Are the Yanks cursed?

Now listen.... im an enormous fan for over 20 years and im just posing the question... you dont have to sit here and flip out and say your so stupid to say such a thing but im just wondering...does anyone think the curse has been reversed on us. take a look at whats happened

2001 world series we lose in a terrible walk off fashion to the diamondbacks

2003- we lose to the florida marlins......the marlins

2004- the red sox come back from 0-3.....

2007- joba chamberlain gets assaulted by bugs that supposedly only come around for a small time a year and we lose the game and the series shifts and we lose out

not to mention the signings of players like... kevin brown...jaret wright... javier vazquez... carl pavano... all who were completely awful

steroid controversys with Arod Clemens Giambi and Pettite

the last year in yankee stadium we dont even make the playoffs for the first time in a long time

our new beautiful ballpark is now the center for concern to be an absolute launching pad

not being able to win a game vs the Red Sox this year

Well

I dunno, yeah they only had the best winning records by a mile in the decade, made the playoffs the most times (by a good margin), tied for world series appearance during this “cursed” span.

Kevin Brown and Javier Vazquez also wasn’t signed, they were traded for, in Brown’s case it’s not like keeping Jeff Weaver was a much better alternative, while in Vazquez case he didn’t actually pitch THAT poorly. but will forever be rememberd for just one moment and one moment only. Carl Pavano’s contract made some sense at the time, and what he’s doing this year kinda prove that point (unfortunately about 4 years too late.)

As for the steroids thing, at the moment it’s simply a media created witch hunt, and the team with the most stars is obviously going to take the biggest hit.

YES I AGREE WITH THE CURSE

Yes, I totally believe that it all started in 2000. We all prayed and blew the load on beating the stupid Muts and we could have never lived that down. That being said, God has punished us now and we have to wait until the curse is lifted, we pray harder or the Babe himself comes and visits the new park, thought he did last week against that Mets but think that was just Thurm popping in and give one to us.

Your not crazy..........

for making the suggestion. The Yanks have undoubtedly suffered some serious heartbreak since Paul O’Neill and Scott Brosius’ last game (which happened to be Gm7 2001) and the bust trades you mentioned and don’t forget the clubhouse cancers (Johnson,Lofton,Sheffield, Mondesi) never REALLY helped the cause……and what is even worse…………..Mo has looked mortal as of late.

Still Skeptical...

First off, it was impossible for the “curse” to have been reversed back in 2001 on account of the Red Sox didn’t win the World Series until 2004. So the 2001 and 2003 World Series losses weren’t unlike any other loss the Yankees had in the World Series before that.

Now, starting in 2004, I can see where you’re coming from that horrendus ALCS loss after being up 3-0. To me, a “curse” implies a team (usually a decent one that makes it somewhere each season) that always seems to find a way to lose when it most counts (i.e. Rex Sox from 1918-2004 and Cubs 1908-Present) or something bizarre occurs where the game is totally blown (Aaron Boone’s HR vs. Boston in 2003 or Joba’s bugs vs. Cleveland in 2007). Maybe you could argue for a curse, but I think we are all going to have to wait at least 25-30 years to really come to a conclusion. As for now, the only curse that exists in baseball is the one on the Cubbies. I don’t believe in a Yankee one.

A-Rod a curse?

Just tossing this out there…tried to go away twice and count the performance stuff makes three…yet we welcome him bac k, the Yankees have been looked at differently since we have had him, remember how we were feard and respected from 94 on…since he is here and yes I know he has a ton of talent and prob the best in the game when healthy, teams dont respect him, mock him, he brings BS to the clubhouse, etc…maybe we are better with a .280, great fielding, clucth 3B…too late now, he’s ours.
Thoughts?

PS – I still think beating the Mets in 2000 was the one that did us in, we all called in chips for that one for not to loose.

What about 1979-1995?

No championships during that time and there was no talk of curses. We as fans got spoiled in the late 90s… sure I want the Yanks to win the WS every year- but it just doesn’t happen nowadays. Am I disappointed when they don’t? Of course. But I know a lot of fans of teams in this league who would LOVE their team to be cursed the way the Yanks are.

My two cents.

ok i'll buy that...but....

dont you feel its 82-89 all over again….them were some rough years, 70-75 also…if not for thurm and donnie, i would have rolled over! scooter also…made the play by play worth the pain watching the games….

bring watson and gene michael back i say

that’ll break whatever curse and send cashman to the sox as a scout, ship eiland and long to tampa as player development reps, lets get a keg and call it a day and wait about 2-3 years for another run

Maybe it's Don Zimmer...

Think about it. The last time the Yankees won the World Series, Zim was the bench coach. I was only 6 years old when I first watched the Yankees win it all in 1996 and I always liked watching that “old guy” sitting on the bench and seeing Jeter rub his head for good luck.

Now, after an 8 year World Series victory drought and a 5 year World Series appearance drought, I have come to notice an astonishing trend. Don Zimmer joined the Yankees as their bench coach in 1996. What happened that year? They won their first World Series since 1978. Then in 1998, 1999, and 2000? World Series. All with Zim on the bench. 2003? They made it to the World Series with Zim there. (Maybe a bit of luck fell out when Pedro threw him down in Boston). Now Don Zimmer is with the Rays, and looks where they went last season. Albeit they win the World Series, but I think that was more on account of their lack of experience.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying those Yankee teams from 1996,1998,1999,2000,etc. didn’t have good players. Those guys were amazing beyond a shadow of doubt. Jeter, Knoblach, Wiliams, Brosious, Wells, Clemens, Rivera, O’Neill, Strawberry, Posada, Girardi, El Duque, etc were/are awesome and some of the greatest players of the game. Personally, I would rank the 1998 Yankees up there with the 1927 team as one of the best all-time.

So, maybe it’s actually Don Zimmer is who the Yankees need. Now, I doubt that this is the case and if it’s true or not, but I’m just putting it out there for dicussion…

your well above your age....wise call on zim

there torree sat, we all watched, zim and mel as bookends, jose, chris and willie as coaches…so that’s about 200 years of baseball…and they f’d over zim in the end as I recall, even though he took a cheat shot from pedro, who I HEARD TODAY, the yanks are considering, as well as, early reports, papelbon would be open to coming to yanks as a FA…

Not cursed - just poorly run

Their draft choices have been abyssmal. Their farm system is a mess. They don’t seem to focus on developing players; instead, they focus on winning percentages of their minor league teams. Perhaps they don’t have the personnel with the skills to develop young players. Their free agent signings have, for the most part, seem to have been based upon past rotisserie performance and little else. They mishandle injuries regularly. In short, Steinbrenner’s “baseball people” don’t know what they are doing.

No curse

It is just really hard to win championships. But the Yankees manager and coaching staff have looked lost this season.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Jun 19, 2009 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

They haven't won a WC

since 2000, that’s 9 years ago. 9 years equals a curse now????

Poorly run, from letting that same coach go to signing and trading for the wrong players to getting rid of the wrong players (Alfonson Soriano’s one of the most clutch players in the game, Ted Lilly’s not a bad pitcher either).

But Curse? I know some fans feel the right to be in the WS every year, but its really not even like the team has missed that, they were in it in 2003.

We’ll talk about ‘curse’ 50 years from now and the team is still run like this.

cashman the curse?

how the heck did he rise so fast, does he have nude pics of someone in the org? he has ruined this team….

cashman knows business not baseball thats the problem

by Ozone on Jun 19, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Shhhhhhh

curses dont exist. They exist only to annoy the opposing team’s fans!!! shhhhhh

by Ragnar808 on Jun 19, 2009 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

Curses exist....

but they are self imposed…There was never any “curse” on the Red Sox, but I sure as hell wasnt going to run to Fenway and try to get that through thick bostonian skulls. Its all about mind set and team identity. Don’t propegate negativity and frankly straight up bullshit. Thats what makes it spread. If you are intellectually regress centuries than do me a favor and burn the witch that is Jonathan Papelbon.

by Ozone on Jun 19, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

Good point...

I think it really is mental. As Yogi said, “90% of the game is half mental.” If fans and others (i.e. media, etc.) propogate the idea of a “curse” it will only eventually reach it to the team itself and have mental effects there. It’s best just to drop the issue all-together and forget it. There is no curse.

The Curse

It’s name is Cashman!!!

by outrigger on Jul 12, 2009 2:45 AM EDT reply actions

Curse thy name is Cashman!

Seriously, he should have been fired already for not trading Ian Kennedy + (insert other failed prospect) for Johan Santana.

And it’s sad I had to say ‘other failed prospect’ but many of his picks have done nothing. Whereas Theo has hit gold with more than a few in the same span

by DustinPedroia aka Keebler Elf on Jul 12, 2009 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

Considering that 'failed prospect's' name was Phil Hughes...

I suggest you failed at that

Hughes, Melky, Kennedy for Johan + $150 million? Or do we wait for CC?

I like CC better, Cashman made the right choice. OH GOD! I agreed with Cashman.

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 12, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No no no

Rumor has it (Insider required) that the Yankees may be prepared to trade Melky Cabrera, Ian Kennedy, and Chien Ming Wang for Johan Santana. http://redsoxstatsguy.blogspot.com/2007/10/johan-santana-to-yankees.html

Just one of the packages available. And by failed prospect I was not referring to Hughes (not yet at least) he’s still too young to write him off and has been pitching pretty well this year. I was more referring to

Trades: Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, Alberto Gonzalez Kevin Whelan Anthony Claggett Humberto Sanchez

1st Round Picks: Eric Duncan, John Poterson, Jeff Marquez,Carl Henry Sardihna, Griffin etc.

arod

the curse is this..

what year did Alex Rodriguez come to the Yankees? 2004

think about this..

he wears number 3 his whole life but can’t with the Yankees because the greatest player of all-time wore number 3 so arod (entering the house that ruth built) doesnt take the 11, or 12 which would be in progression of the great yankees numbers because basically all number up til then are retired or unusable. If you want to be the next great Yankee, take the next possible number.

But NOOOOOOO, arod has to take the most unlucky number in the most superstitious sport in the world. Nobody even thinks about the fact that arod is 13. It’s so unlucky its ridiclous. Large buildings will skip having a 13th floor by going strait from 12 to 14, and AROD BRINGS THIS NUMBER TO YANKEE STADIUM!?!?! is this guy serious. and the worst part about it is that every fan who wears an AROD jersey to the stadium has the number 13 on their back. Yankee Stadium has become a beehive of the unlucky number 13. I dont see us having any luck until the number 13 is off ARODs back.

I think hes a great player and I dont care what he does off the field and what not but this is ridiculous and I think to myself everyday why did he have to take the number 13. AROD said he wears number 13 because he was a huge Marino fan growing up. But he too was cursed with never winning a superbowl. terrible move AROD.

So AROD takes number 13 in 2004..the year the red sox do the unthinkable..

think about it..
