Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

E.R.A, W/L vs. another team

In my opinion, this statistic is not good at all.

Look at Burnett, wasn't he 5-0 vs. the Red Sox before last night, with an excellent game? I know everybody can be a general after the war, but teams change, batters change, and pitchers have either good/bad form. I just got a strange feeling when some of the moderator's posted that they think not having Joba pitch against the Red Sox is ok, since Burnett is filthy against them. I'm pretty sure it would've been a completely different game had Joba pitched (remember last year's game?)

What do you think, what's the best/worst statistic for a pitcher going into a game?

since i often use those stats

i believe they hold some water. for one, as long as you’re giving recent ERA vs. said team, it means something. yes, batters change, but generally the heart of the lineup is still the same (as long as you’re not going back 2+ years).

it sounds like you think the games will be random anyway, so why try to predict anything about them.

You have to go with stats

there’s nothing else to go by. Of course things even out over time, but you can’t really say that AJ’s been bad agains the Sox. Before last night, and before the 4th inning of the last time out, the guy’s been as good as any pitcher against the Sox.

The answer as to why he’s struggling is really as simple as it gets, he’s not throwing strikes. He’ll either get behind in 2-0, 3-0 counts, or even he’ll go up 0-2 then throw 3 straight balls.

This is NOT the way you get out the Red Sox hitters, they are too patient for the most part (Lowell is not, but he just kills the Yanks anyway just for old times sake).

Burnett has too good stuff to do this. When he’s on, he throw’s strikes, but he hasn’t been on for most of May.

I’ll be interested of course to see tonight what CM Wang and tomorrow what CC does. They should learn from AJ they you have to pound the strike zone, these guys are too good of hitters to get themselves out.
