Home Run Record
This year we've been thinking about the overall home run record set by the 1997 Mariner's (264) for a single season, but one we haven't been paying much attention to is a less relevant, but still existent record: Most players with 20 or more home runs in a single season. According to Baseball Almanac, the American League record stands at 7 ('96 Orioles, 2000 Blue Jays, 2005 Rangers). Currently, our Yankees have three players (Teixeira, A-Rod, Damon) who have hit the 20 home run mark, with four others (Swisher-18, Cano-18, Matsui-17, Posada-15) clearly on pace. That would give us seven, tying the record.
Two things I think are worth mentioning are that Derek Jeter has 13 and Melky Cabrera has 11. While I don't expect either of them to hit the 20 mark, stranger things have happened and it would be cool to hold the record. The other thing is that all three of the current records represent the "Steroid Era" in Major League Baseball to its fullest extent. While A-Rod has admitted to using PEDs in the past, I can confidently say our Yankees look like they may wind up with the "cleanest" seven 20-home-run guys, so to speak.
I just thought it was something worth mentioning as well as something to root for.
Keep your eyes on right field!

Yea
I was starting to take notice to the same thing after this latest homestand. You expected 20 Hrs from ARod,Tex,maybe even Swish or Posada. But I didn’t think Matsui would turn it around like he has,and although a good hitter, I didn’t see Cano possibly hitting 20 this year so easily either. Bombers indeed.

I think 7 players with 20 is a lock
Swisher and Cano are only 2 away, and considering Swisher is better on the road and Cano is equal, they probably will get it over the road trip.
Mats is a lock too, Posada maybe. Only 5 HR needed for Jorge, but its not unheard of for him to go on a tear.
Jeter I doubt it. Im surprised he has this many. 20 HR is not out of the ordinary for him. I thought in recent years he forgot all about that short porch in right and stopped driving those pop ups that way, but he’s found it again.
I hope he has the chance at least with this new foot injury not being too serious. I doubt he misses time or complains about it, Jete never does, but it probably will effect him anyway.

Melk is a possible to break the record too

11 HR?
Im surprised Melk got this far, usually he hits 8 HR in April then never hits one again.
I guess he could get there, but Id give it like a 5% chance.
Id rather not see him try too, the HR gets in his head and he needs to not be doing that.

Fair enough,
He’s slumping now, But he’s getting much more playing time in the second half. The increased at bats and his improved approach were what I was thinking about.

Yeah
I agree completely, then he’ll be a proud member of the 500 home runs club
