Can They Really Keep Joba in the Rotation?
I've been working on a post for a couple of days now, trying to outline how the Yankees could keep Joba in the rotation for the rest of the season and stay within his 150ish innings cap.
I'd given it up as impossible because it would require pulling him from the rotation and using a spot starter 3 or 4 times and involve letting Mitre (or whomever winds up fifth starter) pitch some critical games down the stretch.
Now comes word via the Sports Jerk, that Joba will finish the season in the rotation (I've searched for confirmation but not found it yet).
Is there a way to do it without abandoning the innings cap? Assume Joba gets 8 more starts, can you figure out a way for him to finish the season in the rotation?

Any way to host it on here? If not I can email it to Ed.

I didn’t mean that as doubting you; I’m just surprised none of the MSM has picked up on it yet.
There are ways to host audio, so go ahead and email it to me using the link at the bottom of the page. I’ll check with the big wigs to make sure we won’t be stepping on anybody’s copyrights.

Listen to the Cashman audio.
This interview, together with the move of his start back from Toronto to Boston makes me think we’d give him extra rest between starts. I think he’ll end up pitching more innings than we’d been led to expect.
Amoung other things he said, we could move one of these guys back to the rotation if that’s what is required. Refering to Ace and Hughes.
I think we’ll see Hughes start. I think you’ll see more of Melancon.
If I's known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself. Casey
Agreed. Innings is just a more digestible term.
Within pitches there should be attention to low stress and high stress. 100 pitches with poor command and runners on counts for more than 100 dominant pitches.

110 innings
so far, Id think its around 150 for the season and then whatever in the playoffs, cuz at most he’ll go 30 innings in the playoffs.
Joba did an excellent job of limiting his innings early on, tho he still had 100 pitches per outing.
He’ll still trot out there as a starter of course, and I think you’ll see him do what he’s doing this week, as in get his starts pushed back a bit.
No one else needs to be moved in or out of the rotation. Mitre might suck, but if he gives 5-6 IP and 4 runs each time out, that would be nice.
i laughed when i read this
Joba did an excellent job of limiting his innings early on.
Yeah the silly thing about the innings limit is that whether Joba goes 4 innings and throws 105 pitches or 7 innings and 105 pitches its still the same toll on his arm. Just because he wasn’t effective doesn’t mean he wasn’t worked hard.
Still he’ll probably get up to around 165 ip for the regular season. He’d likely be the game 4 starter in the playoffs so if we made it all the way to the WS he’d pitch another 20 innings tops. 180-185 is more than the Yankees were hoping for but still its not like its 220.

innings limit
based on the formula the yanks have been using recently they dont want to exceed 140 innings for the year with Joba. The formula is not to go more than 40 innings over the previous season’s innings total. Last year he threw 100.1 innings. That said, unless there is a waiver move bringing in another starter there is no way you can justify pulling Joba out of the rotation right now, he’s throwing better than EVERYONE. The only possibility I can see is swapping Joba and Hughes. We know Joba is capable of being better than Hughes right now now as the setup guy which is scary seeing how lights-out Hughes has been. This also makes sense because Hughes will need to increase his innings total so he can have the higher innings limit for next season based on the same formula.
These innings limits are annoying but I’d rather be safe with their young arms and have them for a lengthy career than blow their arms out before they reach 26. Yes it could lead to a ring but at the same time, grooming them properly could bring another Yankee dynasty
limits
Let’s stop treating Joba like a piece of fine china. They failed to land a pitcher at the deadline and don’t appear as though they will before the next deadline. If you pull the best starter we have right now for this ridiculous innings limit and miss the playoffs, heads need to roll. Watch his pitch limit per game like any other pitcher but for God’s sake, forget about the innings limit.
