Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Joba or Hughes

Clearly, both of these guys have the capacity of being absolutely awesome. We've seen flashes of utter dominance, but also utter incompetence. Joba this year has disappointed all of us, and despite being built like a mini-CC, has yet to get into the 8th inning in his CAREER. He was just so thoroughly dominant in the bullpen, and although it's rare that anyone makes solid contact on him, those walks are starting to become a nasty habit.

Meanwhile, Hughes wasn't pretty either in the rotation, and lo and behold, when he moves to the bullpen, he's like Joba 2.0. It's preposterously frustrating. Also, CMW was effective from the bullpen before his return to the rotation. I don't know what it is about the Yankees' bullpen, but it seems that we should just move all of our starters there and watch them have hall-of-fame careers.

In light of Hughes' success and Joba's continued control issues, should we do a switcheroo? Give Hughes a try in the rotation? Right before Wang came back he was pitching well. And his stuff translates a little better to the rotation, with more pitches, while Joba's seems to be made for an end-of-the-night role. I know the question of where to put Joba is nothing new, but we've seen what he does in the rotation now. Was it the right move?

Phil should be in the Pen for this year. Wang can walk after the season. Slide Hughes into the rotation after he has gained confidence. Dominating the 8th inning gave Joba an extra amount of confidence and I think helped to make him the pitcher we see today. Phil will have a chance to benefit the same way. This is the right thing for the Yankees to do, especially since they plan to have both eventually in the rotation.

Don't mess with a good thing

With the team clicking right now and Hughes dominating every time they bring him into a game don’t touch barely a thing. I would move Hughes into the 8th inning spot and give Bruney some 6th and 7th innings to get his stuff back. Ultimately Hughes is going to start, but this is the experience he needs, seeing big time hitters in important games. I have no doubt that we have a pair of great starters for the future, all I ask is “Joe don’t mess them up” I don’t one or both of them to end up like Dontre Willis.

but do remember.........

Joba is on an innings limit, which ends him up in the pen anyway.

June 1st in CLE.....

Joba threw 8 complete(but yea, that was the only time)

......

STILL!

How come when he comes out and deals for 6 and a third there are e-tumbleweeds on this subject?

Let it GO! Hughes will be back in the rotation, whether is shutting Joba down for a little while or someone gets hurt or someone pitches like crap (point to you WANG!).

Joba = Starter.

I think what everyone is debating

is whether or not he’ll be effective long term. Me personally, I’d have them switch, but not NOW. Too late. Go with what gets the wins.

Personally

Id rather have BOTH in the rotation. Which is the plan. Which is smart.

One or both may end up in the pen, but hopefully its when either is around 38 y/o.

Let him work through it. Guys like Beckett never really were all that good during the season until they struggled for years.

Who knows. Joba might end being like Beckett when he was younger. Around an average pitcher during the season, but when the playoffs started, the guy was the dominant starter people thought he’d be.

the big thing is mentality

that is why all of a sudden hughes looks better, you dont have to hold back anything coming out of the bullpen you can throw 95, 96, 97 all the time and you dont worry about stamina. This is Joba’s first / second year as a starter and hes working on an innings limit, just give it time, if this is joba 2 years from now lets worry, but like syllk said, everyone is basically clicking on the pitching staff now, dont fix it if it isnt broke!

The fact is

it’s just easier to be a reliever than a starter. You use less pitches, don’t have to face anyone more than once in a game, and are often put into the game at an advantageous time. Joba and Hughes both have the potential to develop dominating stuff, which they have both shown at times this season, there’s no reason why their arms should be wasted in middle relief when they’ve both shown a proclivity to start. In the long term, both of them belong in the rotation unless they absolutely prove that they can’t get the job done there.

Answer This

Who has a better number 5 guy. I’ll take a 3.8 ERA from my fifth any day, any year any team.

I see things you don't see.

Joba would really be amazing if he would throw the ball over the plate more consistently, this whole 5-6 innings pitched every time isn’t gonna cut it

by BlackandGoldSSgt on Jul 5, 2009 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

yea

that $85 million they spent in FA on the rook means he should be going deeper in games.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 5, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s only going 5 innings because he’s on an innings limit. They’re purposely taking him out earlier than normal to keep him from getting fatigued. I think his innings limit is 150 innings this year, so if he starts 32 games this year, he’s going to average 4 2/3 innings per start. If he pitches too many innings, they’ll have to take him out of the rotation so he doesn’t exceed the limit they set for him.

No...

…he’s going 5 innings because he’s always at 100 pitches by then.
