Cano Hitting Fifth!!!!!!

There is no way in hell that Robinson Cano should be hitting 5th.  Until he masters plate discipline and the benefits of taking a pitch every now and then there is no way he should be hitting 5th.  He puts no pressure on the pitcher at all.  They ought to speak to him about that again because it's obviuous that in spite of his strong start he's falling back into that pattern of not being selective.  Bat Posada or Swisher 5th.  Get Cano out of there!!!!!!

Compared to last year, his plate discipline has increased ten fold. He’ll never be the type who sees 4 or 5 pitches every at bat, it’s just not the approach he takes to the game. He won’t draw a lot of walks, and trying to force him into doing so will simply stunt the type of player he is.
Let’s take two players from the Angels for example:
Player A has a career line of: .322/.388/.572 with 162 game averages of 37 doubles, 36 HRs, and 117 RBI.
Player B has a career line of: .300/.405/.495 with 162 game averages of 41 doubles, 21 HRs, and 97 RBI.
In this case, player A is Vlad Guerrero and B is Bobby Abreu. Both excellent batting averages, Abreu of course takes more walks than Vlad, but Vlad has always had more power. The major difference is over their careers, Guerrero has swung at the first pitch 71% of the time while Abreu has swung at the first pitch 6% of the time.
The point is that plate discipline isn’t everything. I do think it’s very important and Robbie has come a long way, especially since last year. I know he has a ton of room for improvement, and maybe he’s not the best suited player to be batting 5th right now, but a sense of discipline at the plate isn’t everything.

Plate discipline isn't everything

for some players. Guys like Vlad are rare. He hits balls 2 feet off the outside corner for HR. Guys who don’t swing until he has 2 strikes like Abreu are also rare.

Cano is one who should have plate discipline. When he swings at that first pitch or early in the count, he’s ike last year as in not very good. Even this season, when he swings even early in the count, he’s not very good.

When Cano takes his time in the AB not necessarily to get a good pitch, but simply to get his timing down, he’s very dangerous as we’ve seen.

If Cano swung at the first pitch 71% of the time this season, not only would he be batting 50 points less, but Id be on my third TV cuz Id throw the first 2 out the window.

I love Cano but.....

And it burns me to say this, his next clutch hit will be his first. I cannot remember this guy every coming through in the clutch for us, And I am sooo sick if seeing him come up in big situations and dribble a measely grounder to 2nd base. Cano is one of my favorite players, but the more I watch the more I cringe whenever he is up in a big situation…

I think they like to hit him 5th when Matsui is playing to break up the lefties.

cano hitting 5th sounds fine to me

hes hitting .306 going into the game today that’s 2nd best to only melky i believe. Who cares if he doesnt walk alot? if he struggles in the 5-hole they’ll move him down and put Posada there. Matsui shouldn’t be there he’s been too inconsistent. Who are your other options Melky and Swisher? Melky needs to be at the bottom of the order to have Jeter and Damon behind him. We’ll see if Cano struggles Posada gets his spot back.

In case you're wondering.............

studies I’ve read about lineup factors indicate the 5th batter leads off the second most innings besides the #1 hitter. Also, 5th place hitters come up in many 2 out rbi situations as well. I don’t think cano is patient enough or clutch enough to consistently hit 5th for the best baseball team in the AL right now. Posada is the man for the job by all indications.

I don't want to play golf. When I hit a ball, I want someone else to go chase it. ~Rogers Hornsby

Cano can't bat 5th

The reason is when Cano bat with men on base to tends to expand the zone and over swing. If just would play with discipline he be like Utley. By the way I’ll bet that if Vlad did only swing at strikes his average and slugging percentage would go up. It’s not about when an okay pitch to hit comes . If comes with 1st one fine. It’s about not swinging at balls.
