Hinske? Yanks acquire Hinske?

This makes sense how?

Pete A. says the roster move is likely to be young Pena.  But I cannot see this as an upgrade.

Hinske is a .250 hitter (left) and I don't remember seeing him play middle infield.  So, short and second backup go to Cody Ransom?  Maybe Cody is headed out?

It's true we got this guy for nothing from our loaded minor league teams (two A players) and some money, which is also in good supply, but why?

Anybody able to explain this to me?

Hinske becomes our 5th outfielder, who can also play 1B and 3B, and can slug .450 while doing it. Not too shabby.

He's only slugged .450 3 years out of 8

He can’t play 3B; we already have backup at 1B. He’s just another over-the-hill former rookie of the year (calling Angel Berroa) who hopefully will not cause too much problems sitting on the bench. Sending Pena down is a big loss. There is basically no major league quality backup in the middle infield. Not to mention what it does to Pena’s psyche. But it’s the Yankees all over again, going with age and name over talent.

Pena's psyche?

have you read the interview of pena before he was sent down. He felt like the luckiest guy in the world to play as much as he did. he thought he would get spot defensive replacement duties after the 7th inning during a blowout or pinch runner duties. he got that and got a few starts on top of that. not to mention the veterans loved him, he became buddies with the starters he backed up. it was a great experience but i think he realizes what his role is though and the yankees want to turn him into a super-utility guy and train him in the OF.

originally he was never thought to even be a major leaguer, this experience has given him a brighter future and if anything makes him more confident, he’s not jason giambi being threatened to be sent down bc of an april funk, he’s barely 20 years old and goes down to the minors knowing the yankees have plans for him in the future.

riding the bench any longer WOULD hurt him though, he still only got 21 at bats in June, he actually IS a switch hitter and the yankees want him to get more right handed at bats, so dont be surprise if he struggles at the plate in the minors at first…this is the best move for yanks right now, and even better for the future

First off

the Pirates payed for 1/2 his remaining salary this season (wow!).

Basically he’s Shelley Duncan, except he hits LH, can play 3rd, and has actually proven himself (at least much more so than Shelley).

Plus he’s a lot like Swisher except he hits about 10-20 points higher.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

Sure he can play third

He is also two years older with less pop. This move makes no sense to me with Duncan already in the farm system.

by Mr. h on Jun 30, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Duncan has NOT

hit 20 HR before. Duncan does NOT have more pop and hasn’t proven anything other than being a AAAA player.

Id take Hinske over him anyday

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 30, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Hinske hit 20 HR last year

It makes sense because the one thing this team is really missing is some pop off the bench. Pena, Cervelli, and Gardner are slap hitters when they’re at their best. I really hope it’s Ransom who’s sent down and not Pena; Ransom is worthless.

I want them to get Lance Berkman. He’s got a high priced contract that the Astros might want to dump. The Astros have to know that they aren’t going to make the playoffs anyway.

by Wraithpk on Jun 30, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

hell with berkman,

lets just trade kei igawa for pujols…

by tombradylikesdudes on Jun 30, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets also

buy Matt Wieters from Baltimore.

Trade Brett Tomko and Shelley Duncan for Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder.

Then we’ll trade Andrew Brackman to the Giants for TIm Lincecum.

BAM! Contenders.

Love the sarcasm

Please tell me you were joking about berkman, i mean great hitter…. but y absorb his contract? And who do we give up? Hinske is the perfect fit, good OBP, has a little pop, can play multiple positions. Also, he’s got maturity and been on winning teams. Also, we got him for almost nothing. With Nady gone for the season, Derosa would have been the only other player to make sense…. and he already was traded.

by bdman318 on Jul 1, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

of course I was joking

I mean “wraithpick” suggested that he wants Berkman on the team. Who the hell wouldn’t? I mean you would have to force him back in the outfield (he is a 1B now…) but the guy’s a great hitter. Him A-Rod and Tex in the middle?

The Contract wouldn’t be an issue either…

But who cares? Berkman to the Yankees is pullled out of nowhere and it makes no sense.

But I like Hinske. Not a great player, but servicable. Does he play 3rd well? Absolutely not. I think they’ll try him out there once in a while and I think he should make a few plays why not?

post 2010 season free agency

why trade away a stud like tomko when before 2011 we can sign pujols, jeter, and carl crawford?

we would already have signed halladay duh, and then maybe we can sign beckett and cliff lee.

oh and TIM REDDING would also be available!

2010 FA period?

FK all of them.

Yankees sign Lebron to max deal.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 2, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, they say he could play football why not baseball?

that depends, which big man has more power of persuasion, CC or SHAQ

by brxbomber on Jul 2, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Duncan/Hinske

I don’t get why the Yankees would make this move before even giving Shelley Duncan a shot to get some major league at bats. I’m not saying I think Shelley is going to be a great or even a good major league hitter but I think he deserved a shot to at least prove he was on the level of Eric Hinske.

Also please don’t send down Ramiro Pena. Pena’s shown himself to be a quality utility infielder. It’s silly to send him down for fear that someone will claim Cody Ransom. Who cares if they do?

by Let's Talk About Tex Baby on Jun 30, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

pena's shown himself to be a capable

of being an everyday player. that’s why you send him down to get daily at bats.

by tombradylikesdudes on Jun 30, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

plus...

..they want him to get sometime in OF too- and you don’t have young player learn a new position in the majors. It makes sense to send him down- hopefully we’ll see him again soon.

by NumberSeven on Jul 1, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Ransom Demands

Let’s just say I wouldn’t give any $$ to keep this guy on roster. I liked Berroa (ugh!!) better than him. Get rid of him and keep Pena, who’s been a GREAT bench/utility man for them.

by icevasser on Jul 1, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Still the best way to learn to be a major league player is by playing in the majors. Also if Pena is going to have a role on this team in the next few years it’s going to be as a backup, not a starter. There’s nothing wrong with him perfecting that role, and he is clearly a better major league player right now than Cody Ransom.

big picture

You have to consider the needs of the Red Sox with Lowell on the DL. They could use a bat who can play 3rd base, and now that Beltre is on the DL in Seattle, such players who can be had cheap are in short supply now.

I am sorry for making this post

somehow I missed the one on the front page. It was a fanshot but I should have joined that thread.

I think the yankees should pay Hinske’s salary if the Nation would promise to give him 40 games at third.

Read what Pete at Lohud has to say on the subject.

http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2009/07/01/hinske-at-the-hot-corner/

If I's known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself. Casey

Hinske

He will play third today and get two hits. When they drop to 11 pitchers in the play offs, Pena will be back
