Yankees-Rays Recap: Seismology

When was the last time Mariano Rivera issued an intentional base on balls?

When was the last time Mariano Rivera issued an intentional base on balls and was then lifted after 2 outs to give way for the LOOGY?

And is anyone surprised that this scenario ended badly?

I was watching on Gameday, so I couldn't tell how Mo was pitching, but historically any hook is a quick hook.

Joe Posnanksi just posted an interesting breakdown of the value of walks- teams with 7+ walks have posted a .715 winning percentage in the last 5 years.  Which, of course, underscores what a poor job the Yankees did getting the big hit today.  (Poz also discusses his contempt for the IBB, a disposition I share entirely).

On the other hand, good teams put men on base, and the Rays had 13 hits and walks to the Yanks 12.

I'll try not to let this one bother me.  We'll get 'em tomorrow at 1; Garza v. Joba.

didn't notice that from the gameday

thing either.

The last time…ONLY time, I’ve ever seen Mo get taken out was the last time.

I didn’t think the criticize Girardi and I really don’t know cuz I didn’t see Mo pitch either. But Rivera has always been better against LH batters to begin with, so why would you take him out?

I don’t like when Mo comes in to non save situations, but still you have to put your best reliever in.

Mo

You take him out so that you can save him for another day, that’s all.

Mo has trouble in non saves.

That’s why Girardi should have let C.C pitch the 9th. He over thinks all the time.

By the way

Unless Hughes get pitch the 8th well or you’re gonna make Joba a bullpen guy again. Trade for bullpen help. There are 2 thing ya gotta understand. One, the bullpen is awful leading to Mo( who is getting old) . Number 2 , the core of this team is old. If they don’t win it all this or next year they probably won’t win it for ten years. Therefore even Hughes is touchable for the right proven pitcher. I’m thinking trade him and some else for Lee or Street.

you're right on the

bullpen being pretty bad right now.

Everything else is false, especially the 2 year window and trading Hughes for guys like Street or Lee. Unless we’re talking Roy Oswalt or Zach Grienke, there’s no way Hughes gets included in anything.

The only guy that looks ""old"" at times this season is Matsui, and that’s really just running the bases and the reason why he’s the DH.

MO

No argument with bringing in Mo to pitch the 9th. Game was tied with the top of our lineup coming up in the bottom of the 9th…a good chance to win against their bullpen. Just needed to hold them in the top of the 9th. Problem was that Mo just didn’t have it today. Little movement on his pitches. He left them out over the plate and you saw the results. Girardi obviously recognized that and took him out. We all have a bad day once in a while. Today it was Mo’s turn.
