Bronson Arroyo to the Yanks almost Done.

http://www.nesn.com/2009/07/report-arroyo-to-yankees-will-get-done.html

Thought I would share this with you all.  What are everyones thoughts about this possibly happening? I think that he would be a very good 5th starter for the Yankees

I have to wonder who it is the Yankees would be giving up in order to get this deal done, A lower level pitching prospect? maybe the Big Red Machine would except Shelley Duncan

Arroyos salary is pretty steep for a 5th man but is certainly managable.  He has very good experience in the AL East and knows the pressure he will be dealing with.

Thoughts?

Yanks said Arroyo ‘not realistic at this point’ due to his large contract.

maybe

his 5.2 ERA have something to do with it?

or his 5.41 FIP?

or his 5.2 K/9?

Bronson Arroyo has done nothing this year that would suggest he’s an upgrade over anyone. he’s also on the bill for at least 15M more (9.5 M this year. 11M next year, 11M in 2011 with a 2 M buyout)

essentially, his trade value is south of Kei Igawa

by RollingWave on Jul 28, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

also

before you even open your mouth. his road ERA is 4.8 and teams are OPSing .800 against him on the road. in the NL central.

he’s useless. and he’s being paid well to boot.

If the Yankees trade for Arroyo, they should demand a prospect back, not the other way around.

It could

be real? I did copy the link of off NESN’s website so the credibility goes as far as you could trust NESN and the source at FANHOUSE. I am not sure how reliable it is, but the source is out there and I am posting it for the rest of this Great Yankee Fan base to discuss.

I guess with every rumor there is a possibility that it is just that, a rumor. On the other hand its possible there is truth to it.

We will find out in about 4 days…

no,

NESN is NE sports, far from reputable when talking about things non Red Sox.

The Yankes have shut this rumor down anyway.

i’ll take him over mitre and he has pitched big games.

by jv52yankees on Jul 28, 2009 12:33 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I ll go with him over Mitre and company in the 5th hole.. He pitches in a homer /hitters paradise and he has experience in the AL EAST … I still say they should find a workhorse to fit in with CC preferably with some big game experience and Arroyo does have that …

by MUSKRAT on Jul 28, 2009 12:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yes because

as we all know, Yankee stadium is not a home run paradise

by RollingWave on Jul 28, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No because

your buying into little more of half of yrs stats against a certified launching pad with a much longer body of stats to judge … Also he pitched in Fenway where the last I checked wasnt too friendly to pitchers either.. I would love Lee or Halladay as well but I would rather go with Arroyo than Mitre or Aceves the rest of the way and keep in mind Joba will be moved into the pen or restricted in say about 5 starts … if he stays in the pen you have CC..AJ ..Pettitte and Mitre as your top 4 in a 7 game series and that my friend leads to a 1st round exit ..

by MUSKRAT on Jul 28, 2009 2:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

his ERA

outside of the “certified launching pad” this year is 4.80 .

The Great American Ball park is a launching pad. but it’s also a NL central team. readjust for the AL east and it’s a wash. you could look back and say that he was good in the AL east. but that’s 5 years ago and he’s now 32. theres also a equally good chance that he’s not good.

What’s more. is that he’s still on contract next year at 11M. if he is good and all that wouldn’t be terrible, but if he’s not? your stuck with another untradable contract and puts a serious problem in your plans to sign a LF / DH (not to meantion another SP)

If Arroyo’s a FA after 09. I wouldn’t be opposed to rolling the dice here. but he’s not. so that’ pretty much shoot down the chances of trading for him.

The difference between him and say.. Bobby Abreu, is that Abreu had a long track record of being good to very good. he was still good in Philly at the time, just not 16M good. Arroyo have a long track record of being mediocare with a few nice years thrown in. and he’s having a bad year now.

I don't think Arroyo

would have pitched that much better than Mitre has in his 2 starts. Surely not enough faith there to warrant the huge difference in salary. With all of the $$ the Yanks have coming off of the books after this season, it would be insane to commit that kind of money to an average pitcher “with a few nice years thrown in”, as RW says (that description hits the nail on the head).

That move would make the Yankees worse next year (lessening their chances of being able to afford a grade A FA), while MAYBE making them marginally better this year. And that is a big maybe.

Snell is a better option. He is unhappy in Pittsburg, makes less, is younger, and has more potential.

If Cashman makes a trade for Arroyo, he has fallen on his head.

arroyo

Yea what possible purpose could the Yankees have for bringing in arroyo. The guy has a 5 plus era in the NL and is being paid more than he deserves. Not to mention the yankees would have to give up prospects to get him. When the playoffs come he’d be useless because we have our 4 man rotation. And next yr we’ll find someone better if not work from within for starters. So altogether it just makes no sense and would be a forced move that might help the yanks win 1 or 2 extra games at most. for 15 mil thats retarded. Plus mitre has looked ok, i say hes aiight for the last half to be the 5th guy.

by dyanks10 on Jul 28, 2009 9:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he does have a 5 plus era but the yanks offense is so good right now that it wont matter and he has a lot of experience

by VictorM on Jul 28, 2009 9:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Catch 22

Pretty steep in price, not horrible for a fifth guy. Might be a little more trustworthy than Mitre at this point. Former teamate of Johnny Damon so he’s got a guy to break him into the clubhouse culture,check………..not impressed with the numbers…….ERA OVER 5? In the NL? IDK Sports Fans………………………..

Let me Clarify

I know Bronson isnt the 04 version … I figure if the Reds eat some money and the prospects are marginal …he is a lot closer to a 4 than a 5 … and the reality is Joba is going back to the pen or is being restricted due to innings … that leaves you with Mitre as your number 4 …either way you have to make a move ..the arguments are valid against Arroyo however I think he is an upgrade over Mitre and you are an injury away from Mitre being your number 3…. I read a report today that the Jays would take either Joba or Hughes plus a mix of our top guys inluding Jackson..Romine…and Montero.. If you can make that trade without adding either Hughes or Joba …YOU HAVE TO make it… that leaves your depth in place and your rotation is devasting ..in a seven game playoff against the Sawx or Angels they have to face Doc ..CC ..AJ and Pettitte with probably CC and or Doc going twice.. Arroyo is a band aid as is Mitre.. not that there is anything wrong but if you are assuming Wang is out for the season and Joba is going to be restricted due to innings you NEED TO add depth …

Seriously

The guy has a 5 plus ERA in the NL. How in theyone be excited about Arroyo. I’d rather leave it to Mitre

I see things you don't see.

Do it.

Great pick-up for 4th/5th man. He knows the AL East. Can pitch in big markets/games. With Andy’s age showing the last two seasons (wouldn’t be surprised if this is his last season) and the unknown of Burnett’s health, it is very important to lock up some more arms on the front end.

Dont Do it!

He gives up too many flat balls, aka at yankee stadium too many HRs. Stay away from Bronson please, go get Washburn please.

by jsballer3314 on Jul 29, 2009 1:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

but to be fair

Washburn gives up too many balls that need stewardesses on them…but are caught at Safeco.

No Way...

Cashman is on crack if he thinks Arroyo is a viable #5…
