Game 12: Cleveland at New York
Cleveland Indians at New York Yankees, Apr 18, 2009 3:40 PM EDT
After a heart-racing win nailed down in classic fashion, the Yanks follow up with the question mark of the young season, Chien-Ming Wang. He's pitched 4.2 innings on the young season.
The Indians' sinkerballer Fausto Carmona has only been slightly less lost, giving up 10 runs in 10 innings on 12 hits and 6 walks.
The Stadium has also surrendered 17 homers in 36 innings (counting the Cubs games). Maybe today will be the day the ball stays in the yard.

Cannot stand this guy
one of the biggest Yankees hater…how many times he gonna mention that Tex’s HR was off the end of the bat
Hows Wang looks
My damn LCD tv went out and the repair guy can’t make it til monday. Can’t really tell by the online play by play. 2 in air usually isn’t good.

here we go
2 on no outs and 3-1 count

Geeez
Is there a reason he is only topping out at 90? He used to hit 94-96
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions
Not good
He keeps getting fouled off. His sinker STILL doesn’t sink and his FB is topping out at 90mph. With that stuff you are gonna get CREEEEAMED.

Worried
Not worried about his Sinker, that will come along. I am worried about his velocity.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions
Ummmm
Well yeah, Buck is a moron. With his 94-96 mph speed he has two 19 game winning seasons under his belt and went 8-2 last season. The reason he needs to keep his velocity is so when he throws a 96 mph heater its hard to hit, when he throws a low 90’s sinker the difference from his heater make it even harder.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:15 PM EDT reply actions
I love Wang, I truly do.
But he needs to go down to AAA for a few weeks and get that Velocity up and the sinker down. Bring up Hughes for a couple starts to help get Wang’s mind and body right.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions
DAMNIT
All his pitches are 90mph. That ain’t gonna work for him. You throw a 90mph anything and big league hitters are gonna knock it around. His strength was mid 90s fastball to throw the timing off his sinkers.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions
Poor guy
I feel for him. They need to send him down. Build up his confidence. We can’t give up 5-6 runs every start of his. Get Hughes up to take 2 -3 starts.

Pull them NOW. Wang & Posada
If they kept ERA for catchers Posada would be one of the worst in the league. Inadequate game calling, pass balls, and poor framing of the pitch costs our staff big time.
Who is worse
Joe Morgan? Joe Buck? Or Tim Macarver? I hate them all uniquely.

This is a JOKE
strong pitching staff my ass, 122 pitches in 5innings for CC, Wang has an ERA over 30.00, Joba throws way too many pitches on general if it wasn’t for AJ and Pettitte who are our 3rd and 4th starters repectively where would we be?

I'd tell you to leave it alone and give it time...
but that’s what people have been telling you both here and at Over The Monster since the season began. You can either appreciate that it’s a 162-game season or you can freak out about it like you have been, but you’re going to spend a lot more time being upset if you go with the latter.
way to go joe
How ignorant is Yankee skipper. Your pitcher is awful and you wait till 7 runs to get someone up. This is not slow pitch.
I know what is wrong with this guy.

Poor Wang
Feel bad for the guy. He’s given a lot in the past couple of seasons, but he’s been godawful this year. What’s mind numbing is how he used to be a Cy Young contender and now he’s fallen off the wagon. Must be that injury from last year.
It's true what they say...Even the NFL's Big Wigs hate the Steelers. On the plus side, I can now tell my future grand kids about Hines Ward and how the NFL made rules because of him. Roger Goodell, you make me sick.

this will put yanks back on TV
We do not get Yankees on TV here and now they stink it up on national feed. Will be back to yahoo trying to find out scores.
Too bad...
…we couldn’t have the yankee pitcher throw a brush back pitch right between Buck & McCarver in the press box. That might change their tune.

Think positive
Better to get all these kinks out NOW in April as opposed to October. We need Wang, we need him to get mentally right. If he can no longer throw in the mid 90’s I think he is done. Sinkerball is a touch pitch, if you don’t have you good sinker working and only have a 90mph fastball as your backup you are in serious trouble.

DL doesn't make any sense,
the guy needs to pitch. Send him down for a few starts, bring up Hughes and go from there.
Wang has been with the Yanks for too long to deserve getting "traded’ or whatever the hell some of you “fans” want.
The guy is an ace, he has proved that before. Kinda like Lee on the Indians, the guy has some issues with his mechanics. This is not the real CMW, and fan that actually has watched the Yankees and Wang pitch before this year knows that.

The Yankees
They need to figure away to fill those thousand dollar seats up. It is ashame and turns me off a little from the organization that you charge so much for tickets and then on a Sat game have empty seats.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions
As sad as it is
their pride is too high to all of a sudden lower ticket prices, i mean this is a team that hired a real estate agent to sell luxury boxes instead of lowering prices for them

Between a rock and a hard place
Kind of hard to tell the fans that already bought the over priced tickets that everyone else after you now gets a rebate.

they could suck it up and refund some of them
I’m a Mets fan and Citi Field is having the same problem. I also live in DC and Nats Stadium had that problem all last year and so far this year (of course, the Nats have trouble selling ANY seats, so not sure if they count). It just looks awful to watch a game on TV and see all the seats behind the plate empty – if I were running the team I’d at the very least have some kind of contest and move some people down from the upper decks into the unoccupied seats for nationally televised games.
What they need is to be like Priceline
For all the tickets that the Team has not sold they need to auction them off game day so regular folks can get a chance to get a decent seat. For executive packages there needs to be a penalty for tickets not used so that way it would at least force these ticket holders to give them away or sell them for games they cant make.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions
I think we need...
Molina behind the plate. He can handle these young pitchers and he calls a great game. Posada’s ERA just went up as well. As far as seating I agree. I was at the stadium yesterday and 10,000 empty high priced seats.
What the joke is,
is that the Yankees continue to say that they didn’t sell the standing room and those seats are technically sold. Better believe most people out there if they had box seats to the game they going. Well we must consider all the fans that were late and then pulled in the parking lot losing 9-2 said screw this and went home.

At least I get to see CC for my game next tuesday, then again he been so-so.

Reality
Even if the Yanks lose (duh) and the Sox win we still have a game on them. Let’s not panic yet. 4 out of 5 pitchers are either doing well or good enough. Wang obviously is not ready, he needs some time in AAA and someone to really work on his mechanics and confidence. Plus it would be great to see Hughes up for a few weeks and get his confidence up. If we pay .500 ball in April I will be thrilled considering losing A-Rod and getting the new guys butterflies out of their stomachs.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 4:59 PM EDT reply actions
I don't agree with Tim mcCarver he doesn't understand Yankee History
People don’t realize that Posada was the back-up catcher on the Yankees 4 time world championship teams. With the exception of the last world series that they won. But that team didn’t quit and beat teams 7-5,11-9, etc. That team gave up a lot of runs.
Since then great pitchers have come through NY and couldn’t seem to get it right here. The common denominator in these failings was Posada.
I don't care
If Johnny Bench was catching. Anybody would have shelled Wang with his Sinker location and 90mph heater.

A die hard Yankees fan
But I am a bit sad that these days a regular Joe has to spend 60-90 bucks a game to get an ok seat. I am flying home to catch a couple games with old friends and we are looking at 80 buck seats for what is a mediocre seat. You have these millionaires and corporations buying these boxes and no one is sitting in these seats? I think the Yankees really need to tell these ticket holders, for every game none of your tickets are used we are charging you a use fee. I bet those seats would magically get filled.
by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Apr 18, 2009 5:05 PM EDT reply actions
Good idea Happy...
You know that the bleachers, standing room and 2nd and 3rd tiers were full yesterday. The empty seats were the expensive ones. Also the last two field blocks of seats down each baseline were empty. That tells me that people were paying for the outer tickets before they would pay crazy prices for the prime seats. The Yankees really need to address this for the fans.
What can they do?
Well it seems to me Molina calls a better game, period. BUT you can’t have a lineup that has Molina, Ransom and Gardner batting 7,8,9. But when A-Rod comes back you can at least have Posada DH more and have Molina catch more. Actually when there is a Left handed starter Molina should always start. He is terrible against RHP but decent against LHP. Sit Matsui out since he is a lefty and have Posada bat DH. Matsui is gonna have to prove he can DH, watching him swing has been painful, he is way out in front. He needs to get his knees right and platoon DH with Posada. Posada needs to be backup catcher next season and full time DH and Matsui as much as I love him has to go.

Who cares
Since when was there ever the notion of a 7th inning guy? What is there gonna be a 6th inning guy in a few years when a quality start is 5 innings pitched and 4 earned runs? Hell I am not sure I believe in the philosophy of a setup man unless you have two closers. You don’t really need a “seventh inning man” when your “first inning man” helps post the most runs the New York Yankees ever gave up in a single inning in the franchises history. Basically there should be starters, a long reliever, a mess of guys that can mop, and a closer. The idea of a single 7th and 8th inning man is dumb. You throw in relievers who are good at certain things. Big Papi is up in the 7th with 2 out and runners on the corner, do you send in your Right handed “seventh inning man” who has Papi hits .580 against or your lefty whose era is 5.00 but who seems to have Papi’s number? We are trying to make the game much more regimented than it should be. I never heard of a setup man till Mo and Wetland. Now there is ANOTHER title?

If this continues, fans...
will be calling for Girardi’s job.
What about Acevados? He pitched well for us last year.
Wang
He has had the 3 worst consecutive starts I have EVER seen in my life. Does anyone know if there has been worse??? What a nightmare!!! He can’t make another start untill he goes to AAA to work things out!
I don't get it
It is very simple, since Wang has an era approaching the price of a bleacher ticket, you need to give him a VERY short rope this game. The second he gave up 4 he should have been pulled. All you are doing by leaving him in is destroying his confidence further and making the hole unclimbable. Wang needs to go take a shower, go to the kitchen and get a snack for his ride down to Trenton.

Luckily
The Sox are playing subpar too. Listen, in August and Sept this will all be a silly memory. I have faith Wang will get back to decent form sometime this season. Worse case scenario, Hughes comes up for awhile. Our pen has been over worked, CC will settle, AJ seems to fit in fine, Andy is Andy and Joba’s pitching ok, he needs to just recapture that pinpoint control and all will be ok. We don’t need any miracle seasons from anyone which is the strength of such a good lineup and rotation. On the bright notes, Swisher is more than capable of taking Nady’s spot, Cano seems to be back on track and 08 was a blip. The things that make me nervous is Matsui’s knees and Damon’s inability to track balls in LF. We basically have a bunch of CFers.

20-2
The most humiliating loss in ages and we aren’t even outta the 5th. Luckily the only people left watching are the people that refuse to walk out after paying 90 bucks for bleacher seats. Most of the people that own those million dollar boxes probably didn’t even know there was a game going on and probably think Chien Ming Wang is some sorta Pacific Rim hedge fund.

Worse than last year???
Im almost starting to think this team might be worse than last years team??? 4 blowout loses in the frist 2 weeks of the season and we already had to use or right fielder to pitch!! It may be early but this team is looking very subpar, again!! And like last year they can’t score with RISP!!
Can't see the game
I’m in Chicago so I get the Cubs. Maybe that’s a good thing today. Anyway, I am amazed that the Yanks of the last 6 years have been a great tonic for struggling and rookie pitchers. Can someone tell me what Yanks look like at the plate? Seems like another year where if we don’t get home runs, we won’t get the win.
He may be hurt
ESPNEWS is saying that they wouldn’t be surprised if Wang ends up on the DL before his next scheduled start. Enter Phil Hughes. And there still is the issue with the bullpin. Is it just me, or is being a yankee fan very stressful at times?

Wang
Chien-Ming Wang is a one-trick pony as a pitcher, and if the trick doesn’t work? Joe G. does not seem to get it
Looks like I picked
the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. CMW has managed to progress from bad to worse to utterly pathetic in his three starts. Something is obviously wrong here but from what I understand, CMW can not be sent down to Scranton (IMO the logical choice) because Wang hasn’t been in the majors long enough and doesn’t have any options. So it sounds like a timely visit to the DL is in order and Hughes needs to get the callup. I can’t believe Eiland stated that Wang actually threw the ball better today. I’m not giving up on CMW, I’ve watched him for a few seasons and I know he hasn’t forgotten how to pitch. I’d just don’t want to see his confidence affected by these starts.

Laughing stock
The Yankees right now are the laughing stock of Baseball. If I was a Sox fan I would be delighted. The highest payroll in baseball and we have a game like this. Nothing seems to be going right other than Mo, Swisher and Cano. We have the most expensive Stadium ever and we can’t fill the damn thing. The Yankees need to dig deep and decide what kind of team they are.
