Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Open thread on an off-night

Feel free to discuss anything you wish with no game tonight.

There's the Sox-Sox matchup, the Mets finding new and nearly unprecedented ways to lose, will Boston fans be rooting for the Yanks in the next series(?), and there's always the Joba Rules...

PS: First-round centerfielder Slade Heathcott made his pro debut with a 1-3. J.R. Muprhy continues to rake in the early going (2-4 today), bringing his four-game line to .400/.471/.467.

Halladay vs. Mo

I would not agree with Halladay winning the Cy Young Award either this year. Sabathia, Verlander, and Beckett all have more wins. Sabathia and Beckett have lower WHIPs, Verlander has more Ks. In the end, however, none of those names should be on the Cy Young. It should instead go to Rivera who has a lower ERA than all of them, more saves than anyone else this year, a microscopic WHIP of .92, 59 Ks vs. only 9 BBs, and opponents are batting less than .240 against him. He has been the single most untouchable pitcher in the American League this year and at the closing stage of more than a decade of dominance, he deserves to hold the Cy Young up for once.

Cordially,

New Hampshire Bob

Closers never win the Cy Young

Which is why it would be so fitting for Mo to break that stereotype

yikes

I watched the first half of the Sox-Sox game at a bar on the LES. I left with the good (for today) Sox up 4-1 and thought that Contreras might finally have figured out how to pitch to Boston. Just checked the score – 9-7 Bad Sox? Do they ever play a low-scoring game? Will Contreras ever be Mitre-like against them?

i was just on mlb.com

And they included in their recap of the sox/sux game a comment about how the red sux increased their wild card lead and gained a half game on the yanks. Ok, just cause you won and team that is leading you by 7.5 doesn’t play today doesn’t mean you gained a half game! It just shows you the love affair the media has with the blow sux. Oh well, if they hate us, were doing something right. Also, believe it or not skip (spineless)bayless actually said jeter should be MVP right now. Was kind of shocked that sox loving douche could muster up a nice word for a Yankee. And lastly, we were too nice to that chiefs/sox fan today. Stupid troll, if he comes back let’s make him cry

Half game

No it does mean they gained a half game on us. Its not the media loving the soxs. It’s baseball buddy

y does ESPN love the redsux?

it seems like everything they do revolves around the sox. on a comercial about a game coming up the backround is the green monster and then on a conversation i heard on baseball tonight they were talkin about how the season wasnt over because the yankees STILL have to play the red sox and then tampa bay eventually. this was before the 2 out of 3 in boston. it annoys me to the point where i just turn it off

by GUARPO on Aug 25, 2009 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

theres lots of yankee love too

but if there is a bias on ESPN for the red sox, its because the headquarters are in Connecticut.

by revived0103 on Aug 25, 2009 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Id say its more Yankee attention

and that attention is more like hate.

I read a few posts on OTM and you guys are thinking the opposite of what we think in these Yank vs. Pissant games.

Its kinda funny cuz I really don’t notice any Yankee homerism from ESPN or Fox, just blatant hate for the Yanks and all mancrush for the Pissants.

Watching Tigers-Angels last night

and Joe Morgan could not shut up about how well the Red Sox were playing right now. He specifically pointed out how well they’ve been scoring, including over the weekend. I guess scoring 29 runs is so great that we should forget that they also gave up 29 runs and lost 2/3 at home? And all this while the pathetic White Sox were giving them all they could handle?

by waw on Aug 25, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL!

I REALLY can’t stand the ESPN broadcasts anymore.

I turned that game on at the exact time they were putting up a stat of I belive the players who were quickest to a certain amount of HR (cuz they were praising Miguel Cabrera, all good with that).

Then Morgan reads down his checklist and forgot that he for got to mention Ken Griffey Jr., so he say “I though Ken Griffey Jr.” would be on that list.

So annoying.

mo for cy young ? … you know … thats not a ridiculous idea … i mean what starter would ou give it too? not beckett, halladay i hope is out, cc isnt there and grienke jas been awful, so i his revent awfulness has kept his era tight …. but then coms mo or hughes …. hmmm a lot to consider …

also teixeira was funny and calm and said everything right on letterman, and he hit two solid homers on 53rd street … awesome.

Here's the thing about Mo

If you want to put him in contention, then you also have to consider Joe Nathan. Other than saves (32 vs 36), BBs (13 vs 9) & blown saves (1 vs. 4), he bests Mo in almost every category. He’s got a lower ERA (1.63 vs 1.87), WHIP (0.87 vs. 0.92), BA (.170 vs .202), less HRs (3 vs. 6) more Ks (65 vs. 59) in less innings (49.2 vs. 53). He’s given up less hits (30 vs. 40) & ER (9 vs. 11) than Mo. He’s also playing for a team that isn’t winning as much & doesn’t have as many save chances. I’d think you’d have to consider Nathan as well. I think that Mo does deserve it this year b/c he is dominant, but going on #s alone, Nathan is better.

by BriGuy27 on Aug 25, 2009 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

You are double-counting some numbers

If his ERA is lower, and his innings are lower, then of course he’s given up fewer runs. Same with BA and hits allowed. I agree that the lower ERA and WHIP is an advantage for Nathan, who really has been incredible this year. But I’d say 36 saves in 37 chances vs. 32 saves in 36 chances is a much more telling statistic for a closer. It’s all about converting on the chances you are given. That is three more wins lost (or at least, jeopardized) for Nathan. Since we’re talking about that strange and magical creature known as the “Closer”, you have to consider which are the numbers that should weigh the most, and not just treat them all as equally important.

Just my $.02. Probably irrelevant, as the Cy will almost certainly go to Halladay or Greinke, no matter what we think…

by waw on Aug 25, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

True

I also think Mo is the best candidate, but Joe Nathan’s put together a lights-out season as well.

Jeter for MVP?

I know that Mauer is the odds-on fave to win the AL MVP. But if Pedroia can win an MVP, why not Jeter?

by 2009Champs on Aug 25, 2009 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

Because Keebler was not competing with a monster like Mauer

I don’t recall that anyone else last year blew away the field like Mauer is doing this year.

by waw on Aug 25, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

You're Def right

But still…Youkilis (who I hate more than Pedroia, but is better) had an OPS of .959. Do they give bonus points to Pedroia because he is miniature, like a Tiny Tim bonus?

You are right though, Mauer is sick this year and the guy catches.
