Mark Melancon, IPK, Jesus Montero, Christian Garcia, and Kevin Russo are all going down to minor-league camp.
Garcia, Russo and Montero never really had a shot to make the team, so no surprise there.
7 earned runs in 10.2 IP bought IPK's ticket.
I'm a little surprised about Melancon, not because they sent him down, but to do it right after he got roughed up. Not exactly the way to build confidence. But maybe he knew it was coming, or maybe they think it's what he needs.

DH next year?
Maybe next year they can use Jesus Montero as the regular DH and also the backup for Posada. They would have to carry 3 catchers then, but then you could use Montero’s his bat while slowly bringing him along as catcher.

Montero is likely two years away
He’s never played a game above Charleston (Low-A) and will start the 2009 season in Tampa (High-A).
His bat has never been an issue. This guy is going to be a beast with the stick. But he still needs to learn the fundamentals of catching because he’s very raw although getting better.
Even if he tears up the Florida League this season (and he’s quite capable of doing just that) – he still needs to improve significantly on his game calling and defense.
He’s certainly got the tools, but it’s going to take time to teach him how to be a major league catcher.
