Game 54: Wang returns

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees, Jun 4, 2009 1:05 PM EDT

Chien Ming-Wang, who hasn't started a major league game since April 18, will make his (long-awaited?) return this afternoon against Texas' Brandon McCarthy.

It will be very interesting to see how Wang does. If he pitches the way he has in his last two relief appearances (5 ip, 0 er, 3 h, 1 bb, 5 k), there'll be nothing to talk about. But what if he implodes? Texas is a very good offensive team, and he's pitching in a hitter-friendly park.

Wang has a 4.84 ERA in 22.1 innings against the Rangers. We all know about his two scoreless relief innings in Texas last week, but his last start happened back in 2007 (when he gave up seven runs in 6.1 innings). Ironically, McCarthy was the starter for Texas in that very game (which was also his last vs. the Yanks), that the Rangers won 14-2. McCarthy pitched well: 5.1 ip, 1 er.

Let's win this rubber match and series. We've got a very tough stretch coming up.

Jeter and Posada are out of the lineup. Girardi (thinking about the ground-baller Wang) is replacing them with superior defenders: Pena and Cervelli. Also great to see Tex back.

Aaaaaaand thanks A-Rod

We could always use a double play when we get a good break in the first.

You know

A-Rod is doing fine considering his injury. He is playing flawless 3rd base and giving Tex good looks at the plate. His discipline has faltered this past week, but he was a big reason the Yanks have been on such a good run. So far so good for Wang. I hope he keeps it up so he can give a big middle finger to everyone here who thinks Hughes should start over Wang.

Being a little sensitive?

Is there a reason I got a warning? Did I offend you? Is your skin really that thin? Or are you still angry that I called you out for not picking the Yankees to take the East?

You know Travis

I don’t appreciate your blogs warning. It’s funny, I have posted much more attacking posts to other posters on this site in good fun. Yet when it is you who takes a little heat I get the Pinstripe Alley Warning. Me thinks someone likes his authority too much.

Happy

We think you shouldn’t be “attacking” anybody. Disagree, rationally, and with a good argument. But, we have been over the whole personal attack thing. We are all on the same side, whether we agree or not.

One more thing

Travis and I may not agree on Wang v. Hughes, but we do agree on the type of site we want to run. This is not just directed at ‘Happy,’ it’s for everyone. We want a friendly site where people can talk about the Yankees, and where people can respect each other even when they disagree.

by Ed Valentine on Jun 4, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You know

It’s one thing to want a “Family Friendly” site, it is quite another to sit on a bully pulpit. Never was I warned before when I was poking at other members about such ridiculous things as Joba going to the pen, or benching Matsui etc. But the second I say anything off color to to Travis I get slammed with a warning. I would really like to have you guys send me direct quotes of mine that have been PERSONALLY offensive, or irresponsible. I will be honest, I like your site, not for you guys, but for the other fans. Both the happy cheery aw shucks types as well as the grittier, annoying trolls. I am not vile, I am do not personally insult anyone for anything other than sheer stupidity. My god man, your site is for a team from the Bronx, stop putting doiles on everything. Wanna see a insulting people? Go check out Overthegreenmoster. So I would appreciate not getting a Warning unless it is really deserved. Like making fun of someones disability, talking lewdly about one’s mother. But because I said something even remotely off color to that other guy I get slammed? I think you are guys are too sensitive to actually have ever lived in the Bronx.

agreed

our hitting has been utter crap also.

by lololol on Jun 4, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

There's nothing borderline about it

Wang is an embarrassment, this is now 8 bad starts in his last 10, dating back to 2008 before he was injured.

There’s no way any sane person could argue that Wang is a better option than Hughes right now.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Wang wasn't good

still it was better than his last times out.

It was as good as Hughes has been in his first few starts, so I don’t get how anyone could say he’s an embarassment.

8/10 starts now? I know he wasn’t up to par his last few starts before last season ended abruptly, but that’s just the ebb and flow of the season. The injury had nothing to do with those starts, so I don’t know how you can correlate the bad starts from last season with this one.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I correlate them with...

…Wang being overrated as a starting pitcher.

If you’re happy with this start being better than his last times out, good for you, but it would have been practically impossible for him to be worse than that.

And you’re crazy if you think Wang’s performance today was as good as Hughes lately. Five of Phil’s 7 starts were better than Wang today, and another one (against Boston) was about the same.

Hughes shut this exact Rangers team down less than 2 weeks ago. You’re blind.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You are way over-reacting

In the first place, the rumors of Wang’s demise are greatly exaggerated. Reminds me of everybody who was ready to toss Moose right before his 20-win season—and in that case, at least there was a lot of historical precedence to the conclusion that Moose was past his prime. Secondly, this is not about Hughes v Wang. There are so many nuances to this — innings limits, Pettitte’s back, veteran/historic performance, etc. It’s easier, I guess, to have two distinct sides in a conflict, and I suppose that’s why this is getting so much ink today. But that’s just not the reality here. Wang needed/deserved a start. And Hughes is the odd man out.

But I'm not wrong...

…about Wang’s performance vs. Hughes in 2009.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

And to be honest...

…nobody “deserves” anything. Wang pitched like crap, and has had four horrendous starts this season.

Hughes has done nothing to deserve demotion to the bullpen, and nothing Wang did today proves that he’s a better rotation option.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I ain't blind

Im just looking at the overall picture and not just at this split second.

I know Hughes has been pretty good lately and actually pitched incredible against this same team.

This is a long term thing. Wang needs to be in the rotation over Hughes cuz he is a veteran and has proved in the past that he is one of the better starters in the AL.

This was Wang’s first start in a while. He obviously wasn’t healthy in the beginning of the season.

Of course he deserves to prove himself again. The guy was the team’s ace for 2 seasons, you don’t just turn a blind eye to that guy.

And of course 1 outing isn’t gonna determine one thing.

Did anyone in their right mind expect Wang to go 8 innings and dominate the whole game?

I expected a bit better than this, but you can essentially count this as his first start of the season.

Have to be patient.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

He was never an ace...

…he happened to be the Yanks best pitcher, but he was no ace.

Halladay, Beckett, etc, those are aces. Dominant stuff.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Gotta disagree

An ace of your staff doesn’t mean the guy is Top 5 in all of baseball.

Wang isn’t up there with CC, but that doesn’t mean he’s not an ace. He’s a legit 1A.

And your arguement about he wasn’t very good in his last 2 starts in 2008 is horribly wrong. He went 7 innings 1 run agains Oakland, and in the Houston/injury game he was through 5 innings and 0 runs.

Wang was pretty dominant at times during those 19 win seasons.

I really don’t understand why anyone would argue so much against the guy?

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

the guy was 8-2 when he went down.

Pitchers have bad stretches all the time.

That he was 8-2 and still had a stretch of no-decisions/5-6 run games and losses is testament to how good he was in 2008 before the injury.

Your all wrong on this guy.

The yankees won a lot of games with Wang as their #1, you can’t argue with that.

It wasn’t even that he was one of those guys with unfathomable run support either, he WAS DOMINANT.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes may have done nothing to

deserve a demotion to the bullpen, but it happens all the time. Kid hits a game-winning homerun, and then when the veteran returns from the DL, he’s on the first bus back to Scranton.

Well hopefully

This is a stepping stone for Wang. A far cry from his past starts this season. The Rangers are a good hitting team no doubt and he might had some jitters. I am not watching the game so I am curious to what his 4 seam velocity was. I am hopeful this is a step in the right direction, 5 runs in 4.2 innings is NOT good but hopefully we get a better outting next start and hopefully this motivates Hughes as well. Yankees really are great this year with the walks. Nice to see that patience at the plate!

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jun 4, 2009 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

His veloicty was in the low 90's with his fast ball

He barely used the sinker, and when he did it was not near the plate. The sinker that did get the plate was hit for a hr. Surprising tho he had 5 SO’s in 4.2 innings which is not what he does. Primary he was relying on his fastball and slider i think.

conclude that this is a “stepping stone” unless, of course, you mean a stepping stone in the wrong direction.

by cph on Jun 4, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

You are what the problem is

Fans who have no patience for anyone. You are probably the moron who boos at A-Rod after a strikeout considering how this team has been performing since he returned. 5 runs in 4.2 aren’t good. It sure is a lot better than 8 runs in 2 innings. It amazes me how much leeway Hughes gets from fans considering in the big picture of things, he has done absolutely nothing for the Yankees yet. But Wanger gets knocked out for the season, struggles to get back on target and yahoos like you want him out of pinstripes. Yes it IS a step in the right direction. Hopefully when Wang isn’t facing the best hitting team in baseball his next start he will bring the runs down and extend his innings. Maybe if he gets 3-4 more starts his velocity will start getting back to mid 90’s. It only took Joba 2 full months to get his velocity back to his normal range, and he is 23. You are a fairweather fan and are more suited for RedSox Nation. So go troll there.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jun 4, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

So someone disagrees...

…and you question their loyalty to the Yankees.

That’s BS and immature. You can paint Wang’s performance any way you want, but it would have been literally impossible for him to be worse than his first 3 starts this season. If you want to call that a stepping stone, be my guest, but 5 runs in 4.2 innings is garbage.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

It is garbage

but you have to give the guy another shot to come back.

Hughes had 4 RUNS IN 5 INNINGS HIS LAST START, that’s not exactly a way to make a case for yourself now is it?

If Hughes threw anywhere close to the way he did against Baltimore, then you would think he earned another start.

And What the hell did you expect out of this start? Maybe a bit better than what he showed, and of course better than the beginning of the season, but IMO it wasn’t anywhere close to what he showed in the beginning

He blanked the Rangers the first 2 innings, so that has to be considered a stepping stone.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I expected...

…exactly what we got. Typical Wang start. He gets in a little trouble and falls apart. Just like in the 2007 playoffs, when our “ace” threw up all over himself.

If you’re happy with Wang’s two scoreless innings, maybe we should put him in the bullpen where an outing like that would be acceptable.

by New York Sports Jerk on Jun 4, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

1) I’d settle for one clutch hit from A-Rod if it comes in the World Series.

And I aint comparing Wang to CC at all. Im talking about playoffs (PLAYOFFS?).

You started that one when talking about if Wang sucked in the playoffs, yet he was actually better than CC in the playoffs.

Wang is a well above average pitcher. A step below the elite category that holds CC, Halladay, Oswalt etc., but he’s right in that category of AJ Burnett caliber pitchers.

I really don’t know what your problem is with CM Wang, but ‘your’ wrong on this

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Someone will have to explain to me...

…when Wang was “dominant.”

Because I’ve watched 150 yankee games a year for, I don’t know, my entire life, and while Wang has always been good, he’s never been dominant.

I’ve listed dominant pitchers. Wang doesn’t even come close.

My problem with Wang is that I have no trust in him to come through in a big spot, because he can’t adjust if his sinker isn’t working. They asked him to be their ace in the 2007 playoffs, and he shrunk, period.

Maybe that’s shortsighted, but I have no faith in him. If you tell me you want him out there, that’s fine, but I’d take CC, Burnett, Joba, Hughes and Pettitte before Wang, because every one of them has more than one pitch they can rely on.

by LateInningRelief on Jun 4, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

well maybe 12 of those missed

games were ones in which Wang started and was dominant.

I mean if your idea of dominant is striking out 12 batters a game. then Wang obviously will never be dominant, that’s not his game.

But you can be dominant when you constantly get ground ball outs.

Your biggest arguement is Wang’s last 10 starts, well look at the last 2 starts; 1 run in 12 1/3 inning? Pretty dominant right there.

CG against the Red Sox earlier that season…1 Run,

Yes he had a down stretch, BUT HE WAS 8-2!!! Where does that show ‘average’?

I agree comparing him with CC is wrong, but look at CC’s season with the Indians last season, he was far from an ace. Guys have slumps, even one of the top 5 starters in teh game have down stretches. Whether their arm is sore, they got an ingrown toenail, who the hell knows, guys just are rarely dominant every single start and many times it occurs for a stretch.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 4, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

ok

Give Hughes now the ball vs. the Mets, I am tired of giving Wang the benefit of the doubt because of what he did when Torre was here. Your reputation only gets you so far. Hughes is coming of an 8 inning beauty vs. the same Texas squad Wang got lit up by today. Good to see the offense can atleast bail him out.

by bleachercreatures on Jun 4, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions

Reputation?

Two 19 win seasons in a row in his first 2 full seasons is not a reputation, it is a down right metal brand of excellence. Hughes pitched one good game. Hughes is the future in our rotation. Wang is 29, he got hurt, his mechanics needed to be worked on and his arm needs to strengthen up. How many starts did it take Joba to start hitting 97 again? Anyone who thinks Wang is a lost cause is either myopic, ignorant or racist. You throw Wang out there another few starts. If he still is throwing poorly you either make up another injury or put him in the pen. Wang is gonna get better, maybe more slowly than we all want because most Yankees fans don’t have any patience for anyone these days. Wang is too talented, too young, and been too consistent for this team. You let him work his way back.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jun 4, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

from the bullpen, though...

…i agree with you he is not a lost cause. he can’t just all of a sudden suck.

but how many time can you throw him back out there as a starter, hoping for the best? or hoping the offense can pick him up? if he needs to continue to tweak his mechanics to get things right, fine- but you can’t do that as a started at ML level.

by NumberSeven on Jun 4, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

Andy didn’t do too well yesterday. CC was hit early on so was Joba, AJ had a mediocre month, Hughes was mediocre except for his start in Texas. And none of these pitchers can say they were coming off a season ending injury on their back leg. Look, he gave up 5 against one of the best hitting teams in baseball. Ok. So next start hopefully he goes 5+ and gives up 3. You cannot expect someone to all of a sudden go from mechanical issues and weak arm to being an ace again. He is gonna need the starts. He starts putting up crooked numbers in the next couple starts than you do something about it. Luckily the rest of the rotation and our hitters enable him the ability to work it out on the mound.

Great Win

now we have a big 10 games ahead of us….lets go 8-2, including a sweep of the sox

by holycowboy on Jun 4, 2009 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Keep Wang in

the rotation, please. The guy needs to regain his form and I think this start was definitely a stepping stone. His strength and bread and butter pitches will return to form. I guarantee it.

by OSUlovesSwisher on Jun 4, 2009 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

i kind of agree

He was good the first 2 innings and seemed like he as about to get out of a jam in the 3nd, but then it just blew apart form there. He seems to lose it whenever the first run scores. I still think it’s a mental thing, cuz out of the bullpen when we had the lead he was simply dominant.

Also Hughes is young and he will have plenty of chances. Right now we should try to let a former ace regain his form
