A-Rod Accused of Pitch-Tipping

I first about this story of Selena Roberts claiming that A-Rod tipped off opposing batters to pitches in her upcoming book A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez on Mike Francesa's show today on YES. Personally, I think this is pretty crazy. But like Mike said today on his show, a lot more research has to be done and it's too early to start making any accusations.

What do you guys think?

We’re talking about the guy who yelled “i got it!” (….or was it “ha”…?)

We’re also talking about an admitted cheater.

So I wouldnt say its crazy, but, we’re going to have see who those sources are. They must be other players.

I don't get it. Why would a pitcher help him out (and screw

up his own numbers in the process) just because he tipped off one of their hitters? I’m not saying it isn’t true, just that it seems like a stupid thing to do.

by garp on Apr 30, 2009 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

if i understand correctly…the pitchers arent involved, its just an infielder doing another infielder a favor for a favor in return in another game.

by spinz on May 1, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

If that is the case then he should just come out and

deny it. I doubt any players will come out and contradict him since they would be outing themselves as cheaters as well. Ball players don’t like to confess things unless they absolutely have to.

traces

According to his manager, Showalter, and pitching coach, Orel Hershiser, when Alex was with the Rangers he would try to signal the catcher pitch selections since the pitching was so horrendous. He wasn’t very good at it and was asked to stop or change his methods. Cal Ripken, Jr. did the same thing. Also, the middle infielders will single the pitch to 1st base and 3rd base so they know where to play in the field. Neither of them hold any credence with him doing it for anything in return. It was just Alex trying to help others — though not too well. This writer must have a thing against rich men. I think this personal attack on an athlete is way over the line — maybe after his playing career is over, but this is going to make her a laughing stock. When the little guy from Mike and Mike said he grew 3 inches and gained 18 pounds over one summer, it certainly is within reason for someone to grow a couple of inches and gain 25 pounds over a couple of years in high school. What a witchhunt. I have a suggestion. Maybe someone should write a tell-all book about Selena Roberts. See how she would like her dirty laundry publicized — though don’t know too many who would care.

re trade

I like it. Get younger and less of an ego.

that trade is stupid and would never happen and garze would not be able to handle new york. I dont get how yankee fans can hate on a-rod. he is a yankee and will be for a long epriod of time. why not back him up and support him instead of turning your bac

That trade is stupid and would never be done. Garze would not be able to handle the New York media. I also do not understand how Yankee fans can hate on A-Rod. He is a Yankee and will be for years to come, why not support him instead of being like the rest of baseball and attack him? He was not the only one on that list, jsut the only name released, baseball is going through a rough patch of time with steroids, but his name was released because hes a superstar. It over now, he said he was sorry for the things he has done in his grim past, now move on. There is no proof that he took steroids in high school or even with the Yankees. And if so do you really think he is the only peon to have done that? Same with pitch tipping. There is no evidence and I am sure when any player is strugglnig theyll try and get out of it,a nd I do not think that A-Rod would do that. He has won an MVP with us and has carried us on his back through the rough parts of the season. Become a real Yankee fan and stand by A-Rod.

Without a shout of a doubt I agree ...

But He is a hugely talented player just lacks a brain. As Melkan said though we are stuck with the guy so embrace him or not he is with us for 8 or 9 more years so why not show some support …

by I Bleed Pinstripes on May 1, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I will embrace him

When he starts hitting meaningful homeruns. When he stops looking nervous when he is at the plate with RISP and 2 outs and whiffs on 3 bad pitches. He IS the most gifted Yankee I have ever seen play. But that said, the Armani baggage that goes with this guy keeps getting heavier and heavier. He is a douche and if he wasn’t a Yankee I would be happy watching all the self imposed turmoil he is going through. Now of course if he IS caught tipping pitches, they are gonna throw him out.

my trade proposal

garza can handle big games and he’s young and will be a good replacement for pettitte. longoria will add youth and will only get better. a-rod hit like .100 with risp in the 9th inning last season and he is just a lying douche. i will never respect him as a person, but as a player he was consistently mediocre in the clutch last year…at one point i half-joked that i would rather have molina in the big spot than a-rod in the 9th (his numbers were better). we send toxic a-rod for young guys that remind me of swisher…wins all around

Ok

So explain to me why on Earth would Tampa trade Longoria-Garza for A-Rod.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on May 1, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Same reason the Jets traded up for Sanchez ...

Put asses in the seats .. but yea that trade is beyond unrealistic .. but you never know .. who thought Cutler would be off Denver after a pro bowl year .. sorry to bring up another sport just saying

by I Bleed Pinstripes on May 1, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes

People baffle me. Longoria has a 9yr contract worth 44 mil. Which is about 5 mil a season. Garza is in a walk year, and maybe in this climate may get 7-8 mil a year? So in what universe would the Rays take a 34 year old 3B making 20+ million a year to replace a 23 year old 3B stud making 5 million a year PLUS one of their best pitchers to a division rival? Basically anyone with an IQ over 40 would consider this the dumbest trade since Babe Ruth.

WOW!!!!!!

A-Rod is accused of pitch tipping. MAYBE IF SELENA ROBETS ACTUALLY PAYED ATTENTION TO ONE FRICKIN MLB GAME SHE’D NOTICE THAT EVERY SINGLE MLB PLAYER WOULD DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on May 1, 2009 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

Are you suggesting that pitch tipping is a common occurrence among MLB?

by Charger567 on May 3, 2009 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I didn't hear exactly how he was doing it

I initially thought they accused him of stuff like, being on 2nd and telling the batter at the plate what was coming. I think stuff like this is pretty common,

But she accuses him of telling the OTHER team apparently what the pitcher on the Yankees is throwing, so that they are lenient on him when he gets to the plate. I have no idea how the hell he would do this, but if THIS is true, then A-Rod should be banned.

by FreeBradshaw on May 4, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

he never has played second or SS for yankees

Maybe when he was with Texas.. A friend of mine told me that Arod was helping the catcher because the catcher was new with texas but according to him this game was televised and the commentators said the same thing. This was taken by Roberts and used against him.. We cant trust Roberts she is just trying to sell books…. she made a mediocre case against the Duke lacrosse players.. SHE CAN NOT be trusted… as yankees fans we need support our guy..

by YANK77 on May 4, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

part of the stipulation

could be that the yankees pay a chunk of a-rod’s contract
