Mariano Rivera hits with the bases loaded
Mariano puts a nice swing on a 95 MPH fastball. Mariano hitting can be seen here. This all time great never fails to put on a show.
I once saw mariano fielding during batting practice at Camden yards. Someone hit a deep drive to centerfield, but they didn't know Mo was lurking. Mo drifted back to the warning track, lept, reached his arm over the fence and snagged a would-be HR. 75 words

Yeah thats great
But what happened if he got beaned, or got injured on the base paths? At the point he was at the plate the Yankees were up 4. His arm is worth more than his bat. Look at what happened to Wang last season. Just sayin

but since he didn't get hurt...
…that was the coolest.
He definitely shouldn’t have been hitting, I agree. Mo does a great job staying healthy, but when a closer (or any AL pitcher) does something unfamiliar, anything can happen.
Still, it was really neat to see. I wish that liner fell a little faster.

Scott Downs is no Mariano Rivera
But our (Bluejay) closer has been out for a couple weeks after running out the basepads.
There was alot of debate over at our SBnation site of why he was batting in the first place.
As a result all Pitchers have been instructed not to swing in interleague play and look like idiots in the batters box staring at 3 straight strikes.

MO
has always been a great athlete. He was signed as a SS from Panama, became a SP, then of course the rest is history.
The only way MO was getting hurt was if he got hit in the head. I highly doubt a pitcher beans him, not just cuz he probably has no problem beaning the entire team but cuz of respect.
That was great watching MO hit. I really don’t have much doubt he could have a been at least a decent MLB SS with that swing.

Imagine the beanball war that would (should) break out tonight if Mo had gotten drilled…
He went up there because it made sense to go up there and he swung against orders. Fine him in the Kangaroo Court and be done with it.

Well
It WAS fun to watch him at bat, almost as weird as maybe watching Jeter pitch an inning. If anything did happen to him though the media would have crucified JoeG and Pena

MO
i didnt even want him to run to first….coming out the box for a pitcher is not good, instincts suggest the first few strides demand extra hammy force…i held my breath

What if his shot had dropped in or gone to the wall?
It was a hard hit ball. If it hadn’t been hit right at McLouth in center, the score would have been 10-4 or 11-4.
With a 6 or 7 run lead, I would have yenked him for a pinch runner and sent Aceves out to finish. In a heartbeat.
