Kevin Long, the Yankees’ hitting coach, said he knew Rodriguez had a hip problem last June or July. Long noticed subtle changes in Rodriguez’s hitting, notably in his right foot, the back one in his stance.
The foot was not pivoting fully, Long said, and as a result, Rodriguez could not fully turn his waist and clear his hips. This caused his bat to drag and prevented him from driving through the ball and generating maximum power.
That explains the power outage, but why wasn't he examined last season?
Was he examined and they thought it would heal with rest and rehab? Surgery would have kept him out of the WBC, which is what the Yanks wanted anyway.
Did they not actually notice, and so they're now lying to try minimizing the crisis?
Something doesn't add up.

they waited until NOW to do something about it?! he could’ve had the surgery in October and been ready by February.
players should have physicals after every season to determine if any issues can be solved in the four month hiatus. this could now linger for the entire year.

Secret Suspension rumors abound
ala the Jordan rumors that his baseball years were a ruse to cover the punishment by Stern for his gambling.
The timing of the cyst announcement, coming right after the meeting with Selig, will certainly throw gasoline on the conspiracy theorist’s fire.
Maybe all parties agreed that some time away wouldn’t be so bad, and that the preexisting cyst problem was the perfect cover.
Otherwise we can only surmise that the Yanks are grossly incompetent when it comes to the health of their players.

Nice conspiracy theory, but I don’t think so. In this day and age of hyper-media coverage, I really don’t think something like you suggest could happen without a leak, or and “un-named source close to the negotiations” popping up.

Not a chance
Too many people would have to be involved in this so-called cover up and the odds of all of those people keeping their mouths shut is ZERO.
The person who disclosed A-Rod’s drug test risked serious jail time for divulging his sealed results and the person did it anyways.
Never been a big believer in conspiracy theories, so I’m not going to start here.
