Game 41: The first inning
Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees, May 21, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Joba Chamberlain takes the hill against Adam Eaton.
Joba has had problems getting out of the first inning unscathed. Opponents OPS against him in the first inning is 1.202, higher than any other inning. Last week vs. Minnesota, Joba was made to simulate an inning in the bullpen before entering, and that seemed to help, as he retired the side on 14 pitches.
The Orioles, on the other hand, have had a knack for touching up pitchers in the opening frame (they lead the AL in first inning scoring), and they've scored six first inning runs in eight games against the the Yanks.
Despite that, the Yankees have a clear edge (on paper) in this matchup. Joba has a 3.76 ERA (in 40.2 innings) on the season, including a 2.18 ERA against the O's in 20.2 career innings.
Adam Eaton is a journey-man, back-end starter with a 7.93 ERA (in 36.1 innings) in 2009, including a 5.17 ERA in 15.2 innings against the Bombers.

HO HO HO HO!
I’ve never met a Yankee fan I’ve liked.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I was also wondering what happened to Joba
I thought he had thrown at Huff right off the bat and was ejected.

I hope he starts...
I think he has good enough stuff, pending Wang and Hughes, we may need it. Even though I’m gunning for Halladay at some point

I'm almost there
But I’ll like to see him a little bit more. Today’s a big test for him.

Gunning for Halladay?
what?
If you are talking about trading for Halladay your nuts. Not the Yankees don’t want him or don’t have the chips to trade for him (it would have to include Joba to start…), but why would teh Jays ever trade him?
I got into an argument with an idiot Met fan for this, cuz he thinks the Mets should try to solve their pitching by trading for Halladay.
He’s not getting traded. There is no reason to trade the best pitcher in baseball.
There is every reason to want Halladay, but there’s also every reason to want Albert Pujols on your team, or Chase Utley, or Zack Grienke, or ……, its just not gonna happen.

Ummmm
I think he meant Halladay is a free agent next season.

Exactly What I meant
I focus on more than just the RIGHT NOW, and was thinking down the road. Aceves can’t start this year anyway probably. How nice would that look next year
CC
Burnett
JOba
Halladay
Wang

oh...
still, I doubt Halladay leaves Toronto. Either by trade or FA. I would say they get first dibs on signing him.
So I guess I’ll say in teh future Halladay is NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
I know cost isn’t an issue for the yankees, but he’ll be 34 after that season.
Given that Halladay is one of the top 2 starters in teh league right now, he would command more than CC, probably a 3-4 yr contract worth well over 25 mil, that’s a lot of bread.
That rotation would look stick….tho if you are putting them in order, Halladay is HANDS DOWN the #1 guy over CC if that happens.

Are We
Rooting for Toronto or the Sox? My heart tells me I have to root against the Sox even if Toronto is in first place.

Ugh
In June we have 5 series against the NL. Can we please minimize this interleague garbage to 1 series a year?
