Around SBN: The Week In Worst: When Baseball Goes Wrong

Open thread

Since tonight's game is rained out, feel free to discuss any topics in this thread. A lot of issues to discuss in Yankee-land:

- Wang's next start will be skipped. He will instead pitch a simulated game on Thursday (an off day). That sets up Burnett to start Friday in Boston.

UPDATE 11:30 p.m.: Joba is now scheduled to start Friday's game.

- The offense friendliness of the new ballpark. Is the seating structure the problem? (h/t to PA)

- Instant replay/video review in MLB.

- Can anyone in the pen be trusted outside of Bruney and Mo?

- Baltimore laid down as Boston swept them four straight.

- And there's always A-Rod.

Offensive explosion is too early to call

There’s been 4 regular season games and 2 preseason games played in the new stadium and I’m already hearing comparisons to citizens park etc. I think this is premature and we should at least give the yanks 40 games in their new digs before we make any judgments. Also, the Indians absolutely killed our pitching averaging 10 runs/game so this certainly can’t continue….. Center field is actually a little deeper than the old stadium according to hitracker and right field is a little shorter so HR’s should even out.
anyone else have an opinion either way?.

A-Rod

Question: Brett Myers beats up his wife no comment from ESPN or the Commisioner about how bad or disgraceful to the game that is, Tony LaRussa gets DUI again no one has a problem with that, Steve Phillips gets sued for sexual harrassment while stil GM of the Mets, Roy Oswalt has no problems with Andy Pettite and Roger Clemens using steroids while they helped Houston get to the World Series. Alex takes off his shirt in Central Park like 3 million other people do, dates outside his marriage like 70% of the country does, is in the gossip columns like Jeter always is for who he is dating. So tell me again how A-Rod is such a disgrace to baseball. Never arrested doesn’t beat his wife cheated like a whole lot of other guys did, didn’t help us win a world series like a whole lot of other guys didn’t.

About A-Rod

I agree with the previous poster (ae2cdk) regarding the attention given to A-Rod, the media simply maintains the focus on him because it sells. As you mentioned, A-Rod takes off his shirt in Central Park, there is a media storm. Yuri Sucart picks Alex up in Tampa, another media frenzy. Alex’s wife wears an “offensive” t-shirt to the Stadium and the media has something to say about that. Where was all of this media attention and outrage when Jim Leyritz was convicted of DUI manslaughter? How about Julio Lugo?

While we’re on the subject, where were all of these animal rights activists at when Randy Johnson killed a bird while on the mound?

What about Ugueth Urbina

and his Machete adventures?

It has a whole lot to do with jealousy. A-Rod ’s gonna make over $500 million in his baseball career. Anything he does and people point to how much he makes.

Brett Myers beat his wife? Well……A-Rod makes a lot of money and has no WS rings…Yea, F A-Rod.

and seriously can every sports caster shut up about the marlins already?

there are 11-2 … and played the nationals 6 times already … what i wouldnt give to swap any team in our division for the nationals….

also … almost every team in the league has a 7-5 or 7-6 average right now … so how the makes the yanks falling apart at this point i will never know.

you can draw a lot of silly conclusions...

from tiny sample sizes.

for example, Cody Ransom hit .302/.400/.651 last season. ’nuff said.

I wouldn’t go declaring the new stadium a bandbox yet. I suspect wretched pitching has a lot to do with the high HR totals.

What is your problem, ae2cdk ?

Does 70% of the population cheat on their spouses? Not that I have heard. The issues of which you speak are all public record and maybe what happens in the home is NOT the subject of sports talk, but maybe ‘Ellen’ (who watches her anyway?) or Dr. Phil. I am there to be entertained, like trying to watch the Yankees try and actually win a game, not hear someone airing their dirty laundry. Does violence in the home happen? Sure it does, and if I wanted to watch it or read it, I would turn on the appropriate sources. If what these animals do in their home bothers you, then start a letter writing campaign to do something about it, like get these clowns fired. What will you say next—that it takes too much effort or that “You don’t want to get involved?” Then don’t complain as to why this stuff continues to happen. Now, shut up and watch the Yankees NOT make the playoffs AGAIN.

Hey Billy

At least the real Billy Martin was an awesome douche. You are just kind of a normal one.

A-Rod

i thought this was anopen thread to discuss the Yankees and Baseball. i didn’t know that you were the arbiter of what is appropriate in this blog. BTW I was asking a question and last i heard ballplayers were not animals. My point in case you missed it in your skimming of my post is that I would like to know why Alex is constantly criticized for things that in comparison to what else is going on in Baseball and in sports are extremely miniscule. I don’t expect the Yankees to win every year, I appreciate when they do because i remember when they NEVER won. When Rudy May was their best pitcher and chicken stanley was their best shortstop. So whether they win or not i will support my team.

Suspensions are a joke

Does anyone have a comment about the suspension that was handed out to Josh Beckett? He had his six game suspension reduced to five and will not have to miss a start. Pitcher suspensions are a joke, if it were an everyday player he would have to sit for five games. A starting pitcher should at least have to miss one start or a reliever one save opportunity.

yeah, well beckett didnt actualy hit anyone with that pitch. Nor did the umpires find a reason to throw him out of the game. So the suspension was pretty much a joke anyway.
