New Blog: The Boxing Bulletin for Boxing Fans!

Hello to new friends ... and, I hope, some old ones

While we all wait for what Mike Lupica of the NY Daily News is calling "The A-Roid Show" this afternoon I wanted to take a minute to say hello.

If you hadn't noticed there is a new name listed among the Pinstripe Alley writers shown at the bottom of the front page. That's me.

If you recognize the moniker that's because I have been lead blogger over at Big Blue View, SBN 's New York Giants blog, for the past couple of seasons.

Some of you may also know that I have been writing about the Yankees for Bugs and Cranks, a fine baseball blog. I am thrilled to be bringing my Yankee thoughts here to Pinstripe Alley.

Hopefully, some of my friends from both Big Blue View and Bugs and Cranks will follow me here. And, hopefully, some of you will visit us at BBV -- if you don't do that already.

I am looking forward to it.

To get started, here are a couple of quick thoughts.

  • Many of the Yankee players will be in attendance at the Rodriguez press conference today. Supposedly, they will be there to show support. None will ever tell you, but wouldn't you love to know what they really think of A-Rod?
  • I might as well be upfront about which side of the Joba Chamberlain debate I am on. I believe Joba should start now and close once Mariano Rivera is gone. Here is what I wrote about this recently.

Congrats Ed. Moving on to bigger and better things!!! I’m sure you are really going to miss Chalk over here.

Umm ...

Chalk is good at what he does. He and I, obviously, have vastly different approaches. But, I wish everyone well over at B&C.

Joba

Ed: I love you brutha but chalk this up to another thing we disagree on.

Cound me squarely in the Goose Gossage camp that Joba should be a set-up man and then take over as closer (more on that here).

I know I’m in the minority on this one, but that’s just the way I see it!

No matter what I love the guy and I actually like the Yanks’ chances of having a decent rotation this season (so long as everyone stays healthy)

Man crush?

Cody, thanks for the love man. I was always in the Joba should relieve camp, too. Ultimately, I still believe he should close when Rivera is done — I think that is where he will be best. I think back to last season when Joba was in the pen, and he would go a week or two at a time without pitching any really important innings. This is a great argument, and I see both sides. In the end, Joba’s performance and Mo’s health/effectiveness will settle it.

I love BBV

but hate your Joba idea. Joba should start unless/until he shows he can’t handle the workload.

Ed, what if Joba excels as a starter and Mo happens to break down?

by BigSlim on Feb 17, 2009 12:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That is the thing the Yanks don't want to face

Cashman has hinted that Joba is the first option if Mo were to go down. My guess is he would embrace the role — much more so than setting up. We will just have to see how it plays out. This is a debate that isn’t going away.

Hello there, Ed...

Told ya I’d come around Ed. I’m actually growing tired of B/C, they need to find a way to moderate Chalk’s drivel over there. Enough is enough.

I’m all for Joba getting a chance as a starter, but I think there needs to be a continengy plan in place. I know it’s a taboo subject amongst the fanbase, but we to prepare for the eventuality that Mariano isn’t going to be on the mound forever. I mentioned before that Joba’s delivery gives me cause for concern, but this can be modified to minimize risk.

Regards the A-Rod issue, I wonder whom the players are more frustrated at, Alex or the media ? Jeter seems to be getting tired of answering the same questions repeatedly and I imagine it will only be a short period of time before other players and coaches get tired of the broken record as well. For Alex, I think the best thing for him to do is just come out and perform. Eventually the media vultures will find another carcass to pick over.

Frank

I agree with you about B&C. It’s a large part of the reason I didn’t stay. Anyway, glad to have you here. Hope you will stick around.

Mets fan, but loyal BBVer here

I was just checking out Ed’s first post here, but wanted to throw my 2 cents in about Joba. If I were the Yankees, I would put Joba in the ‘pen. However, I would only do this if Girardi is going to use him in the “relief ace” role that Bill James has talked about, where he’ll come into the most high leverage situations (bases loaded in the 5th, 1 out man on 2nd in the 7th) and pitch for 2 to 3 innings if called for. If Girardi is just gonna use Joba as a strictly 8th inning guy, regardless of game situation, I think he’d be better off staying in the rotation.

Maybe it’s my Mets fandom coloring my perception, since we’ve had a solid rotation the past two years, but to say our bullpen has been weak would be a gross understatement. For what it’s worth, this is how I’m hoping Jerry Manuel uses JJ Putz this year, minus the pitching more than 2 innings part.

CJ

I actually kind of like that approach. Bring your best guys into the toughest situations. How many games get lost in the 6th, 7th, 8th innings by so-so relievers with the front-line guys never actually getting into games. Whether we are talking about Joba or not, that makes me crazy.

Press Conference Reactions ?

Alex’s press conference just finished awhile ago and the talking heads on MLB network are still offering commentary so I’ll throw my two cents in.

In my opinion I think Alex handled it well. The media seems to be salivating over his potential for demise which is pretty much what I would expect from them. What exactly do they expect Alex to do ? Throw himself over the podium sobbing hysterically ? He has already addressed this issue more then ANY other player and no doubt will continue to do so. What more do they want from this guy ? There are 103 players who were also implicated in this affair, where is the collective outrage amongst the media over this ? It’s easy to single out Alex because at times he appears to set himself up for it. I’m curious to see how the mainstream media will react when other players names are leaked, especially if it involves former / current members of the beloved Red Sox.

We'll get a whole bunch

of ‘he wasn’t emotional enough.’ Or, ‘he couldn’t be that naive’ kind of stuff. All the guy can do now is go out and hit. And yes, I want the other 103 names.

No matter what A-Rod sez

it won’t be good enough. He didn’t give us all the truth, u know a hundred reporters will be looking for his cousin and not to know if it helped and i was stoopid isn’t enough, but he did give a few good answers.

Hey Ed

just have to say i vehemently disagree that Joba should be a reliever. i’ve gone over the reasons too many times to count, but they can be found throughout the PA archives.

other than that: welcome!

Thanks for the welcome

Joba makes for a great debate, that’s for sure. Great arguments on both sides. Either way, let’s just all hope he has the great career we are all anticipating.

Joba

Welcome, Ed. I was hoping that you’d make it to Pinstripe Alley sooner or later. In general, I’ve found that the SB Nation blogs are a cut above the rest in both content and user-friendliness. I’m looking forward to seeing the kind of thoughtful commentary here that you’ve brought to BBV.

On Joba’s ultimate role, I think that a lot depends on the continued development of Hughes, IPK, Brackman and the other young arms in the farm system. In the short run, Joba should start, but it’s entirely possible that we could be faced with an abundance of starting pitching such as would make his move to the pen a no-brainer.

Joba Rules ...

in whatever role he’s thrust in, I believe Joba will rule. With the emergence of Bruney and others waiting in the wings, I think Joba’s best role is in the rotation. If the workload proves too taxing, then move him to the pen as the heir apparent to Mo. But give the young man a chance to succeed in a starters role.

No "Top 177 Devil Rays Ever" !

Fantastic move and best of luck. The top Rays crap was beginning to grate on my nerves. B&C had a lot of interesting writers, but DC was starting to monopolize the site.

Well ..

I could start the Top 1000 Yankees ever. LOL!!

Top 1000 Yankees

I bet the list would get real interesting, once you reached, say, 400 or so. I wonder how far down you would have to dig to get to 1000. Ken Clay, maybe? Ross Moschitto?

by django48 on Feb 18, 2009 9:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Or even..

…Horace Clark and Jake Gibbs. Is it me or did almost every Yankee bat below .240 back then?

We could also add Fritz Peterson, but he’d probably then swap with Mike Kekich.

Clarke

would probably rank in the top half. We’ve had much worse.

Here’s the all-time roster.

http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/history/players.jsp?sortby=name&filter=A

No time to count, but it would be interesting to know how many players have actually donned the pinstripes since the old Orioles moved north and became the Highlanders.

But at least..

Unlike DC, you could actually fill it with talent! Just don’t go off on a fau-hawks tear, please. Quality, not quantity.

Nice to see

you over here as well, Coops… seems I’m not the only one who grew tired of reading the same nonsense every day from Chalk.

by FrankDiscussion on Feb 18, 2009 9:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to admit...

that I sometimes enjoyed reading Dan Tobin’s D&C post on the Red Sox. Those could get pretty funny.

by coops2001 on Feb 18, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely not...

I can’t stand looking at Chalk’s 150 post-a-day marathons of garbage. I do enjoy some of Tobin’s and Rosie’s work.
