Yankees 9, Mets 8: The return of the ghosts
Apparently, the Yankee Stadium ghosts did make the trip across the street from the old house. How else can you explain what happened Friday night?
How on earth does Luis Castillo drop a simple game-ending pop-up, turning it into a two-run game-winning (game losing for the Mets, of course) play?
I don't know. I don't care. Thank you, Luis. We will take it.

Bill Buckner is laughing his ass off.
Un-effing-believable. I was like, damn he’s not under it he’s gonna drop-AHHAHAHAHA WE WIN.

I gotta say
I felt bad for Luis. Anytime I see this kind of massive blunder on a big stage, it makes me think of all of the lives ruined in baseball by singular moments.
If you look at the history baseball has a long list of players who have never been able to overcome the stigma of being labeled a “botcher”. Seriously a lot of these guys have become recluses like Buckner moving to the desert of Idaho or the Angels relief pitcher Donnie Ray Moore. Donny according to a NYT article “was obsessed, according to some friends, with the failure of not recording the third strike that would have won the pennant for the Angels in the 1986 playoffs”. He ended up shooting himself and his wife three years later.
I’ll take the win, but lay off the guy who makes such a horrible mistake that there is nothing anyone can say worse than the tortured thoughts on his pillow every night.

It reminds me of...
Donnie Moore from the California Angels blowing game 7 of the ALCS to the Red Sox. 2 years later, he committed suicide…sad story. Players can make physical errors, but mental errors are far far worse.

Nice Win But.....
What in the world is Girardi thinking bringing Mo into a tie game in the 8th? In September it would be a questionable move, in June it’s asinine. Mo is as bad as the rest of the pen when he enters in a non save situation. Cashman better get an 8th inning guy or this team is not gonna go to far. I think Girardi is in over his head, he is managing too tight and it will affect the players.

I agree, I guess.
But Girardi was getting a ton of flak even on this website for not bringing in his best reliever in a tied game in Boston. I would rather have seen Coke try to get the last out of the eighth, but Girardi wanted his best pitcher in against Beltran, which I can kind of understand. I think it doesn’t matter what Girardi does; if it goes wrong, it’s a bad decision. If it goes right, nobody cares.
That’s really the only issue I have with him: bullpen management. That’ll get better if they can get/find a dependable setup guy. I think you’re right in that the future of this bullpen is more in Cashman’s hands than Girardi’s.

Nope
Q: Tied in the 8th at home?
A: Mo.
Otherwise, you’re arguing that Mariano should only pitch at Yankee Stadium if the Yanks are leading in the 9th.

Oh now he's stupid for bringing Mo in the 8th?
LOL, I know it wasn’t you, but people argued that Mo should be brought in on Thursday after CC.
Now he brings him in, now he’s dumb?
Please….

What a joke!
Somebody needs to water board Castillo! Talk about choke! It’s hard not to agree with the Phillies when the Mets keep pulling crap like this. This is the better Mets team without Randolph! They can’t run bases, they can’t catch fly balls! I mean for god sake, Beltran, Murphy, and now Castillo! What a joke!!!!!

where was arod going?
can anyone explain why arod began to round first when he saw castillo drop the ball? there was no reason for him to be anywhere but standing on first base. imagine if luis made a snap throw to first while that moron rounded the base. if he got tagged out before texeira scored they might still be playing right now…

if it makes anyone feel any better, check out the mets’ blog (amazing alley). i wanted to leave a comment there, actually: “now u know how WE feel this year”… after all the crap with the Sux, gotta feel like there’s a little cosmic payback in tonight’s game somewhere. anyway, karma or no, i’ll take it!!!
once again, mo in a tie game, once again the same results. what have we learned, children?

LongB, good call… hadn’t even thought about that, too busy thanking my lucky stars for the botch and thinking what Lotto numbers to play! lol

Mo in the 8th
What message does it send to the rest of the relievers? Mo is now the 8th and 9th inning guy? Mo’s job is to CLOSE the game. What does he do when he comes in when the score is tied? He gets beat. Girardi has made a whole bunch of terrible moves in the last week. Setting up the rotation for a series in Boston in June? Throwing Wang against two of baseballs best offenses(Texas and Boston), and tonight Mo in the 8th. Girardi over thinks and it contiues to cost this team. This is why they play tight against the good teams.

Who else comes in?
Veras? Aceves again?
Bruney? Hughes? Joba?

Cone
Listening to Cone during the game and after on the postgame made me wish that Eiland(who stinks) would be replaced with Cone as pitching coach. Call me crazy but he always seems to be on point with what the pitchers are doing wrong. Why not have a pitching coach that was successful and knew how to pitch in big games in NY, than a third rate guy like Eiland?

amen to that
up until the last couple years, the Yanks have always had some of the best coaches in baseball…now who the hell do we have? crafty Cone would be a great pitching coach!

That was certainly
gift wrapped for the Yankees. Was watching the game with my wife and her Father who are Mets fans. The changes in all our reactions as the last play unfolded were priceless. On SNY, they showed a replay focused on Jerry Manuel and Sandy Alomar, Sr. You could read Alomar’s lips saying OH SHIT!

Once again the bullpen blows it and Joba pitched 4 innings giving up 2 runs. I would rather have him pitch those 4 innings over 5 days coming out of the bullpen being dominant.
by pedro316 on Jun 13, 2009 9:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually he'd still only pitch every 5th day when CC pitches.
He’s the only one who can pitch 7 innings to hand it over. The rest of the time he’ll be sitting on his ass watching the mop up crew.

Joba had a bad outing
Its what happens with young pitchers. The Yankees won.
Who’s to say he’ll be dominant again in the pen? What happens if this bullpen thin is epidemic? ALL these guys in the pen at one point were pretty damn good for a period of time, now they all suck.
Give it a break with the Joba to the pen. Cuz if he’s in the pen, who the hell starts? Don’t tell me Hughs, he pulls the same crap.

the most dissatisfying walk-off win
i can remember. however, the Yanks did deserve to win that game. they crushed almost every ball off Livan, but had relatively little to show for it. he wasn’t fooling anyone. with a bit more luck, they woud’ve scored 9 off Livan alone.
Tex deserves a lot of credit for running hard, and DJ for being the only Yankee to actually get a hit off Krod.

and i'm legitimately concerned
about Mo.
by Travis G on Jun 13, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know about Mo
I mean when the guy closes a game, he’s pretty much lights out.
I think its something to do with the entire bullpen. It has to be. Its not just Mo, its everyone.
I don’t understand it. Jose Veras at one point last year looked like the guy to be Rivera’s successor, now look at him.
There’s got to be something going on in that pen, I have no idea but its EVERYONE.

Good win.... yea right
We never should of won that game but hey…. sometimes the ball falls out of the glove. I don’t understand why Girardi put in Mo in the eighth…. but I can’t argue against it. I just don’t understand why he doesn’t let coke finish the eighth and bring in Mo in the ninth of a tie game. And Mo has always been a little shaky with three days rest brought in during a tie game…. but he needed to pitch today anyway. My problem with the move is i feel like he brought him in the eighth cause of media and fan outcry from the Boston game instead of because he felt he needed to.
