Around the Yankee Universe, 03.30.09

Here is a look around the vast New York Yankee Universe on a rainy Monday here in the Northeast.

  • NorthJersey.com has an overview both the new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, new home of the New York Mets. By the way, does it annoy anyone else that there are whispers that Citi Field is a nicer stadium than the new home of the Yankees? Here are a couple of cool videos from Citi Field.
  • We know Brett Gardner will be in center field Opening Day (hooray!). We don't know who the 12th reliever or backup infielder will be. It seems Ramiro Pena has a good chance at the backup infield job, though. By the way, both Peter Abraham and the folks at YankeesRedSox.com think it will be a mistake if the Yankees don't carry a true long reliever.
  • The New York Daily News says the Yankees need big seasons from Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui.
  • A.J. Burnett is not concerned about Sunday's rough outing.

I find it hard to believe that Shitty Field could be nicer than New Yankee Stadium. But from early reviews it sounds like they did a good job over there in Queens.

It makes sense that people would say CitiField would be nicer than the new Yankee Stadium because it’s so much different than the stadium it is replacing.

If you’ve been going to Shea for 30 years, then walk into CitiField, it obviously feels like a huge upgrade as a fan. The new Yankee Stadium was built to feel like the stadium it is replacing, and thus from a fan perspective it’s not going to be as striking of a change.

The simple explanation: the Mets needed a change from the craphole they were playing in. The Yankees didn’t.

good point rsjem23

maybe a case where people will seem to prefer Citi at first, but Yankee stadium will have longer staying power

No SP's

I don’t think you’ll fare well in your league with only John Lackey anchoring your staff. He’s not even ready for Opening Day.
