Dare to Dispute: Melky
True or False:
This season Melky Cabrera has had the best season of any number nine hitter in all of baseball in the last 5 years.

Wrong comparison?
I don’t see comparing number 9 hitters in MLB and saying Melk is best. He is hitting in the 9 hole only because of the other 8 better hitters in this lineup. A better comparison should be by position. Is he the best hitting CF? I put him in the top 5-7, but no…not best.
Melk’s had some great highlight moments this year, and lordy knows, I hope he keeps it up. But I am old school and the antics with Cano that he still shows on the field and in the dugout really bug me. I thought he would learn to be a pro after being sent down last year, and with a little competition from Brett. Still think he has more potential than he has shown, but a little more effort and focus is needed or that talent goes to waste.

He loosens up the clubhouse with those antics…something the yankees had fail to keep doing for quite sometime. Melky has really been significant this season for the yankees and without him I don’t think the Yankees would be playing 1st place baseball..

CF no problems
Melky’s been really good and add that to the .354 OBP and 20 steals that Brett Gardner’s managed to put up, CF has actually been more of a strength for the Yankees than a weakness like we all thought it would be.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees wind up doing with the position next year. Trade Melky? Trade Gardner? Trade Austin Jackson? Call up Jackson and use the Melky/Gardner platoon in left?

Please
Let’s not be cocky about our line up. It has struggled mightily at times. I agree that Melky is the best #9,…but how many times has he actually batted 9th. He hasn’t been the 9 guy for most of the season. I think you’re being a bit deceptive.
I hope this line up remains good enough to keep Melky at the bottom of the line up. If the only place for Melky is the 9 hole. it’s going to be a long summer for the AL east
I see things you don't see.
Hold on
Isn’t Jason Bartlett having a better year than Melky?

Have to say false on this because of.........Robbie Cano
First of all this year Melky has only batted in the 9 hole in 17 games. So i would hardly call him a classic “#9 hitter”
In 2006, when the Yankee lineup was known as “Murderer’s Row And Then Cano”, Cano spent almost the entire season batting 9th, and put up a line of .342/.365/.525.
With that said, I think that Melky has been great, exceeding all of our expectations, but I don’t think we can say that he’s the best #9 hitter in the past 5 years.
Yea....
just the fact that Cano batting #9 in 2006 and put up what he done did, there’s no way Melky is doing that.
Melk is my boy, but I kinda don’t understand the high praise the guy gets after the cycle the other day (then all of a sudden he’s Bernie Williams) and now he’s the best #9 hitter in the game based up his clutch 3-R HR? He’s not even the best #9 hitter on the Yankees in the past 5 years (Cano) nor is he the best #9 hitter THIS season (Bartlett).
Melky is very good. Him and Gardner form a very nice tandem in the CF hole, tho I really think Melky is getting more of a stranglehold on the position by the game (tho Gardner still should play a lot).
But 5-7 CF’s in the game? Carlos Beltran, Torii Hunter, Matt Kemp, Adam Jones, Curtis Granderson are all hands down better. I know Grady Sizemore is having a subpar season, but you’d be nuts to think Melky is better than him.
He’s more along the same as Franklin Gutierrez this season. Melk has been getting better as the season goes along, unlike his past few seasons. Id love to see him continue this, but lets not overrated him. He’s simply just a solid CF who Id love to spend a long part or all of his career in a Yankee uni.
Clutch
I dunno if it’s fair to compare but Melky has been pretty clutch this season. Everytime he comes to the plate i’m expecting him to do something crazy now. Gotta appreciate the work he’s putting in after what he did last season.

The Melk Man
Hey, you can’t forget that the guy is only 24 years old. He’s still learning to hit. Give him a year or two yet. He’s been having a great year. The best 9 hitter? I don’t know. He’s been clutch. That’s all you could ask for from your #9 hitter. His fielding is decent to good. And he makes some great plays. But you have to wonder what would have happened had Gardner stayed healthy? Would Melky have been this good with less playing time? Probably not. I could see a future of Jackson in center with Melky in Right and Gardner in Left because of his superior speed. But you know that would never happen. An expensive free agent whose real productive will come up and the Yanks will snap him up.
Giambi might make a good pinch hitter but who do you send down? You already have to make room when Gardner comes back. And the Yanks need all there Pitchers assuming Mitre swaps with Gaudin. Its a nice thought but I just dont see it.
