Thinking about Catchers

With Alex Rodriquez possibly missing 4 months of the season, they Yankees need all the Offense they can get. Jorge Posada isnt a lock to regain his 07 form. The Yankees cant afford to losse both Arod and Posada.

The Clevland Indians have 2 starter worthy catchers, Victor Martinez and Kelly Shoppach. Their top prospect is catcher Carlos Santana. I would think they are looking to get rid of either V-Mart or Kelly. What would the Yankees have to give up in order to get one of these guys?

Regarding contracts, lets assume the Yankees trade for Kelly Shoppach. I believe he just signed a 2 yr deal. So after the 09 season, we would allow Jose Molina to leave and keep Poasada and Kelly. Soon after that we would hope our catcher prospects would be ready to take over the job.

We could trade Nady+ a prospect for Kelly.

Just an idea i wanted to share.

our farm is filled with catchers.

no need for more. Most notably, Jesus Montero, 19 years old A++ power hitter, ranked as our number 2 prospect, second only to Ajax. Though he does need to improve his fielding, Montero within a year, maybe two could be a star player. Interesting thoughts though.

That’s my fault, but here’s hoping that we won’t have to replace Posada.

Montero ...

I just returned from Tampa where I watched the Yankees beat the Tigers and fall to the Braves. Montero pinch-hit late in the Tigers’ game and rocked a shot off the left-field wall for a double. Though I didn’t get to see much of him, his swing certainly impressed me. The following day, I arrived at the complex in time to watch the catchers work. Montero is big—really big. But he also appears very light on his feet. He moves very well side to side and appears to have quick hands.

I don’t know if the kid can call a decent game, but he’s got the tools to be a solid player on the MLB scene sooner than later. I don’t know that we need to go out and land another catching prospect. Prior to seeing Montero I might have agreed. But not now. I think Molina, Posada, Montero, Cervelli and even Piliterre can hold the fort down.

Catching

is the most valuable position in the game.
Stoppach is the real deal, but the Indians have been transitioning Martinez toward 1B. I don’t see the Indians parting with either until free agency.

oh

i figured first base was taken up by Ryan Garko, and DH by Travis Hafner. If Travis Hafner doesnt regain his all star form this yr, the Indians will be forced to look for other options, and their tight payroll makes that harder, so maybe they unload Kelly for Nady/Swisher.(cuz they need the hitting) but then agian they have a crowded OF.

once agian, just throwing stuff out there.

Really? Are you sure? Maybe you should double-check your stats.

Projections

Baseballmusings.com is running a series on the Marcels offensive projection estimates for 2009 (they haven’t posted the Yankees yet)

“The series on team offense continues with the Cleveland Indians. I plug the probable lineup from CBSSportsLine into the Lineup Analysis Tool, and fill in the numbers with Marcel the Monkey projections. The results:”
· Best lineup: 5.55 runs per game
· Probable lineup: 5.49 runs per game
· Worst lineup: 5.34 runs per game
· Regressed lineup: 4.95 runs per game

Other teams 2009 estimates in the Musings series based on probable line-ups:

Red Sox 5.57
Indians 5.49
White Sox 5.17
Cubs 5.15
Rangers 5.13
Tigers 5.08
Twins 5.05
Mets 4.72

I’m not sure that your contention that the Indians need help offensively in ’09 holds any water. Martinez is back from injury and we’ll see what Hafner brings this year.

If the Yankees need offense...

Lets hope that their veterans start hitting again and get back to their 2007 form. If the Yankees need a major league ready player at catcher, why not trade Nady for Max Rameriz. he’s a able player, and I project that he can hit 15-20 homers and bat around .260-275 with solid defense. Also, Jesus montero is almost major league ready, and I think that the yankees shouldn’t wait for A-Rod to get better, so try and trade for someone like Crede to fill the hole for 4 months, it can’t hurt. Another fill-in at third base could probably be Josh Fields if the Sox start Dayan Viciedo instead of Fields.

Montero is 19 years old, has a total of 600 professional ABs and has never played AA.
He is a million miles from MLB ready.

Trades

Max Ramirez at catcher is highly suspect defensively. More than likely his future is as a 1B/DH. But Montero also fits pretty much the same profile.

Crede was signed as a free agent and can’t be traded yet.

cathers

i say trade posada for victor martinez and keep all of our prospects. posada is going downhill fast. trade him while you can still get value for him

Okay

…and then the Indians can send Dave Dellucci and Josh Barfield to NY for Robinson Cano and Philip Hughes to even out the Posada for Martinez exchange. I’m hoping the above post was a joke.

Exactly what I was thinking… alot of Yankees fans think its their god-given right to rob other teams in trades.
As if a mid market team like Cleveland with one of the best front offices in baseball would trade Martinez for Posada…the arrognace of suggesting that(Unless it was a joke)is unbelievable…it would take Hughes or Kennedy and Coke to get Martinez…maybe more to get Shoppach…maybe Cano would get it done but NY seems reluctant(And who blames them)to get rid.
Teagarden may be more availible now Saltys been tearing it up but again it would cost at least Hughes…considering they wanted Bucholz from Boston.
