New York Yankee notes: The Boss, and Ben Sheets
All over the Inter-Google today, reporters and bloggers are making a big fuss over the fact that aging owner George Steinbrenner actually attended the New York Yankees organizational meetings Thursday.
The only writer I read this morning who actually had a unique take on Steinbrenner's presence was LoHud's Chad Jennings. He laid out the five things The Boss would have demanded if he was still really 'The Boss.' Let's just say the list includes Roy Halladay and Joe Mauer.
Speaking of Jennings, he also posted a well thought-out 'Thumbs up, thumbs down' to a lot of the Hot Stove ideas being tossed around.
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick gave his list of the top bargain-bin free agents. The guy on Crasnick's list I am most intrigued by? Ben Sheets. If the Yankees can't have Halladay or John Lackey. The guy is always an injury risk, but he is also a front of the rotation type starter when healthy.

Can't have it both ways ...
Can’t be a front of a rotation guy when you are missing significant portions of every MLB season. That is the curious case of Ben Sheets. Given his legendary injury history, picking him up would be akin to the Yankees grabbing say, Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright in the same season. OMG, imagine if we actually did something that ridiculous?

True
I just think that if you look at him as a back of the rotation guy in New York and you can get him w/out spending a lot it might be worth the flier.

Acquiring Ben Sheets under the pretense of him being a reclamation project is different than the long-term signings of Pavano and Wright of which they were going to be heavily counted on. Only 31, Sheets, in my opinion, can be a top-of-rotation guy IF he can stay healthy. That is a big IF. And for how much?

Not for a lot
Sit tight, let it play out, if you don’t make a big move and no one is willing to pay the guy big dollars (which they shouldn’t), pluck him off the scrap heap cheap in January and give it a shot.

Sheets
someone in the mid market (Texas, Seattle, Angels, White Sox, Twins) I can see signing Sheets to a 2 year deal.
A 6 – 10 million dollar incentive laiden deal with an option for 2nd year is what I would offer for Sheets.
Ed, that was
actually Sam Borden who penned those two LoHud pieces.

If the market doesnt play out well ben sheets can do some justice for us...
But at 31 I can see a couple of team’s who would take a chance on a starter with his capabilities….
I say you always take a chance with prooven starters if the price is right….but just because your prooven doesn’t mean you’ll survive on the big stage…..
It’s difficult…..
