Game Recap: Yanks win, finally head home
A quick 'Kudos and Wet Willies' style review of today's impressive 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Kudos to ..
- Andy Pettitte: A tremendous effort from the veteran lefty, working 7.1 efficient innings. Pettitte looks primed for a good year.
- Derek Jeter: His game-winning 9th inning single was the second straight day the Captain has come up with a huge 9th inning hit. Tuesday it was a game-clinching three-run home run. By the way, has anyone else noticed that Jeter is driving the ball better through the first nine games this season than he did last year?
- Brian Bruney: This guy is just blowing people away right now. He has struck out the last five hitters he has faced. Wow!
- Robinson Cano: Continued scorching the ball with a double and a two-run home run. Right now he looks like the star the Yankees thought he would become when they signed him to the big contract before last season.
- Cody Ransom: The struggling infielder came up with a huge 9th inning hit and hustled it into a double, setting up Jeter's game-winning hit. Good for him.
Wet Willies to ...
- Mark Teixeira: An 0-for-4 day with three strikeouts for Tex. He did turn a brilliant double play throwing out Gabe Kapler trying to advance to third base on a ground out, though.
- Troy Percival: If you didn't understand this already, Wednesday made it clear. When it comes to the 9th inning the Yankees (and the Red Sox) have a HUGE advantage on the Rays.

After the Wang debacle
it’s nice we won the series and now head home. I think there is no debate as to who should be setting up Mo. Bruney, again, was very efficient tossing eight pitches while K’ing two.
Question: Are opposing teams going to continue to employ the right side defensive shift on Tex when he bats from the left side? I hope it doesn’t become a repeat of Giambi’s stubborn refusal to sacrifice power and hit the opposite way.
Can’t seem to find a spray chart on Tex.
yes, i wanted to make a special point
regarding Tex’s throw to 3b. that was a play Giambi c/would NEVER make. it’s just nice to finally have a plus defensive 1b-man (who can also hit).
why did Maddon take Sonnanstine out so early?
not having Nady almost cost us. we had to have Molina hit for himself in the 7th, runner on, down by one, bc we didn’t have any pinch-hitters.
the bottom third of the lineup (Gardner, Pena/Ransom, Molina) is extremely weak. the addition of Arod will be a huge boost.
Tex's play
I thought about it this morning. I gave ‘Tex’ a Wet Willie, but the Yankees do not win yesterday without that play. A perfect illustration of how plus defense changes games.

Kudos & Wet Willies
I do them over at Big Blue View to review Giants games. Gotta have a trademark of some sort, though I’m not sure being known as the blogger who hands out ‘Wet Willies’ is a good thing. LOL!!
