This moves the 40 man roster down to 38.

[editor's note: the Yanks receive Washington's Rule 5 pick, which is the first overall selection.]

I always like Bruney, and he’s still young. Hopefully the move the NL and some good health will put his career back on track. Clears $1M in payroll and a roster spot- a necessary move.

clears more than 1 mil

with his second year of arbitration he would command around 3 mil
good move Cashman

The list of pitchers that had long, successful careers while giving up 6.2 walks per nine innings is short – actually, I’m not sure there’s anybody on it. That Bruney gave the Yankees 144 innings of well above-average ERA baseball almost defies the odds, and they are wise to quit while they’re ahead.

Nothing like waking up

and reading such happy news. ADIOS Bruney!

wow

how sad are the Nats that Bruney could be their closer?

too bad...

he showed some really good stuff early in the season before he got hurt, I was disappointed he never got it back.

Traded for the firs toverall Rule V pick.

Very sneaky Cashman, very sneaky.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

wow....

What a great move. Could end up being another Betemit for Swisher move, lol.

No more Bruney

how sad. At least he got himself a ring. I have a feeling I’m not gonna miss him all that much.

So who's the best player on the rule 5 draft then?

it’s been a while since we could say that the Yankees get a first overall pick in anything. All they do is win!!!

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 7, 2009 6:18 PM EST reply actions

depends...

not sure the overall guidlines of who is exempt from it…

but I know that whoever isn’t ‘exempt’ and is not on someone’s 40 man roster, can get picked up off the rule 5.

Also, I think the guy has to stay on the 25 man (or is this the 40 man too??)roster the whole year in order to stay on the team that got him in the rule 5.

The Yanks lost Ivan Nova to the rule 5, but got him back after he didn’t stick with San Diego.

Should be intriguing.

The Royals goy the Mexicutioner Joakim Soria in the rule 5…so finding a good player is not unheard of.

there are a couple of interesting players

i personally think they Yankees will take RHP Aneury Rodriguez from the Rays, who has a great athletic piutchers frame (6’3 180) and throws a low 90s fastball with two plus pitches (not that I have seen him live or anything but I’ve reazd some stuff about him when looking up rule V draft standouts)
and remember, players like Victorino and Uggla have been players that have been rule V players so we should hope for the best

Good move

The Yankees were probably planning on non-tendering Bruney anyway so getting anything for him was a steal. Moving him frees up a spot on the roster for a younger reliever like Melancon or a free agent. As for Bruney, I think he has a chance to do well in the NL if he can stay healthy. He’s hard to hit when he’s on and the walks don’t punish you as much there.

I agree

Also, your user name is brilliant!

Win-win

Nats get a closer with a 4.70 ERA; Yankees get their pick of the litter for a starter/reliever for a better than a lifetime 4.68 FIP.
