Rating Cashman's Offseason
It's been an eventful offseason so far, but the type of moves Cashman has done have left me very pleasantly surprised. Let me explan :
The first splash of the offseason was obviously the Granderson trade. He pretty much swapped Austin Jackson for what he could have been for the Yankees. In a three way deal, dealing away 3 of our players, he sent the message that the Yankees are mindful of depleeting their farm system, but won't hang on to their prospects like they're the next Bernie Williams or Derek Jeter. Austing Jackson could have been as good as Curtis Granderson. But he also could be a 4th outfielder for a bottom of the table team 2-3 years from now. Cashman also had to give up Ian Kennedy and Phil Coke to do the trade, but both will probably be league-average players a couple years from now. We won't wait for the best Yankee prospect to come up, just because he's the best Yankee prospect.
Then we waived our (apparent) goodbye's to Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon. Cashman yet again shows he has no room for sentiment, and is focused on helping the team win today and for the future. He then goes and replaces Matsui with Nick Johnson. He got the team better AND cut payroll with these 2 moves and 2 non-moves. Our GM doesn't go with "nostalgia", and former Yankees.
And lastly the Vasquez trade. Cash trades away Robbie's pal, and our home-grown CF Melky Cabrera (and others). Yet again, we got a steal of a trade. We solidified our rotation, and did what needed to be done. We also solved the plethora of outfielders problem. But what was strange about the trade was bringing Vasquez back to the Yankees after what he did here last time around. It seems like he did the trade in a cold and calculating way, looking at Vasquez as our potential #3 or #4 starter, not as the failure he was here last time around.
So what it's starting to seem like is that Cashman is going about our team with a cold sense of cunning. He does what needs to be done, does it well, and doesn't seem to care for popular opinion (unlike the other GM) that lies in the popularity of the players. Instead he gives the Yankees the best team in baseball, and puts them in prime position to repeat in '10.

Not sure I agree.....
Vasquez deal still doesn’t still well with me..the only thing good about it is that he’s here for 2010 only and that it may still leave room to sign Damon.
There is something to be said about being tested in big games on a NY stage. We know how Javy has done in the past….
Cashman is the man
Cashman has done an outstanding job. Vasquez is exactly what we need for the #4 spot. Granderson will be better in center and at the plate than Melky. None of the guys we gave up would have been a huge factor for us now or ever.

Cash has definitely grown into
his own. Some smart decisions so far. Jumping the gun on Johnson is really the only move I question, as I think Damon would’ve signed for ~ 2/$18M. If he gets Damon on a one-year deal, though, I will take it all back. Given the thefts he has perpetrated on the Braves and Tigers, I would now love to see him pick Boras’ pocket.

Damon isn't gone yet
Yanks need a LF now, and Damon is the best option available. Holliday/Bay will cost too much, and Gardner is not a starter. That leaves Damon and DeRosa. I’ll take Johnny.
Letting Matsui go wasn't necessarily good.
At the price Matsui signed with the Angels, I think we would have been well served to keep him. The man is pure clutch, and a consummate professional. Apparently a great guy, too, porn notwithstanding! If NJ continues with his high OBP thing at the plate, he’s a nice addition to the team, and I think the DH role will help him stay healthy… still, Matsui is one heck of a talent, plus we know he can deliver even under all the pressure NY can bring… maybe even thrives on it.
B+
Would have been an A+ but I perfer Matsui over Johnson

me too
especially given the similarity of the prices they each got. For just 6.5 million? There’s no reason Matsui shouldn’t be back in Pinstripes.
I agree..
I like Mats too.
Yet…was $6.5 his asking price? Would he want MORE to just DH (I think he may play the field in LAAAAAA).
Not sure. I’ve not heard a firm offer that the Yanks laid out there for him.
Yet….Godzirra’s clutchness for the Yanks should not have been underrated.
I do no think it was as cut and dry as “well..they signed Johnson for 5.5..why not Mats for 6.5?”
I think they just got beat to the punch. Maybe the Yanks offered 5.5….the Angels 6.5…and Matsui bit?

A big factor
as I understand it, was Matsui’s desire to at least play the field on a part-time basis. Apparently the Yankees said “DH or go play for someone else.” So, he went to play for someone who will put him on the field, even just part-time or back up or whatever.
pretty much..
and the difference is with him…there’s was obviously a viable offer on the table for Mats.
Look at Damon..if he had an offer on the table..you think he’d deal with the Yankees ‘crap’?
No..why wait?
Matsui didn’t. I’m sure he could’ve gotten 6.5 out of the Yanks…100% sure. He didn’t at first…and he did get it from the Angels.
Mats said however you say “F You” in Japanese…and left.

I agree for the most part
I would’ve loved to get Matsui back, but in reality he is one step aways from having a kneww blowout and being done for the season. Playing left it may happen, so it was I think win win letting him go. Nick will hopefully stay healthy and if he does, I have no doubt he will be productive. Cash really has done a great job, not only improving the team but getting younger.
