Bringing Unity back to PA
Here's some news that everyone can cheer for:
Yankees designated RHP Jose Veras for assignment. The club now has 10 days to trade, waive or release the 28-year-old, who had a 5.96 ERA in 25 2/3 innings for the Yankees this season.
From Rotoworld.com
Things like, hallelujah and 'bout time come to mind. Who gets the call up? Hopefully one of the young arms. This also probably keeps Hughes on the ML roster and in the bullpen for a while now- unless/ until CMW falters yet again.

Call up?
Think for a minute, dude! They are making a spot for Bruney, who comes off the DL tonight.

and the answer is...
they activated Bruney. Here’s hoping that elbow holds up!

I hope someone grabs Veras quick
Cuz Bruney’s arm is a time bomb that may not last 10 days.

Well ...
Once you DFA somebody you can’t bring him back, anyway. If no one takes him after the 10 days he is then a free agent.

OH.
I thought they can bring him back to the team within the 10 days.
Not sure what to think. The guy actually had a good game, NOW they banish him…..

Hopefully
Wang pitches either extremely well or really poorly tomorrow, that way they can make a decision on Hughes, him sitting in the Pen is a waste. Not to say he’s not good there, they’re just ruining his arm for next year.

Ruining his arm for next year?
That’s nonsense. He’s hardly the first guy to ever pitch out of the pen while still learning his craft. Pitching out of the pen and being asked to get key outs at the big league level teaches him more than going to AAA and dominating guys we already know can’t hit him. If he helps the team, he helps the team. This, ruining his arm and waste in the pen stuff is nonsense.

I agree
At some point there’s nothing more to prove at AAA. See Shelley Duncan.

well for Shelley
he’s more of a AAAA player. Too good for the minors, not good enough for the pros.
I guess he could help for some pop off the bench, but does this team need another corner outfielder?
If Shelley played 3rd I think he’d be on the squad already.
by FreeBradshaw on Jun 16, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd sure rather have him on the team than Berroa
I don’t really buy the AAAA label. I think if (when) Shelley gets the chance to play regularly, he’ll do well in the majors. It probably won’t be for the Yanks, though, but I’m sure he’ll come back to haunt them in the future. Then, when he’s old and over-the-hill, the Yanks can sign him at inflated $. That seems to be their m.o.

exactly
I remember listening to Orel Herscheiser during one of the Yankee games; he said the same exact thing.
This used to be the status quo for ALL rookie pitchers. You earn your respect in the pen, then you go to the rotation.
I mean, its really not like you can’t throw in between your starts to build up arm strength. Endurance really isn’t arm strength anyway, its your leg strength. And you do this by running or stationary bike. You don’t do that on a mound now do you?(i guess you can put a stat bike on the mound if you wanted to tho…)
ALL these guys have strong arms, they wouldn’t be in the league without one.

Ding dong, the witch is dead
Thank God I don’t have to watch Veras’s scatter arm anymore.

What is Veras worth to another team?
He’s still got good stuff but zero command.
by BigSlim on Jun 16, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nats, Pirates, Padres
Those types of teams can take a chance on a still fairly young guy w/his kind of arm.

The Astros are reportedly interested

There should be another name besides "relief pitcher" for Veras
Maybe enema; like “Manager Joe Girardi is signaling for the bullpen, and bringing in the enema pitcher Jose Veras for Sabathia. They need to give up more runs”!
