What's next for Hughes

Yesterday on WFAN, Mike Francesa interviewed Girardi and a topic they discussed was where Phil Hughes would end up when Wang comes back. Hughes will start on Monday against Texas and since he has been brought up he has been getting the job done except for the bad outing against the O's. Girardi said he heard from others that Phil said he will pitch anywhere but didn't clarify where, whether it be the Minors, The bullpen, of with another organization.

Assuming Wang gets the job done for his next start, where would you place Hughes?

Id see what goes on with Joba for now

If Joba’s gonna miss a start or two, obviously Hughes stays with the big club as a starter.

Also, you see what goes on with Wang. Does he stay the same, or does he return to his ace self again?

It all really depends on Wang, and of course what Joba does coming off the injury.

If Joba and Wang are themselves for the rest of the season, then Hughes has to be sent down cuz you DON’T want him as the long man. He’s a starter so you don’t want that uncertainty.

agreed

there’s still a lot TBD re: Joba and Wang. Joba could miss a start or two, and Wang could suck again.

if they come back and pitch well, Hughes should go back to starting in AAA.

Leave him right where hes at

Hughes is a beast, Wang is Wang and I love him but hes struggled too much this year, he needs to ease his way back in. Having 6 SP’s is never bad, Hughes is going to be very good for us we just gotta let him work through this. Last year the kid went through his rough season, hes still going to have some rough starts but we need to have faith, he will come through for us and it seams like he is turning the corner.

let him stay

he will be a better starter than joba…i think. he can go deeper into games and has several good pitches. joba has fastball change up and thats pretty much it. many people wonder why we keep saying he should go to the bullpen..well he could potentially take rivera’s role as the closer some day.

joba has 4 pitches

he is 23, and the organization rates him ahead of Hughes as a starter, that’s why HE STARTED THE SEASON IN THE ROTATION AND HUGHES WAS IN AAA!

Joba will probably need to develop a 2-seamer or a sinker to get him into elite starter status cuz those are really helpful to get quick innings.

But Joba should not ever be considered Rivera’s replacement. He hasn’t shown that he is incapable as a starter yet.
