Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Fourth of July: Jays at Yankees

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees, Jul 4, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

Today is a celebration of everything that truly matters.

It is a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and where we are headed.

Today is a rousing annunciation of how the things we have in common are greater than our differences; these are the things that create our common identity and the sense of unity that have preserved us in hours of darkness, and these are the things that will continue to guide us as we move forward into the 21st century.

Today is George Steinbrenner's birthday.  It is his vision of dominance that has fueled the Yankees for 36 years, and this vision has become pinstriped creed.

The Yankees have won 8 of 9, and they sit 2 games behind Boston for the division.

Eyes on the prize.

What is it with Yankee pitchers when they get ahead 0-2?

They can’t finish anyone off. Looks like it’ll be another short outing for Wang today, unfortunately.

Sigh

DirectTV Extra Innings doesnt seem to have the game on.

Fox has rights to airing Saturday day games

Blame MLB for selling those rights to Fox. For me that means I don’t watch much Baseball on Saturdays. Kind of defeats the idea of a captive market for Fox when a member of their target market, like myself, doesn’t watch.

by Rusty23 on Jul 4, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that would inhibit

his ability to pick the ball up. You may be on to something tho.

by Lord Duggan on Jul 4, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

CANO!

Lead the league in LOB why don’t you!

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

Do you think that Eiland or Girardi needs to slap Wang on

the head and tell him to keep the ball down? Or is that too much to ask of him?

by cph on Jul 4, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

You mean the guy that

has 44 pitches through 4 and given up the same amount of runs as Doc Holliday? You mean smack that guy?

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 4, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I mean the guy who has given up 4 runs in 5 1/3 innings

because he won’t/can’t keep the ball down. That’s the guy.

by cph on Jul 4, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

They offense needs to tag Halladay

Nothing would give Wang more confidence than a win against the leagues best pitcher.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 4, 2009 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

Posada HR...

batting 6th. Matsui, battign 7th. Cano ends rally batting 5th.

Is there something wrong here?

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

and you have 2 guys who have had multiple 100 RBI seasons batting behind him.

I can see if Cano was getting on, but A-Rod and Tex are on ALL THE TIME!

Matsui NEEDs to go back the the 5 hole.

IF Mats is in the 5 hole I have no doubts he has at leat 15 more RBI and possibly the Yanks a few more wins. Its THAT big a deal right now with Cano.

Cano hits HR, he get on. But NOT with RISP.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

really don;t noe wat happen

Wang threw one pitch then Posada calls out the trainer and girardi

by lololol on Jul 4, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Robertson can't throw strikes either

Man, isn’t there anyone on the team who can get the ball over the plate (other than Swisher)?

by cph on Jul 4, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

DAMNNN

We are just hammering Halladay

by lololol on Jul 4, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Hammering Halladay

The Yanks can hammer guys like Halladay and Santana, but couldnt hit the Nats starters. What gives?

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

If this doesn't force Girardi

to move him out of the 5 spot, I don’t know what will.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Cano

Bat him 9th or better yet trade him for someone that gives a damn

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

We need Cano?

For what DP’s, defense without much range, lackadasial play? Who needs a guy that doesnt give it his all every time? And what do the Jets have to do with anything?

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Please..

No Mo in a tie game, he is terrible when it’s not a save situation.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

The game is in the bag...

For the Jays. I love Mo, but he stinks when he doesnt have the lead.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Why can't Hughes go 2?

Mo stinks when he comes in a tie game. Girardi is a moron. Mo has already gotten the go-ahead run on. There goes the game

by cph on Jul 4, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

Nothing like...

Losing to a team from Canada on our Independence Day. Thanks Joe, I hope they cancel you and your stupid show.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

Hughes

I hope he’s okay after his strenuous outing. It is ridiculous how roles dictate what happens over intelligence. 8 pitches.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

The world must becoming to an end, Mo didnt give it away. Go bring it home in the 9th boys.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

So much for Mo

"""stinking""" in a tie game.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

I don't understand the Hughes limits either

but Id trust MO for one inning over Hughes for 2 still.

But I do think Joe needs to trot out Hughes for a 2nd inning, especially after an 8 pitch one.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Mo

He did the job, but you have to admit he has been terrible in tie games recently.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I think Hughes is in a much better position to go 2 or 3

innings than Mo is. Using Mo in a tie game in the 9th is both wasting Hughes and putting Mo in a situation where he hasn’t done well. Doesn’t make sense, whether Joe gets away with it today or not.

by cph on Jul 4, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe they are saving Hughes

We dont if Wang’s shoulder is a big problem, so they dont want to “overwork” Hughes. I think Mitre would be brought up, Hughes is too valuable in the pen right now.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Mo has the experience over Hughes but..

But the hitters know Mo better, and 8 pitches? Give a break with the Hughes Rules.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

I can just see

there being runners on, 2 outs, and Cano up………………………….

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

I hope Cano...

Gets the runs, and has to come out of the game.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I was afraid ..

The Yanks overworked Aardsma the other night but he’s done well. Good job M’s.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

Oh dammit

I think I called this.

Lets hope Im wrong about the 2nd part…..

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

EVen game all around

5 R, 10 hits, 0 errors.

Except for one, Jays 16 LOB, Yankees 14 LOB……and there are 2 runners on, with Cano up…….

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

That couldve been a DP

If only there was one out Robbie, get em next time.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

Lets get this done

cuz if this goes another inning Girardi’s gonna have to trot out the bullpen security guard

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

Or

We may see Cano disappoint again.

by Rusty23 on Jul 4, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Might we see ...

Swisher making an appearance out of the pen?

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

Hinske might get into a game someday

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

Dont know why ...

They aquired Hinske, Girardi just wont use him. Swisher needs a long rest.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope

The Yankees pull this out before we get a Tomko appearance

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

huh....

Coke throws 8 and goes 2, but Hughes nyet?

I think at least this time Girardi has an excuse with Wang potentially missing his next start.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

Coke

Girardi had confidence that Cano would win the game, shows how much he knows.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Demaso Marte Who?

Coke has been the lefty we thought we were getting in Marte. And to think the Pirates didnt want him in that deal. The Pirates did win that deal though.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully

Brett can get on somehow and then take a few with his feet

by RicketyCricket on Jul 4, 2009 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

They can hit Halladay...

But Shawn Camp is like Sandy Koufax? I just dont get it.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

Yankees

Should package Tomko and Ransom to another team for a player to be named later.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

Damon

Has already come through for us today so you cant be upset with that but i’m disappointed in jeter for that K

by RicketyCricket on Jul 4, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

Well...

If Tomko can keep it together Cano will have a shot at redemption

by RicketyCricket on Jul 4, 2009 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

no doubt

that would mean ANYTHING can happen.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 4, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

And Pigs will fly

If Tomko and Cano come through in the same game.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Tomko barely comes thru the inning

i guess it’s cano’s turn to step up?

by lololol on Jul 4, 2009 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

I’m not used to guys named Brett coming through for my teams

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

Cano

If he comes through after Tomko did, I’m going to put in some lotto tonight.

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

Camp

Has thrown over 30 pitches, he has to be getting tired, right?

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

Walk ARod

Cano hits into a DP, Tex to third, Posada strikes out looking

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

TEX!

Such a stud jesus i’m glad we have him for a while

by RicketyCricket on Jul 4, 2009 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

3-1

Odds Cano hits into a DP

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

If the was Cano's call

He gets benched and moved down to the 8 spot. If Girardi called that then he officially is the dumbest manager I have ever seen. If Cano missed the sign, that just means he is stupid AND incompetent.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 4, 2009 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

hahaha

awesome joe and cano better buy jorge’s tonight

by RicketyCricket on Jul 4, 2009 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

I dont think it was Cano

I think this is on Girardi. At least Posada came through

by YankeesJets on Jul 4, 2009 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Nice game

Well actually seemed pretty bad, but a win is a win. Is Wang injured or just hurt? Is Cano ever gonna be dropped in the order? Is Girardi gonna start making really stupid calls that could cost games? Tune in tomorrow to find out!

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 4, 2009 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

I'm glad we won

But that bunt was inexcusable. I want to know who thought that was a good idea. Somebody better ask him about that. He’ll probably deflect or give a non answer tho

by RicketyCricket on Jul 4, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

Stay tuned to the Joe Girardi Show

Cano wont understand the Question, and Joe will say so what, we won. How many more of these bone headed moves will he make. With everyday he manages he devalues the NL Manager Of The Year Award.
