Around the Yankee Universe, first-place edition

All right, so it's really only a "share" of first place with those nuisance Boston Red Sox. But, it is the first time this season the Yankees can spend a day in first place. For the Yankees and their fans, that makes it a day worth celebrating.

“It’s where you want to be,” Joe Girardi said. “You want to be at the top all the time. We went through some times. It was two and a half weeks ago that we were really scuffling and we’ve bounced back very well. It has been a team effort.”

So, on this glorious day let's look around the inter-Google at stories making the news in the Yankee Universe.

  • It was only two mop-up innings, but the Yankees were thrilled with the way Chien-Ming Wang threw the ball last night. This from Mark Feinsand of the Daily News:

"Sinkerballers are contact pitchers, rollover, ground-ball type guys," Kevin Cash said. "He got swing-and-misses on his sinker, that’s how good it was tonight,. I know everybody harps on the velocity, but the big thing is the movement. You can pitch with that kind of movement at 88-91."

Wang believes he’s ready to go back into the rotation, but with the other five starters pitching relatively well, that’s not going to happen immediately. I figure Wang will make another couple appearances out of the bullpen to prove that he’s back in form, at which time the Yankees will have some decisions to make.

"That’s as good as I’ve seen him this year," Girardi said. "That’s the Chien-Ming Wang we’ve seen so often. That’s what we want to see from him. That’s a huge building block."

  • INJURY UPDATES: Melky Cabrera will miss at least 5-7 days, and might end up on the disabled list. Brian Bruney got good news from Dr. James Andrews. No surgery, and he should be able to pitch again this season.
  • Joel Sherman agrees with me that Jorge Posada should catch less and DH more when he returns to the Yankees.
  • Here is one of those little "inside" stories I love. Great moment from Kevin Cash during last night's game.when he visited the mound to 'speak' with A.J. Burnett.

Cash

I noticed that time when he went to the mound and walked right past AJ and didn’t say a thing. I saw AJ’s confused look and I didn’t think Cash said anything too him. That’s really hilarious that he didn’t…

AJ needs to throw more strikes. Him and Joba really do have the stuff that CC has. Just CC trusts it more. CC seems to really care less about throwing the ball right over the plate. He knows no one is hitting hit.

Id love to see AJ throw that 2-seamer a lot more, it would help with the swing and misses.

Wang pitches excellent in his mop up work. I think its ok that he can’t crack the rotation just yet, cuz it means the other guys are pitching well.

Burnett

I don’t think it’s ‘trust’ with A.J. I think it’s just he has a little more trouble repeating his mechanics, so he’s a little more erratic.

I love

the smell of First Place in the morning, it’s the smell of Victory! I know it’s early and there’s lotta baseball left to be played, but first place feels pretty damned good. Also feels good to keep winning almost every series. Keep winning 2 of 3 every series and everything else will take care of itself.

Keep it in perspective. The Jays had this many wins 9 games ago. Far from over.

I'm not a Yankees fan

but I did attend the game last night with a few co-workers. The Red Sox are my team, but here’s a few things I saw last night:

-AJ pitched effective, but not efficient. He threw too many pitches, but nobody seemed to hit the ball hard.
-Wang looked great. I was not aware he was close to coming back so when I heard his name called, I thought to myself WTF, and oh crap there’s no coming back from this one.
-Kevin Cash – more productive in that game than in any game I watched last season.
-It was fun watching Damon put up an 0-fer.
-Damn it, here comes Big Tex. That first inning homerun was a thing of beauty. Frickin’ Laser.

If the Yankees keep playing like the way they are, it’s going to be a two team AL-East playoff yet again.

wow

a coherent Red SOx fan…

Its most definitely a 2 horse race. Unlike the past 2 series this season, Im really looking forward to the next one coming up.

I really want to see what happens this time, cuz its seems that teh Yanks are on top of their game while the Red Sox are middling a bit.

I was flipping back and forth with the Yanks game (ESPN2!) and the Sox game, and I would ahve to say Dice-K looks normal, aka like crap.

I really don’t know how he manages to merely let up 3 runs with all the pitchers and runners he leaves on. But I’ll give him credit, its just doesn’t seem to bite him in the ass as evidence by last season. BUt I just don’t think you can play with fire all the time like he does.

welcome back Wang !

Wang revives! Just keep moving. Sink! Sink! Sink!

What management should do is to keep Wang pitching regularly to restore his body strength and pitching rhythm. The horrible starts in the season begin is not Wang to be blamed but the Yankees management who are ignorant and careless regarding the negative influences from Wang’s injured foot.

Move on Wang! Save the Yankees as you did!

Wang

he had two relief innings that looked good, but lets not get too excited yet. he still has to prove he can do it consistently and over 6-7 innings…but he did look like his old self. things are definitely falling into place for the yanks. the rotation looks good but still inconsistent, you really never know what you’re going to get from AJ, phil and joba and they’re hitting the ball well and they still don’t have posada or nady.

Posada at 1B

Perhaps he should have gotten in some practice at first base this past off-season. Playing tremendous defensively, Tex has been pounding his body on the dirt a bunch. I would like to see him at DH once in a while.

Posada's Bat...

Plays a huge part of the Yankees’ success. But it’s good to see Sherman, Valentine, and reasonable Yankee fans realize that his future is most likely as a DH.
