Game 78: More lefties

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees, Jul 2, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

It would be nice if Girardi could find a way to break up the two lefties in the rotation. I don't know for a fact that seeing the same handed pitcher on consecutive days is detrimental, but common sense says it is.

Our best pitcher, CC Sabathia, goes for the sweep against Jason Vargas ('Vargas!'), who missed all of last season due to a torn hip labrum (um... you hear that, Alex?).

Sabathia hasn't faced the M's since 2007, but has done well against all their hitters (OPS under .754) except Ichiro (1.132 OPS). He's been great in his last three starts (16.1 ip, 2.81 ERA), so let's hope that continues.

Vargas has never faced any Yankee hitter, and has sucked in his last three starts (16.1 ip, 7.16 ERA), so let's hope that continues.

It seems like

Ichiro has great numbers against every pitcher in MLB. He really is an amazing hitter. He has batted .300, had 200 hits, scored 100 runs, and stolen 30 bases in EVERY one of his eight seasons. That’s borderline unfair. Hopefully CC brings it.

and he actually hits LHP

better! what i wonder is how good he’d be if he batted from his natural right side.

Francisco The Great

is in the lineup. How can we lose?

by Ed Valentine on Jul 2, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

my thoughts exactly

*rolls eyes
i wonder how all the Cervelli maniacs will take him getting sent down to AAA once Molina is back

by Brian5517209 on Jul 2, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

although i DO appreciate what Cervelli has done

he’s been a blessing and been solid defensively with a few nice hits, but he’s still no Posada

All you Cervelli lovers out there better do your lovin' prettty quick

Check out the article on the Yankees web site today. This may be Cervelli’s last start, as Molina is beginning his rehab stint and, barring a setback, will rejoin the Yanks next week, in which case old Franky (a/k/a Yogi/Berra/Dickey) will be heading down to Scranton.

(no, i’m not letting it die just yet.)

by Travis G on Jul 2, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

Its a good thing Cervelli can frame pitches.....

and his technique of moving behind the plate shows his mastery of the position…..

The Kid teaches Jorge everything there is to know about the position….

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Cervelli's arm is so strong

that the wind gust behind the throw caused Langerhans to slide off the base.

That was all Cervelli and damn you if you don’t think so.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

wtf

Cervelli is catching why don’t we have a perfect game going?

by Brian5517209 on Jul 2, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

I think you would rather the Yankees lose so you can keep up your schtick against this kid

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 2, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Sabathia giving up 3 runs in a start is

unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable. He should be giving up 1 run in every start no matter what.

They were in a 3-0 whole and the morale of the team took a shit. They have no chance in this game and I am now a Red Sox fan. GO Kevin Uterus!!

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

Another gem from Sterling

He called Tex’s lineout to Cedeno as a groundout to Woodward.

He came back next inning and said “his head was down”. You can guess where.

by cph on Jul 2, 2009 8:45 PM EDT reply actions

Wow you guys cant give it a rest can you

Like I said, I think some of you would rather them lose with this kid catching so you can continue your tired diatribes. Great fans, you sound like some of the guys at OTM.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 2, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No one is serious

I think that this little internet thing overshadows that

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

Well honestly, it has been non stop riding Cervelli. Differences aside, I get the distinct feeling a few poster take more personal satisfaction feeling justified than seeing the Yanks win. I would rather be dead wrong about every single opinion I have if it meant winning the East.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 2, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think people want the Yanks to lose

I just think it’s an understanable reaction to the irrational exuberance some have about Cervelli. But we can deal with it for another week, until he’s down in Scranton.

by cph on Jul 2, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think anyone

has anything against Cervelli.

I know I honestly appreciate what he’s done and am looking forward to his future with the ORG.

Its just the idea of some people bashing the hell out of Posada that is wrong. Id rather not get into that of course, but I really have nothing against Cervelli being the backup and starting 60-70 games this season (he’s on pace for more like 50-60 tho.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

All wise-assing aside.

I honestly think its just that CC is due for an off game.

That’s all.

Its on the O to bail him out today.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Why should he be "due" for an off game?

You make it sound like it’s all a matter of luck. There is something he’s doing/not doing that’s causing him to pitch very poorly today. 6 runs in less than 4 innings is April Wang-like, not “an off game”.

by cph on Jul 2, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Its not like a pitcher can come out firing every game

sometime theres those days where u have trouble locating ur pitches and the hitters have ur number…

by lololol on Jul 2, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

The guy's been lights out for a month and a half

It happens over a 162 game season, or 35 plus starts if you’re CC.

If it happens the next time out, then at least Id be concerned.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL!

I know.

We’d have the entire peanut gallery here whipping out the whole Joba to the you know where argument.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

Which makes less sense. A 23 year old starter should get MORE rope than an Ace, not the other way around. Joba and Phil make how much money?

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 2, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

well CC doesn;t have a Bullpen or starter agruement everytime he pitches

Joba would be more penalized because ppl will be like " look he should be in the pen"

CC has been sure thing since the end of april and him being off tonight can be considered of those nights some pitcher have

by lololol on Jul 2, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Once again

I think he makes more money when he takes a piss break between innings than Hughs and Joba combined. Not that I am arguing, its fine to have an off night. I just think the kids should get more slack.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 2, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

But it should work both ways

people forget that Joba is essentially a rookie. He’s obviously gonna have more bad games than CC.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

As A-Rod strikes out....

CC has given up 6.

What does he do from here on out? I watched Beckett this week not have his good stuff. He let up 5 runs, but got through 7 and kept the Orioles at 5 runs.

Does CC allow more? I think he still should get to throw his 115-120 pitches and see how far that goes, given that he doesn’t let up a few more runs.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

WAIT!

STOP the Presses.

Robinson Cano WALKS!
Holy Shit!

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe Aceves

Should be a damn starter. How good is this guy?

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jul 2, 2009 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

Another miss by John Sterling

He needs to go to the bullpen, I think. Or out to pasture.

by cph on Jul 2, 2009 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

OK - it'll either be 3 up, 3 down in 9 pitches, or

they’ll score 3 runs and A-Rod will leave the bases loaded.

by cph on Jul 2, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Cano's

having one of those 10 pitch 1-2 counts again…..

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Single.

Keep doing what your doing Cano.

…Cano should be batting leadoff.

Nodbody on, he does great.
