Smoltz?
What will it cost the Yanks to take a flier on Smoltz? I know, I know. He has been horrible. This is simply a matter of risk / reward. If it is relatively low cost then what is the risk? He could be a decent #5 option (no worse than Mitre and maybe gets a shot in the arm playing in NY) or a good option in the pen. The man can still throw and he has been a "warrior" for years.

He can't get LH batters out...
bad idea in this Stadium.

Your line of logic is the same as Epsteins
See how that panned out for them?

Only if he'd go to Scranton
Then I’d jump on him.
If I's known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself. Casey

Mulder
For the price you might pay for Smoltz you might as well sign Mulder and give him a few starts in AAA to see how he’s throwing. Smoltz pitched horribly against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Yankee stadium is not suited for him. Mulder can give you a good outing every five days and keep the team’s bullpen fresh in some starts. In Smoltz’s case if he’s good he can last, if he’s bad the bullpen will have a lot of work.
I’d take my chances with Mulder.
Lets Go Yankees!!

Mulder & Smoltz
Thinking about Mitre and Gaudin starting in Seattle is a little scary. Gaudin came up big in Wed’s game against Toronto and definitely deserves a chance.
If I had to choose, I would say absolutely not to Smoltz, and I would take a look at Mulder. However, are Smoltz and Mulder really an improvement over Mitre, Gaudin, and anything else we could send out there? My gut says they aren’t going to be much better.

no
Take it from the Braves…they seem to know when a pitcher is all done:
-Parted with Maddux at his twilight
-Let go an expired Tom Glavine after he clearly lost “da pepper” (and yea,not even the Mets picked him back up)
-Showed Smoltz the door into his eventual AL demise.
So why go after him if your the Yankees?

this is the reason I wouldn't even go after Mulder
The Cards know what they are doing with pitchers too, they’ve have plenty of retread’s become hella successful. Adam Wainwright is really the only that isn’t. Carpenter, Piniero, Lohse, Wellemeyer all were left for dead pretty much.
Mulder would be real painful to watch. Not cuz he’s a bad pitcher, but cuz he will eventually get hurt. He’s shot. Let the Pissants pick him up and fail with them.

Reclamation projects
With a comfortable grasp on a playoff spot it really doesn’t make sense for the Yankees to take on a reclamation project like Mulder or Smoltz. There’s no gain as the 4 starters for the playoffs are pretty much set. It’s stupid for Mitre to be in the rotation instead of Hughes or even Aceves, but signing Smoltz or Mulder doesn’t solve that problem.
