Jim Rice = D*ckhead

Jim Rice doesn't think today's major leaguers are good role models, as he told the players at the Little League World Series. For the most part, sure, fair assessment. But then what he said was this:

"You see a Manny Ramirez, you see an A-Rod [Alex Rodriguez], you see [Derek] Jeter ... Guys that I played against and with, these guys you're talking about cannot compare," Rice said to Little Leaguers gathered in the cafeteria.

***

"We didn't have the baggy uniforms. We didn't have the dreadlocks," Rice said. "It was a clean game, and now they're setting a bad example for the young guys."

Asked later at a news conference to list current players worthy of the Hall of Fame, Rice suggested Seattle Mariner outfielders Ichiro Suzuki and Ken Griffey Jr., and Chicago White Sox slugger Jim Thome.

He said he believes current Hall of Famers who did not cheat don't want players who took performance-enhancing drugs to join them in the Hall.

Flexing the muscles in his right arm, Rice said, "That's all the steroids you need . . . It's called God-given talent."

So where the hell does Jeter come up in all this? PED's? Check for A-Rod and Manny. Baggy uniforms and dreads? Check for Manny. So tell me Jim, how is Derek Jeter setting a poor example for kids? Why are Ichiro, Junior, and Thome on your pedestal?? Perhaps because they are not Yankees? I mean they've played in the same era as DJ, aren't they subject to the same groundless suspicions? I just don't get it. All I know is I would give plenty to make sure my kid grows up to be Derek Jeter.

We always knew Jim Rice was an asshole, but even this took me by surprise.

jeter?

before i even finished the article, in fact the first line of his statements, i was a little sceptacle. JETER? what is he talking about. He is the epitome of a role model. Great player, clean, kind, playa. what more can you ask.

Rice A Roni

What a jackass…LOL @ flexing his shriveled up, tired ass “I made it on the last year of eligibility HOF ballot” arm.

I do think he deserved his induction….But Mr. Rice, you are clearly an asshole. I know you commentate on NESN but my goodness!

How the flying fuck does Jeter relate to Manny or ARod?

by ReggieARodJeter on Aug 21, 2009 3:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

and WTF is wrong with dreads? is this not America?

People wore mullets, afros, 10 inch staches and all in his era. I’m taking your brotha card Jim.
Did you not have an afro turned into a jheri curl from the late 70s into the 80s? WTF?

So lemme get this str8?——Activator dripping onto your jersey’s number on the back was a Golden Era style of player? What a joke of a human being.

And one more thing

You look at a player for his contributions to the game, not his style of uniform asswipe.

by ReggieARodJeter on Aug 21, 2009 3:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yea...

cuz the guys on the Red Sox are all roll models right Jim?

Jeter? Even Ichiro? How Ichiro?

Jim Rice is a sad piece of trash who deserves his Hall plaque taken away if he thinks Ichiro and Jeter are not role models.

is Youkilis a role model?

why didn’t he mention Bonds?

of all the guys out there, Jeter? I mean THE Derek Jeter is a bad role model for kids?!!!

if Rice’s problems are PEDs, baggy uniforms and dreadlocks, there’s just one guy who fits all that: Manny. DJ doesn’t have ANY of that. he runs hard every time, doesn’t cheat on his wife, is a great teammate from all accounts, never gets into fights, anything but a show boat.

has Rice watched a baseball game since 1986?

This guy is an idiot

How Can you even put Dj in the same category with Manny and AroD?

by Yankz09 on Aug 21, 2009 4:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I would not put AROD

in the same category as Manny….yes Arod confessed he took PEDs but at least he came out and flat out said it. FUCK Manny and His big fat Big Mami ( BIG PAPI) that could not confess he took PEDs. I could care less about whether Arod cheated on his wife or not, Jeter is a womanizer himself the only difference he is not stupid to marry one. Third I doubt that Arod just like Jeter will walk into his manager office and ask for a day off.

He sounds senile

without all the recent PED scandals his dementia addled ass would never be in the HOF.

And by the by, is the steroid era so much worse than the cocaine era that Rice was a part of?

Rice was wrong to mention any player

by name in a negative way. Slander is classless, doesn’t matter who he named. Picking out Jeter is obviously unfounded and anything less than an apology and retraction to those same kids makes him less than a man. If he wanted to name players he should have mentioned those he thought were good examples but, apparently, he isn’t too bright.

by Peter Lacock on Aug 21, 2009 6:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed with that

He shouldn’t mention any player. But seriously. JETER? Are you kidding me? Jeter, to me, is the face of good, hard played, clean baseball. He’s always been that to me. And Jim Rice is an absolute IDIOT to mention his name.

I understand him saying that A-Rod and Manny aren’t good role models, but seriously, HE is not being a good role model by trash talking current players. Me, I don’t want kids following the paths A-Rod and Manny took either. Especially Manny. Manny represents everything that is WRONG for baseball. He never hustles. Seems like he never tries. Cheats the game and pretty much shows more remorse about it. I wouldn’t want a kid to follow A-Rods path either but seriously, at least A-Rod owned up to his mistake and showed remorse. And A-Rod at least tries on the baseball field. But Rice is wrong to mention anyone in a negative way. And I agree with you. It’s classless.

Jim Rice

As a member of Red Sox nation, I gotta comment on the Yankee fans’ reaction to this. I think the name-calling is goes way beyond the pale. And bashing his election to the HOF shows a lack of good sportsmanship. I’d be happy to see Mattingly in the HOF, but then …

Just remember that the Bronxsters are the best team money can buy … and who has won more World Series in the 21st century ;)

by 02048 in 74037 on Aug 22, 2009 6:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Uh... What?

Boston has the 2nd highest payroll in baseball. They gave 50 million to DiceK just to have the rights to sign him. Who won more WS in the 90’s? In 2010, your comment is irrelevent and it goes back to, “Who won more WS as a franchise??” Don’t cry. There is no better going on in Red Sox nation about people agreeing with him about the Jeter comment so it’s all equal as far as I am concerned.

Rice

has every right to mention guys like A-Rod and Manny for the fact they were in the report of testing + for PED’s. That’s fine with me.

Its when he accused Jeter and also guys like Thome and Ichiro that gets me fumed.

All 3 of these guys are more deserving HOFers than Rice. Thome and Ichiro aren’t definite first balloters, but depending on how their career #’s finish up, they might be.

What do you want us to do? How can any self respecting baseball fan agree with what Rice has to say? He has no proof on Jeter. The only proof is the complete opposite of what he says.

Jeter played most of last season with more than likely what was a broken hand…but you never heard anything on it.

If anything, Jeter is the type of player than would be a standout in any era. Rice is just JEALOUS cuz Jeter has 4 WS championships (compared to Rice’s ZERO), is a first ballot HOFer (who may eventually break Pete Rose’ hit record—which may happen this year the way he’s going….) and just so happen to get a contract in an era where $190 million was market value.

Rice has no right to bash a future fellow HOFer, and every right to be ripped to shreads. If Red Sox fans had any decency, they’d wonder WTF is wrong with Rice to mention Jeter.

When Jeter is a HOFer and he turns around and says Pedroia is piece of crap, what would you say(Jeter would never do that BTW).

Rice is an idiot and so are you for agreeing with him.

The 2007 Red Sox broke the record for highest payroll on a World Series winner set by the 2004 Red Sox.

please

your golden boy Theo can throw out as much money as he chooses.

that was a pretty smart decision on his part to hold onto that extra $3 million in the Teixiera sweepstakes. there’s no doubt in my mind that if you take Tex away from the Yankees and put him with the Sox this year, Boston is the one with the 7 1/2 game lead right now.

if you ask me, low-balling Tex and letting him walk to the Yankees was 100X worse than even the Carl Pavano signing. stupid, stupid move.

Well, today he just said that he didn't accuse Jeter OR A-Rod of anything.

Here’s the article. He definitely accused Manny, but according to him, he said nothing bad about Jeter or A-Rod.

RubiCant

Ill be gentle with the name calling but at the least Rice is misguided.. As far as his finger pointing ..he didnt have such a pristine history himself as he was regarded as a surly person in the Boston media in the 70’s … As far as role models though why doesnt he point out little gritty Dustin Pedroia and his convicted pedophile brother … Thats a great role model.. Your time is coming Red Sox colony .. Cant wait till their is an investigation into the bullshit Mitchell/Report led my Board of Director of the Sux Sen George Mitchell.. ( on our dime by the way) as far history goes 04 and 07 withstanding is a little on the short side when it comes to championships and btw cant wait till St Curt gets named on the Steroid list.. Enjoy your team getting put to sleep this weekend..

Jim Rice

is part of the reason why Cooperstown has become the Hall-of-Very-Good.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Aug 22, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hall of Conformity

With the ridiculous focus on a few key numbers like 500 homers, 3000 hits, 300 wins… it seems to me the HoF has become more like the Hall of More Of The Same. How many players have hung on long past their prime in order to reach one of those milestone numbers that “guarantee” their ticket to Cooperstown? Or consider this: if Jeter retires today, short of 3000 hits, is he any less worthy of the HoF? Reaching 3000 hits, is he suddenly more worthy? The selection process is largely a crock. It’s supposed to measure a player’s dominance, his impact on the game during the era in which he played… which IMHO has only a passing correlation at best with 3000 hits, 500 home runs, 300 wins, or any other “magic” number.

And NOW he’s trying to backtrack the entire statement. I won’t even waste my time reading it.

by ReggieARodJeter on Aug 23, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's the thing about Rice...

There are folks who will say Rice deserves the be in the HoF despite questionable career numbers, because one must look at the intangibles, his impact on the game and such.

Many of those same people say Don Mattingly should NOT be in the HoF because he didn’t put up sufficiently worthy career numbers, despite Mattingly’s impact on the game and such.

You can’t have it both ways, folks!

Now Jim Rice is in… so when are you inducting Mattingly? Speaking personally, I don’t care which side of the fence in the above argument one falls on BUT whichever side that is, you gotta apply it equally across the board.

So… WHEN DOES MATTINGLY GO IN?

by pinstriper on Aug 25, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mattingly

He didn’t play enough, plain and simple. He had the bad back and too many seasons
