Bobby Abreu

Man the Angels got a deal with this guy do you wish we would have worked a similar deal out with him? I mean it would have been nice to have another bat to DH with on nights A-Rod needs his beauty sleep. Sorry for that cheap shot A-Rod.  But then part of me says I am glad he is gone and the only reason he is doing so well is because he does not have that pressure of playing in New York. I mean really some players just can't peform that well with the Yankees. They are not like Derek Jeter.  Tell me what you think I am intrested in knowing. I mean Abreu played well when he was with the Philles and when the Yankees were winning he did ok but it seemed like when we needed him the most forget about it! But hey we can say the same thing for some other Yankees as well.

he had a $16 million option with the Yankees. That’s how he would have stayed.

or arbitration...

…which would have netted him that or more probably. Right on, Bradshaw.

If Cash could have signed him up front for one year and $5M, yes he’d still be a Yankee. But he waited for his big pay day, which never came, and didn’t sign until February- days before Spring Training started- at which point the Yankees had moved on and had a roster full of OF’s.

I liked Bobby, but I don’t miss him. Neither do the Yankees.

He wanted to be back

He’d have signed with us for the same deal.

We likes Xavier Nady better. Nuf said.

No need

Bobby is a declining player. we have a decent player in swish for less money. I am not a fan of strining players along on one year contracts (ahem andy pettite ahem) either sign the player or dont.

You can have him

His D sucked.. and he seemed like he turned it off and on when he wanted to..

hmm..

When I first heard that we got abreu, I was like cool, let’s see what he can do cause I knew he did well in philly. A BIG disappointment, didn’t do well and just sucked it up. Ever see an ad for a movie and it looks really awesome then you go see it at the theatre or get it as soon as it comes on dvd then when it’s over your ticked at urself for wasting the money? That’s abreu straight up, swisher’s alright, younger too and hopefully last longer.

Yanks rock!!!

is just false

Bobby was a disappointment? Are you nuts? WHat you just said is NOT Abreu straight up, maybe not even Giambi straight up cuz G was pretty damn good, he wasn’t MVP A’s good tho.

Bobby was great as a Yank. He wasn’t as good a defender as I thought and his HR went down, but that was after that HR derby anyway.

$16 mill for this season would not have worked, but for $7-8 mill this season all the RBI and clutchness that was Bobby, + more than likely some boosted HR totals, he would have been excellent AGAIN with teh Yanks.

Letting Abreu walk was CLEARLY the right decision

The Yankees did not hold an option for Bobby Abreu in 2009. They could have offered him arbitration, however, the rules of the system won’t allow a player to take more than a 20% pay cut. Abreu made $16 million in 2008, so he couldn’t have made less than $12.8 million this year, and realistically, he wasn’t coming off a bad season, so he probably would have made $16-$18 million in arbitration. The market for good-hitting, poor-fielding corner outfielders had already tanked ahead of the Dec. 2 arbitration deadline, so it was pretty clear that Abreu’s best option would have been arbitration.

On November 13th, the Yankees traded for Nick Swisher, who has a similar skill set to Abreu, but who was guaranteed $21 million over the next three years.
Swisher hits for a lower average and doesn’t steal bases, but he’s six years younger, hits for more power, and provides substantially better defense in right field.

Overall, Swisher has been worth 3.8 Wins Above Replacement this year while Abreu has only been 3.2 WARP, and the Yankees have him under control for three more years (two guaranteed plus a team option for 2012).

So, yeah, in a vacuum, keeping Abreu would not have been a horrible decision, but trying to get a younger, better player, who’s under team control for far longer, was a much better decision.

Only one player

in the last decade I would’ve like to see stay a Yankee, Alfonso Soriano
If the Yanks could have just found another way to get Alex.

DH??? (Cue John McEnroe)--

You can not be serious!!

I mean it would have been nice to have another bat to DH with on nights A-Rod needs his beauty sleep.

The Yankees have more than enough guys to plug into the DH role. In fact there’s a guy named Hideki Matsui who can only DH. Not mention the half nights off for guys like Posada, Jeter, Damon, Tex… I’m not sure how this even crossed your mind as an argument for Abreu.

abreu! hum!

well he was good, maybe very good but not for $16,000,000 millions dollares at year,
that’s teixeira tipe money; and remember he didn’t have a choice no other team was talking to him only the angels.

Guy hit 300 with 100 +RBI consistantly, scared of the wall but decent arm,BA in the playoffs is acceptable.16 million was way to much but he did alot of good things when with the yanks.
