Grand(erson) Central and what to do next.

That's my prediction for the Sterling home run call.  First on Granderson. I think you can make a case for it both ways, but I like the trade. Granderson's flawed, especially in his inability to hit lefties, but he's great in the clubhouse and he's a better player than he showed last year. I think the Tigers misused him a bit and I think he'll be mpre productive if we're smart enough to bat him 5th, 6th or 7th. Bottom line, if Austin Jackson turned out to be Curtis Granderson I wouldn't have been disappointed so its like getting the reward without the risk.

This tips the Yankees' hand that they're not in on Roy Halladay. I can't believe they'd give up 3 of their top 4 prospects in one offseason.

This move also means that the offers to Damon and Matsui are going to be below market value. It'll be up to them how much they want to stay. If we're really going to do the rotating DH thing we need to build up a pretty strong bench. Otherwise if a starter gets hurt we're looking at 2 weak bats every day. One advantage of not having a regular DH though is that it would leave the door open for Montero to come up and DH in August and September.

I'd like to know what they do for th DH situation?

Damon I think is #1, cuz he could be the DH and LF platoon when someone else needs to DH, so IMO he’d be ideal.

Matsui should be option two, cuz if Damon is a no go, why not go with a guy who can handle NY (I think they should sign Mats no matter what…Having Granderson now as the CF? Imagin him in place of Melky/Gardner, with Damon and Mats still there).

Option 3, they need someone to DH primarily and play the field part time. I’d go with someone like Jermaine Dye.

Power RH bat. If he’s not DHing and on the bench, that could be a PH move for Granderson late in games, then move Melky to CF, Swish to LF (or Gardner…not picky…) and Dye To RF. Not the greatest defense, but if a PH is necessary, why not.

Lots of options, but its nice having a real CF for a change.

I agree with

Option 1 and 2, but i want no part of Dye on this team. How about Option 3 Nick Johnson. I would love his OBP in the 2 hole.

by yankeechaser on Dec 9, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

what's wrong with Dye?

He’d be a DH canidate and a part time RF when Swisher needs a break/stinks.

Nick Johnson would be a squard peg in a round hole.

I’d like to have him, yea, but there’s no spot for him. I doubt he can play OF (if he can play OF tho…then I’ll sign up for another go around with Nick)

Our Steve Smith is better than yours.

Damn right, better than yours.....

Dye

His numbers are OK, (aside from the last three months of last year.) but I just do not like him. His D is getting to a Matsui level. I think we would be signing an aging declining player. I doubt Cash will do this b/c he wants the opposite of Dye on this team.

The reason Mats may not be back is because we want a DH to be able to play the field i’m just not sure Dye has it in him anymore.

If you want Dye I would say trade for Milton Bradley, I know i just went there. I think the veterans here could keep him in line, and he crushes Lefty pitching (even last year). I mean if he is getting dumped for nothing and they are eating salary, I think i would take a flier out on him.

by yankeechaser on Dec 9, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the Milton Bradley thing in spirit...

but the guy is an a-hole and I don’t want him near the clubhouse.

I guess I should say I want Mats back on the team. I just thing the Samurai Sword be it on the bench or the DH, is just too much to not re-up.

That said, I say Jermaine Dye simply cuz he’d be a decent DH option, if all else fails (re: Damon and Matsui).

The best benefit of Dye ,like I said, is that he’s not in a wheelchair like Matsui, so he can steal a few games out there in the OF if need be. That’s all.

The Designated Hitter position is designed for players like Dye, those that are declining, yet can still rake.

"It ain't over till its over"---

When in doubt...throw it to Steve Smith.

+1

the Yankees had a very good team chemistry-wise this year and I want them to keep that up next year. Why add a headache like Bradley in there? So he can amuse us by throwing the ball in the stands with less than two outs with the bases loaded? Because that would make me want to throw him off a cliff if he did that with the Yanks.

Bradley is a headache and I want no part of him on the Yankees. If you’re bringing in a DH, then it should be Matsui and/or Damon. Nobody else

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 9, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

haha

I’m glad I’m not the only one crazy enough to consider Bradley. As much of an asshole as the guy is, he can f’n hit. I wonder if guys like Jeter, A-Rod, Swisher, AJ, and Tex could keep him light hearted and under control.

by Wraithpk on Dec 9, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

as a DH...he'd incredible on this team.

the ‘combustibility’ of his peronality…how does that fit?

He wouldn’t have to be what he was in Chicago tho….

I doubt that the Yanks go after him. They never seem to take chances on character risks like that (even Strawberry was just a coke-head….he had a reason…Bradley is just flat out nuts).

"It ain't over till its over"---

When in doubt...throw it to Steve Smith.

wasn’t his nickname with Tigers fans Grandy? I think we should stick to that

pitching

I agree with FreeBradshaw’s other posts that we don’t need to think about Halladay, at all.

Since we just traded a starter and 2 relievers away, does anyone else think the Yankees might be in the market to pick up pitchers like Sheets, Harden, and such, to throw in the bullpen? Let them work out whatever issues they have the way they did with Hughes and Joba (and they tried with Wang before he got hurt again)? Maybe pick up Lackey as a starter. The rotation selection, in my opinion, is dependent on Pettite returning. Even if he does return, do they pick up another starter to have just in case (and that depends on whether they want to depend on Gaudin if anyone should miss a start for any reason not related to inning limits, which we’re told there will be none for Joba and Hughes).

I don’t know enough about the pitching prospects to know if we have anyone that might be brought up to pitch if anyone gets injured. Feel free to enlighten me if you have any facts about that.

Also, they didn’t give up 3 of their top 4 prospects, as far as I’m concerned. They gave up 2 mediocre relievers that had trouble after injuries or staying consistent, a starter that probably needs more development to be a ML ready pitcher, and a top CF prospect that is an unknown quantity.

by phonty on Dec 8, 2009 11:17 PM EST reply actions

That..

IPK scares the hell out of me. I don’t think he will be able to pitch in the rotation for us, in the AL east.
Coke? – Replaceable arm in the pen.
AJax? We got Granderson for someone who, at best, is projected to be Granderson (lite).

I think that sounds good to me.

I’m hoping we get at least 1 #4 guy, a high-risk, high reward guy. Between him, Joba, Hughes, Wang (I admit, it’s a prejudice, but I hope he’s back) Aceves and Mitre (gulp on the last two). i think we could probably go through the season. Then, when Pettite retires, we can consider getting another starter next year, where a lot of premium starters will be on the market.

Out of Sheets, Duscherer and Harden, Harden probably has the best stuff, and Duscherer probably has the best chance of going through the entire season.

by Vancouverguy on Dec 9, 2009 2:24 AM EST up reply actions

Sheets/Harden/Duch

I think of Sheets, Harden and Ducscherer, Sheets has both the best stuff and the best change of pitching the full season with his surgically repaired arm and having shut it down for an entire season. He’d also be the most expensive, though. Harden might make 30 starts but he’s going to give you 150 innings in those 30 starts which doesn’t fit since we already have Joba and/or Hughes with innings issues. I like the Duchscherer idea since he can start or relieve, but he did have issues with depression so I’m not sure pitching in NY is ideal for him. If it were up to me, I’d rather just give Joba and Hughes the 4 and 5 spots. If we wind up needing a back-end starter, we can go out and get one at the deadline.

by Let's Talk About Tex Baby on Dec 9, 2009 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

Well,

At least we’re not worrying about Harden. I agree with your thoughts about Duch, NY media/expectations and clinical depression probably doesn’t go well together.

We’re left with Sheets, and with the unfortunate circumstances of Wolf taking 3 year ~30mil, we may be paying a more than that for him. Although, it makes paying Lackey 16-7/ year seem a little more appetizing.

by Vancouverguy on Dec 9, 2009 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

BCash is an idiot if

Cashman is an idiot if he pulls the Hallday trade by giving up on Montero + Joba/Hughes + Others. Cashman has already given up AJax and others for Granderson. I cannot imagine on giving up the remaining top prospects for Hallyday. For sure, Montero will become a stud. At this time, NYY does not really need Halladay to win and giving up the future is rather stupid.

by yankeesintexas on Dec 9, 2009 8:27 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

AJAX is one thing, but Montero is on a whole different planet. Montero is a potential, 50 HR MVP candidate. You don’t give that up for a player you don’t need! I’m torn on this trade because I really did like AJAX, and I guess I’m good with just letting it play out. But I will be really ticked off if Montero is gone as well. He should be untouchable. Already one top prospect is gone. Don’t give up a second one (and much better one) please!!!
