Best Yankee of the Decade?
Over at my old blog, The Pinstriper, I had a poll going on. It asked the following question: Who was the Best Yankee of the Decade?
So, I made a tournament out of it. The four finalists, unsurprisingly, were Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, and Mariano Rivera.
Out of those four choices, who do YOU think was the best Yankee of the decade?
Vote and argue in the comments!

Jeter is the clutch captain….Jorge is old reliable…and pettite…..closed more playoffs series for us then anybody!….and is the winningest postseason pitcher of all time….
Its between El Captain, Mo…and Andy…I’m torn….

Stuck
I was VERY stuck on this when I created the poll. I did vote on it, however, and I voted for Jeter.
1. Jeter
2. Rivera
3. Pettitte
4. Posada
’
In my opinion
Hmm...I might want my vote back
Andy is DQed for his years in Houston, and even if he shouldn’t be in the conversation.
I initially voted for Jeter, which is right in terms of pure value: Jeter (46 WAR), Posada (39), Rivera (33). All three were the best at their position this decade (considering that A-Rod only played for half at SS and wasn’t on the Yanks for 4 years).
In terms of who is the least REPLACEABLE, it’s Rivera. The next best closer in the league this decade was probably Joe Nathan (21 WAR). Rivera was 50% better than the 2nd best at his position, and he is the best pure closer EVER. If you take 12 wins off Jeter or Posada, you’ll find plenty of other SS and C.
There's no wrong answer between...
Jeter and Mo…
I would say Jeet, but that would make Mo 1A in my book
Also, how little love does A-Rod get?
He won two MVPs and a ring with the Yankees. He’s the third most important Yankee by WAR this decade (38 WAR).
SI also came out with its “20 greatest athletes list of the 2000s” today. Pujols was 6th. Jeter was 8th, Rivera was 11th…A-Rod was 20th!! I guess those Gillette commercials are worth an extra 5 HR/season.
was asking the same question
For the purposes of this poll, A-Rod as to be in the conversation. The SI ranking is ridiculous. Three MVPs, 435 HRs, 1240 RBIs – what else does it take to crack the top 10?

Jeter. He’s had 2 MVP caliber seasons as a shortstop. Arod is a close second. Mo is third- he’s great, but he still only pitches an inning per save. A closer can’t compare to a position player.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Except when he pitches 2 innings, or even 3.
Mo pitches one inning per save because that’s what he’s asked to do. But when the going gets tough, he’s often been asked for 2 innings, and even 3 innings. (Remember what he did in the clinching game of the 2003 ALCS?) He does what he has to, and does it better than any other reliever in the history of the game.
As icing on the cake, if memory serves, he even drove in the game-winning RBI in his own win against the Mets this past season, against THEIR closer! That’s absolutely surreal.
This is tough because Jeter has been hands-down great, too. What decides it for me is this: if Jeter fails at the plate or blows a play in the field during a postseason game, there’s still a decent chance we can win that game. If Mo blows a postseason relief appearance, we lose, end of story.
I disagree, re Mo
I think Mo more than compares to a position player. He is THE most clutch player on the team — on any team – in MLB !! We look at clutch players as the ones who hit when needed. Mo prevents hits when needed — same difference I think. Is there any team, ever, who feels more secure when, for all these years, one player on their team comes into the game? Mo is the definition of consistency and reliability, and if it weren’t for him — both his incredible ability AND the intimidation factor he brings to a game — the Yankees would have lost a lot more games. And I don’t care who you replaced him with — only he brings the “Mo Factor” to the game LOL.
Should have 2
MVP’s in my opinion. It blows my mind to think that in the last 7 championship years the Yankees have had they have ZERO MVP’s. Back in the day you didn’t win an MVP award without having at least gone to the World Series…I thought Jeter should have won in ’99 and ’06…
The Captain
but Mo is better than just 2nd.

I assume this is theBest Yankee of the Decade; NCD?
(Non-Cervelli Division.)
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
Everyday players are much much more valuable than pitchers
Derek & Jorge contibuted in thousands of games and 10,000+ innings both at the bat and in the field. Andy and Mo are terrific contributors as well but in hundreds of games and innings (Andy is probably a little over 1,000 innings) and only from the mound. Removing emotion and voting objectively, there is no doubt Jeter & Posada are far better MVP candidates. I voted for Jorge because the unique skills and the beating C’s take are underappreciated.
Is value "production," or is value "scarcity?"
If it’s the former, it’s Jeter; if it’s the latter, it’s Mo.

Value in total contibution to the team's success
It has absolutely nothing to do with scarcity. C’s and SS’s that hit like Jorge & Derek are much more scarce than great relievers or even great closers. Jeter & Posada.have contributed something like 14,000 mostly good innings in the decade. Mo is the greatest closer of all time bar none, but he still only had a hand in roughly 800 mostly good innings. There is no comparison unless you let emotion rule you. Mo is nothing without the 8 innings of help he gets before he comes in. It is a team afterall. There is a reason why there are only a few relievers in the hall of fame. Relievers are the most abundant and least valuable assets to a baseball team.
But you know, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some ‘people’ voted for Nixon.

Jeter
because I’m interpreting best as value of contribution. I wanted to vote for Mo though because I do not doubt that he will forever be the greatest closer in baseball.
Both Jeter and Mo are among the very best at their respective positions.
Very tough to compare the 2 especially when their positions are so far apart…..
Yankees all day.

Mo for me
but u could argue Derek because he is an everyday player I guess. But the irreplaceable factor gives it to Mo by a hair IMO.
Anybody in the mood for a repeat?

Mo
We will never see a closer like Mo ever again in our lifetimes. You think we’d have #27 if we had Lidge and the Phils had Mo? Doubtful.
COMPLETELY off topic
But possibly the funniest thing I have ever read.

Well
I clearly marked it as off-topic. Is a thread on a fanblog about the best Yankees of the past decade supposed to be sacrosanct? Lighten up buddy, there is plenty of time for you to stair at your fathead poster of Johnny Damon on your basement wall before pitchers and catchers are called up.

i'm not upset
just curious.
I don’t have any fatheads or anything to stare at, I’m perfectly content reading PA every day to get my Yankee and baseball fixes.
Jeter
Then Mo, then A-Rod, then Posada, then Pettitte (though Mussina is close). If A-Rod played the whole decade with the Yankees he would win in a runaway.
Depends on what you mean by "best"
If by “best” you mean valuable, then its Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, Moose, and Pettitte, in no particular order. In terms of adding wins over replacement, Mo is further down on the list.
If by “best” you mean most gifted in terms of baseball talent, then its Mo and A-Rod and maybe Jeter.

In other news.
I’ve noticed how closely the song Godzilla by Blue Closter Cult fits with Matsui.
