more important innings and send Mitre back under whatever rock he crawled out from.

Why do you want to fix something that ain't broken?
Gee 5.5 games up and thats not enough? Lets send Hughs down to Scranton for 2-3 weeks so he can get to start for all of 4 starts?

It seems to me that the Yankees should continue
to do that which has gotten them to the best record in baseball and a 5 1/2 game lead in the AL East. Anythinh else would be, dare I say, stupid.

I’d rather not vote on this one……..This is a very tight race,in 07 I don’t quite recall how close it was on this date………..Phil could be considered more of a lifesaver because he was asked to do something he NEVER considered. Joba was a starter coming up, but I think it was understood that he would be coming outta the pen for a lil bit from jumpstreet until he eased himself in.

Joba i feel was more dominant
but in terms of value, Hughes has pitched more innings and close to all of them have been quality outings so ill say Hughes
Hughes
I think that Hughes gets my vote because if you look at it every time he has come into the game in situations that are close he has always kept other teams off the scoreboard and given a chance for the Yankees to either pull ahead or keep their lead. Yes Joba was in the bullpen in 07 and did absolutely phenomenal, but Hughes is doing good this year and this year is what counts because they are in a position to keep their control of the lead in the east and even give them what they need in the postseason to win the world series.

Mariano can’t pitch forever. Hughes is pitching like Mariano did setting up for Wettland. Just something to think about.
Phil Hughes
I don’t believe that we will know who is more valuable until the entire season is over, including the playoffs. How valuable was Joba if the ultimate goal is to win a championship and we didn’t get out of the first round? Don’t blame the bugs, that was just one moment, not THE deciding moment. Will we win it all this year? Anything less means that we didn’t perform to the level we all expect. All, not just Phil or Joba.
That being said, Phil Hughes has been the stabilizing force, that missing piece, out of the bullpen. He has been invaluable. Why take him out of his current role? He seems to be enjoying his role, and seems to like being the man (finally) handing the ball cleanly over to Mo. Let the season play out, then decide.
I heard
I heard that because of jobas innings limit. (which is rediculous) that he only has a few starts left anyway, so we most likely see hughes back in the rotation regardless. Joba was rediculous out of the bullpen.
joba to bullpen
keep hughes in bullpen to take over for mariano in a few years and leave joba as a starter. but in the playoffs this year the yanks need joba in the bullpen and pettite as the third starter along with aj and cc. with joba hughes rivera in the bullpen in the playoffs if the starter makes it to the 7th inning with the lead its almost a guaranteed win
Ive heard...
that Phil actually likes relieving. He has the tools to be a starter but I for one would like to see him stay in the pen & maybe become Mo’s successor
