Yankees Trade For Halladay??

Is it Worth it?

Star-divide

I Heard a rumor that the Yankees might pursue Toronto's Ace. This is just a rumor but what would they Yankees give up to receive one if not the best pitcher in baseball? Their were talks possible giving up Joba and Hughes.  Would giving up two great prospects be worth it? Roy could help any team in the long run, but its just a matter of giving up Top prospects.

that would be a mistake.......

not one but 2 prospects? IDK about that one. I would MAYBE package one of the outfielders, a top minor league guy,and MAYBE one of the guys you mentioned. But all in all,as long as he doesn’t go tho the Sawx or Angels Im good. I like the team the way it is.

My guess is . . .

the price is going to be too steep for anyone to swallow at this time. More then likely Toronto will not ship him out until next year, and only if they are losing.

If they do ship him out the price won’t be as steep. I would bank on this more than anything.

If it comes to his contract running out I would say that the Yankees may look hard at him then, although he will be about 35+ at the time.

Steep values...

Well Halladay is a dominant pitcher but i agree with you guys on this one, overall i think the Yanks will be good with Hughes and Joba. Just hope that the Red Sox dont get him some how. They were talking about possibly giving up Youkillis and Bucholtz but thats a rumor also. In the end hopefully he doesnt go to a team in the division…

I wouldn't worry about the Sox

1) They would have to hand over keys to the farm for Halladay which Theo won’t do
2) They have to give Doc a helluva contract for him to agree
3) They have a bunch of players going FA soon and I am pretty sure they know their “hometown discount” ain’t gonna be that much lower than what other teams will offer them

So basically unless they are willing to part with a fortune of kids and a current starter AND they are willing to add a giant salary AND they are gonna have to resign a bunch of their core pretty soon they won’t make a deal.

Halladay...

So you guys think Halladay is going to remain put then? and what happends when his contract is up? what teams might be interested?

I think that the Angels, Giants, Yankees, and Sox will throw shitloads of cash at him when he hits the market. But I am not sure anyone will give up the pieces to get him. I think that the Rangers might. I dont think the Giants will. If the Yankees have to give up Hughes, AJax, and two more mid-level prospects, they should do it. The Sox wont give up what they have. The Angels just dont have the system to make that kind of a deal.

I think it comes out with the Jays getting less for him, or him signing with one of those 4 teams when he hits Free Agency.

I really don't see anyone selling the farm for him

I really believe that he won’t move until next summer at the earliest, and that is only if the Jays are losing, and more then likely he will end up on the market and make a killing.

The question is, will he be worth it then? He will be about 35 I think and who knows if he will have that much left in his tank. More then likely he will be dominant until he is 38 39 or so, but there are no guarantees of that.

I say let it rest, unless the Sox get in the mix, and then get in the mix to drive the price up.

Where exactly did this “rumor” come from anyway??

by The Brain part II on Jul 10, 2009 3:49 PM EDT reply actions

Rumors

It was on ESPN so i decided to hear what everbody else thinks of these " possibilities " it most likely isnt going to happen because no team isnt going to wanna give up their Prospects for a high paid pitcher in this economy, even if he is one of the best.

Speaking of trades

the Mets traded Ryan Church to the Braves for Frenchy.

Maybe Halladay to the Yanks COULD happen?…….

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 10, 2009 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Trades

Well its always a possiblity, in my opinion the yankees have people they could give up for him to complete the pitching rotation, but its just the question whether the Yanks will pull the triger to go get him and whether the Jays feel like its a complete deal to deal their ace to a division rival…

Im kidding

It really makes no sense to go all in for Halladay.

CC, Halladay, AJ, Pettite, makes for a hell of a top 4. But they are gonna have to throw Joba and/or Hughes in that deal (and Montero and/or AJAX)

I don’t think they are gonna be as good as Halladay, cuz Doc is the best in the game right now and that’s a tough projection, but the total cost of prospects with AJAX a potential starting CF in the mold of Vernon Wells or Jesus Montero in the mold of ….who the hell knows but he’s gonna be good.

The Jays are not as bad as they were when they traded Coney and Clemons to the Yankees. They have a nice lineup and if anything I see them trading Scott Rolen if anything.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 10, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally...

I dont really wanna see the Yankees give up numerous amounts of prospects to get one pitcher. But if the they could get him for a decent deal which i doubt they are going to get. then go for it. But i doubt anybody is going to wanna give up numerous prospects for one pitcher.

Tempting, but...

Realistically you’d think the Yankees would have to give up 3 of Joba, Hughes, Ajax, Montero, maybe 2 if they included Joba because he brings some name recognition that the Jays could sell to their fans. Still while Halladay would make the Yankees overwhelming favorites to win it all this year they’d still have to extend him for 23+ mil a year for 4 or 5 years at the end of the season and Halladay is 32, not 29 like Johan was when he got dealt, or Pedro when he got dealt to the Red Sox for that matter. It would leave the farm pretty much barren. As tempting as it is, it probably just isn’t smart management.

you're probably right

that it would take 3 of Joba, Hughes, Ajax, Jesus to land Halladay. maybe if we took Wells, we could only give up two?…

by Travis G on Jul 11, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Make it Happen

I would give up Joba or Hughes not both …AJax…Melky and Montero …I would take back Halladay and take on either Rios or Wells contract… That probably wouldnt do it but I would build the framework around that and continue until it doesnt make sense…The Jays have sent us Ace pitchers before in Cone and Clemens and I think CC..Halladay..AJ and Andy with Hughes or Joba in the 8th brings us number 27..

by MUSKRAT on Jul 11, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

I'm pretty sure

That like the Santana trade they’re just using the Red Sox / Yankee as leverage. without any serious thought that they would actually trade them.

FWIW, Jon Lester has been more Valuable than Johan Santana since the start of 2008, so becareful what you wish fore sometimes.

How to land Halladay

Aroldis Chapman, outbid everyone and send him to TDot

by DustinPedroia aka Keebler Elf on Jul 12, 2009 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

I would not give up Montero. Right now he is listed as the 3rd best prospect in baseball. I was shocked by that, but I think that makes him a guy you keep. He is someone the Yankees need to build the next dynasty around.

by Michael Uhlhorn on Jul 12, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Its a lot easier to aquire bats and more importantly develop bats than arms… With that said as highly touted as Montero is .. I would include him in a heart beat for Halladay…As far as prospects go I remember Homer Bush being the second coming of Willie Randolph and yet being included in the Clemens deal with David Wells.. As far as the comparisons to Santana…yes Santana is younger …HOWEVER .. there were rumors that Santana had lost velocity on his fastball and even at his best was never the horse that Halladay is…Lastly Halladay has worked against us the Rays and Sawx where Santana toiled in the Central..I hope the Jays are not using us as leverage because if we can acquire Doc and line up CC ..DOC and AJ are staff probably becomes the best in baseball.. or very close to it …
