A little info on second-round pick J.R. Murphy

Jr_murphy_medium

The folks from IMG Academies, where New York Yankees' second-round pick John Ryan Murphy learned the game, have passed along some info on the young catching prospect.

Here is a collection of scouting reports about Murphy.

Murphy seems like the latest in a long line of about a gazillion catching prospects the Yankees have stockpiled in their farm system. Seems like they are well-stocked to replace Jorge Posada when that time comes.

Seems like a Russel Martin type

I like to hear that he’s more of a line drive hitter vs. a power hitter.

The power should come in time.

Hmmmm,doesn't sound too shabby for a 2nd round pick...If he's patient w/the power,that's a plus

Murphy’s bat attracts most of the attention, as he has a short, sharp righthanded swing that generates good bat speed and plate coverage. Scouts grade his hit tool ahead of his power, though he’s expected to produce average power with wood. He’s also athletic, having made a shift from outfield (and occasionally third base) to catcher. He’s shown he’s more than capable of handling catcher, showing plus arm strength, solid receiving ability and a quick transfer. The Miami recruit has intelligence and makeup needed for the position,

He's also already about Posada's size.....

Murphy= 6’0 190lbs (drafted)
Posada=6’2 190lbs (now)

Not bad to be bulky at that position as long as you’re conditioned for it.

P.S Chambliss76, I feel your pain but that had nothing to do with this post.

The

only thing that bothered me somewhat about last night’s game was A-Rods AB where he hit into a double play. The slider Tomko threw him wasn’t a pitch to swing at if you’re first-pitch swinging. It did not start out over the plate and then break down and away sharply. It was low and away before its break and after it broke it was a pitch that could not be hit hard anywhere. He should not have been fooled by that. It was never in a good hitting area. I know the stats show A-Rod has gotten many hits that have either put the Yanks ahead or tied the game and that stands for something, but a lot of times when he’s up with RISP I expect pretty much what happened last night or twice last week against Scott Richmond. He just seems too jumpy. Other than that they hit some balls hard last night that were caught and it’ was their 14th game in 14 days and there’s been some travel (NY-Seattle, Seattle-Oakland). It was a strange game.

Seriousness of A-Rod injury being kept secret...

A-Rod came out of last weeks walk-off celebration limping and holding his hip. He also, if you watch closely and know him well enough, has a half hop when landing on one leg after the swing. Happens at least once per at bat. Big concern of mine that Yanks do not talk about it because if I see it they obviously know about this and what is really going on. I expect off season surgery to fix this hip already. He is not running the bases the same and is no longer a threat to steal like before. He looks very sluggish out there, but I do not think it is his fault.

C'mon

We have known all season that A-Rod would have a second hip operation after the season. The Yankees were up front about that from the beginning. No news flash there. He hasn’t been 100% all season, and won’t be this year at all. But, we have known that all along. He hasn’t run well since he came back, that’s nothing new.

JR WHO???

We have 2 highly touted catchng prospects almost ready now, Pasada is now 38 years old. We also have emergency temp fill-in (Cervelli), why even draft this JR unless he is so special, and if he is, me bad? I think he may go for the pitching that wasn’t available in the draft this year. Don’t be surprised if he isn’t traded in the near future.

He's 18 y/o. He's got a long way to go.

Cervelli should be nothing more than a career backup unless he really figures his hitting out. Montero probably will be more of a Victor Martinez type, he’s in line for the future DH spot unless he can switch to the OF. We have Tex at 1B, so barring injury Montero will not be a 1B if he’s not going to be a catcher.

Austin Romine has no patience at the plate. He might be the most complete C in the farm.

Murphy like I said is a Russel Martin type. He can play 3rd and was an OF too. He is an athlete with a polished bat.

Since he’s only 18, the other guys really don’t have much to do with him. Montero is only 19, but he’s had a ton of time in the minors already.

If JR is going to make it, it won’t be until 2013 or 2014.

Simple

You draft the guys you think are the best players, regardless of position. Baseball drafts are so unpredictable, you never know which guys will be great and which ones will flop. So what it seems they are heavy on catchers? They could all flop. Maybe this kid will star, maybe he flops. Maybe he becomes trade bait. Nobody knows.

No shortage of catchers

Catchers get hurt all the time. You can never have enough catchers, especially if they call a good game. That’s why guys like Charlie O’ Brien, Gregg Zaun, and even John Flaherty can play forever even if they hit .235 a season. So it may look like a backlog of catchers now but you never know how things play out.

Mauer

Unless the twins keep him, the yankees should consider mauer.
That would be a hell of a lineup.
Cervelli can be molina’s replacement/ maybe DH if he turns out to always hit as well as he did.

by JMP on Aug 18, 2009 1:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

plus i feel like this kid wouldn’t be the answer. Posada will be like 42 or 43 before he makes the bigs (if he does). Molina will also be declining. So at any rate they will need to get another catcher before he comes up

I think you mean Montero DHing

Cervelli’s been around long enough that him and DH should not be put together (unless he gets some supplements from David Ortiz’ trainer)

Mauer? Id love to have him, Im sure there aren’t many teams that wouldn’t want him. But he’s gonna be a lifetime Twin.

They’re moving into a new stadium and should generate plenty of revenue. I highly doubt he leaves there.

Plus

He’s also a Minnesota native, if I remember correctly (speaking of Mauer). I would be very surprised if he didn’t give the Twins a home town discount. Honestly, I’m not too sure that isn’t a bad thing for baseball. It’s nice to see guys like Jeter, Bernie, Posada, Ripkin, etc. play for one team and one team only throughout their careers.

with all these catchers, pitching prospects and CF’s we seem pretty set at those positions. Catchers can be converted to corner infielders. Cano at 2nd for a while… But what about SS? Its pretty obvious we wont need Jete to move to the outfield…

Yankees Draft

The Yankees Drafts are improving year by year. With Jorge Posada on the latter side of his career, drafting a promising catcher was a great decision. Heathcott looks promising aswell

Yankees Pre Game Event, Boston

In case anyone’s coming to Boston this weekend for the series, Bar10 (my fave in Boston) at The Westin Copley Place in Back Bay is having a huge pre-game event, a NY vs. Boston battle of the beers and chowder. Beers are only $2, Brooklyn Lager I think.
Safe travels.

I've heard a lot of talk about Montero...

Lots of people have brought up his lack of arm strength: I have two things to say regarding that.
1.) He’s only 19 years old, his body and strength are still a work in progress that will increase over time.
2.) If you frequent baseballprospectus.com or have read Baseball Between the Numbers, you know their thoughts on a catcher’s defense. Their study narrowed what a catcher does on defense to ten things, one of these was throw out runner, while the other 9 dealt with working with the pitcher. They also looked at CERA (Catcher’s ERA) and whether or not a catcher influences the way a pitcher performs. All their findings pointed to a very very small correlation between pitcher performance and who was catching. Even if Montero winds up a poor defensive catcher, he’s likely to only be a couple runs below replacement. However, if he has the power bat he’s shown in the minors along with the patience and on base ability we’ve already seen, a couple dozen runs above replacement is easily attainable.

Of course, this whole point is unimportant if we give Mauer $200 million.
