Around the Yankee Universe, 05.14.09

Here is a look around the Inter-Google at today's stories making news in the Yankee Universe.

  • The Yankees had a little fun at Brett Gardner's expense following his first career home run Wednesday night. Personally, I had more fun watching Gardner's triple. When the ball shot past Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells I was hoping Gardner would try for an inside-the-park home run. Either way, nice night for Gardner.
  • Here's an injury update on the Yankees' walking wounded. Best news in here is that Brian Bruney is getting closer to returning to the Yankee bullpen.
  • Party-pooper Joel Sherman of the New York Post had to go and point out all the things that have gone wrong for the Yankees -- and are still wrong -- after Wednesday's nice victory.
  • A young right-hander I had never heard of until this morning -- Hector Noesi -- is getting noticed after throwing 27.1 consecutive scoreless innings at Class A Charleston. That includes seven no-hit innings Wednesday night.
  • Ken Davidoff looks at Don Mattingly's probable future as a big-league manager.
  • Pete Rose says Alex Rodriguez should not be denied induction into the Hall of Fame when that time comes. So, umm, Pete even if we agree why should we care what you think?

Nice Win

That was a really nice win last night. But, darn it, we need to put a streak together. A long streak. Maybe it will start tonight with CC!

Winning series

To be consistent teams need to win series. A win tonight means two series victories in a row over AL East teams — which is a good start on the road to recovery for this team.

re Pete Rose

Exactly right in your comment. ARod’s got enough troubles without Tainted Rose flakking for him.

Johnny Damon

He leads the team in home runs. That’s either good or bad. I would think about moving him into the 3 spot and moving Texeira down. I don’t know I could be way off base here but to me it just seems like a real possibitly right now.

I would have agreed a week ago

But Teixeira seems to be coming out of his slump. And with Alex back now, it probably makes sense not to tinker too much with the lineup and let everyone get settled into what should be their spot for the rest of the season. But if Teixeira doesn’t start hitting, and Damon is still leading the team in HRs in a couple of weeks, maybe they should tweak thinks.

Sherman's column

I think I agree with his criticism of the new park, though I haven’t been there in person (that will change next Thursday though).

The rest of the column is just filler though. I know it’s silly to complain about NY media filling space in their papers or online with nonsense, but sometimes it’s hard to resist the urge.

It’s early/mid May and the Yanks are 5.5 games out while playing with about half of their expected roster healthy at any given time…that they aren’t 12 games out is an accomplishment. Considering who has been injured (ARod, Wang, Posada) it’s little surprise.

Tex, CC and AJ have been disappointing – but evaluating players after a month and a half is idiotic, the baseball season is 162 games long for a reason.

Honestly, the biggest concern of mine is the bullpen. Seems all we have out there is Coke, Bruney (when he returns) and Mo.

The part of Sherman’s column that drives me insane is the whole bit about the team looking like they lack a mental toughness. When a team wins a lot, they look good and mentally tough. When they lose a lot, or even just more than expected, they look bad and lazy, lethargic and mentally weak. He obviously can’t think of anything better to write.
