I don't know if 'deal' means signing or trade, but stay tuned...

We've heard the Yanks wanted Carlos Zambrano earlier this off-season. Could he be on the block again?

Update 9:51 p.m.: Harang is not being sought.

Update 10:14 p.m.: Yankees close to a 'non-salary dump' deal.

Update 11:41 p.m.: Not Zambrano, according to Feinsand and Heyman.

Another pitcher?

I hope it’s Sheets. More upside than any pitcher on the market. No rumors as to who Travis?

just added a bit

about Zambrano. have no idea though.

by Travis G on Dec 21, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt it's Zambrano

Cubs are trying to compete. They won’t trade away their ace for nothing. I’ll be pleased if it is though.

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 21, 2009 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

Could be Harang apparently

by Brandon C. on Dec 21, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply actions

I hope not

Harang has never pitched in the AL, and hasn’t won more than 6 games since 2007. Playing on the Reds may have something to do with that, but he just doesn’t impress me much.

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Zambrano declined to drop his no trade to come to NY his agent said

So I have no use for this big fat pile of crap. You are either with us or against us. He can enjoy playing for the underachieving Cubs.

harang not targeted

hmmm. i wonder who the yanks are talking to.

I’ve said before, and say again, Derek Lowe is a gamble, but if the price is as low as Melky Cabrera, it’s a gamble I’ll take.

Interesting situation here for the Yankees. If Harang is out it looks like it is probably Lowe. If not, who can it be?

by Brandon C. on Dec 21, 2009 9:59 PM EST reply actions

So any guesses?

Who do the Yankees get? Who do they give up?

Melky + for Lowe? Who plays left then? (Granderson w/ Gardner in center) or sign Holliday?

by Monotonousblob on Dec 21, 2009 10:00 PM EST reply actions

If they trade Melky

Then the door for Damon is reopened if he still wants to sign. If this really is trade talks, and Melky Is involved, then maybe Damon still has a shot to stay a Yankee after all. Hope so.

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 21, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

Heres a name that has no prior rumor or any credibility to be considered a rumor: Bronson Arroyo. Yankees were reported to the Reds, they wanted Arroyo in July, maybe looking for him now? Just throwing names out there.

Otherwise, the obvious player looks like Lowe.

just curious

Looks like no Lowe. Maybe a Cubs pitcher for Melky? This is a mystery!

Blanton

I hope they go for Joe Blanton, he has AL experience, eats up innings, isnt too expensive and could probably aquire him without giving up a top prospect, aka montero

by Da Shiz on Dec 21, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

I just don't get...`

How it would benefit the Yankees to acquire a mediocre to bad pitcher who makes a lot of money like Lowe, Arroyo, Harang or Blanton…not saying its one of them. Oh well, right now I basically trust Cashman until he gives me a reason not to.

by Let's Talk About Tex Baby on Dec 21, 2009 10:46 PM EST reply actions

It’s all about who they get, and who they give up. If they get a passable 4th starter type without giving up a major prospect or current major leaguer, that clearly makes them better (and probably ends their major wheeling and dealing for this off-season).

by long time listener on Dec 21, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

it seems to make more sense to sign a Sheets, Duch, Bedard in a low-risk move than give up prospects in a trade for what looks to be a mediocre pitcher. but i’ll withhold judgment until a deal happens.

by Travis G on Dec 21, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

I'd like a trade for a strong middle reliever

The Yankees are a bit thin on proven bullpen pitching right now and I’d like to see them trade for a reliever, should they trade. A reliever makes more sense in a trade because there are no strong reliever on the FA market.

If they want a starting pitcher then go get Sheets or someone like that. He’s better than anyone they’re going to get in a trade anyway.

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 21, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

Plus a reliever puts a cap on Hughes/Joba to the ’pen for at least the first half of the season.

Blanton sounds good so does Lilly

by Brandon C. on Dec 21, 2009 10:48 PM EST reply actions

Looks like it is too late for that but I completely agree Travis

by Brandon C. on Dec 21, 2009 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Well the rumor is that the Yanks are doing “something big”….Blanton isn’t big unless we are talking about his physique. Zach Duke maybe? Just a thought.

by PublicMenace on Dec 21, 2009 11:19 PM EST reply actions

Maybe. I’m lukewarm on Duke. I guess he’s got 2 more years of team control, but he’s been pretty mediocre in the National League. His strong 2009 looks like a fluke to me, and I’m wary of buying high.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

by jscape2000 on Dec 21, 2009 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

Last year was ok and his only other good year was the first year he came up. But he is a lefty and is young. I think he has upside and if he’s gonna be the 4th/5th starter I think it’s a big upgrade. Dave Eiland could probably work on him and with the offense the Yankees have he has more of a chance to win games. Pirates & Yanks always seem to deal. That’s the only reason why I was thinking Duke.

by PublicMenace on Dec 21, 2009 11:34 PM EST up reply actions

any chance this whole thing is a bluff?

Maybe Cashman’s been trying to sign a FA pitcher (like Sheets), but wants to get it done before Christmas, and this trade rumor is a way to get the hypothetical guy to agree to their offer.

by long time listener on Dec 21, 2009 11:24 PM EST reply actions

There's a chance

We don’t know much, so I suppose anything is a chance right now.

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 21, 2009 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt this many nat'l writers

would have gotten on it without multiple sources, and if it’s a bluff it hurts Cash’s credibility in the long run.

"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."

you're probably right

But the fact that no one can put any names in this deal makes me wonder. Of course, it’s only been about 3.5 hours since the story broke.

by long time listener on Dec 21, 2009 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

HaHa got ya

I wish we could pull off this deal and sign OHudson to play second

by YankeesJets on Dec 21, 2009 11:39 PM EST reply actions

I thought so…it was actually believable because I was thinking the Hudson signing if you were right!

by PublicMenace on Dec 21, 2009 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

I would love to get Kemp for Cano

I wanted that deal last year to go down. Wouldnt it be great if Yanks pulled off a deal for Josh Johnson? He would be a great fit.

by YankeesJets on Dec 21, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

That actually would be a really nice deal. I never thought about him. I’m all for either him or Duke. And they should still sign Sheets. Can never have too many pitchers.

by PublicMenace on Dec 21, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

I would rather get Arroyo than Harang

Harang is younger and cheaper but Arroyo has pitched in AL and Harang hasnt been very good.

Whatever it is it’s probably pretty big…How many times do you observe silence on a player like matt holliday?….not even a RUMOR!….

If memory serves correct Texiera got a nice contract from santa last chirstmas….wouldn’t be surprised if cashman wanted to get it over with before christmas to settle player X in……

I would do it

Johnson is the next big thing. This guy will win a Cy Young in the near future. Joba is not as good as we all originally thought. Sure he is young but he is not Johnson. Montero is our best prospect but we have plenty of other decent catching prospects. If this deal went down, it would be a great Christmas gift, unless its Hughes/Montero, than I say no.

I’d do it. It would hurt but I would do it, especially if there’s a contract extension involved.

This is all very interesting

I have NO CLUE who they could be talking about.

Would we trade away Swisher to get a #3 starter, then sign Holliday in part with Swish’s money? Who would play RF if that happened?

Swisher is not irreplaceable

Lets not put him on that big a pedestal. He did some nice things last year, but he is also very streaky.

by YankeesJets on Dec 22, 2009 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

Nobody is putting swisher on any high horses...

But you get rid of swisher you get rid of versatility and 27 hr a season hour….still at his prime..

And most importantly the chemistry is right…and I don’t wanna loose the production and the character.

Especially if we trade him and don’t sign holliday?….who else is out there?

Looking at Feinsand's latest post, other than Josh Johnson

Im not too excited. Looks like a who’s who of pitchers that are past their experation date. Sorry Big Z is overrated and always seems like a clubhouse nightmare. If you guys think AJ/Posada dont get along, imagine Zambrano/Posada. New Yankee Stadium might finally host a big fight if those two are battery mates.

Don't Worry

Cervelli is as of this second the backup catcher. Only worry if the Yankees sign a Jose Molina, or backup MLB catcher last year type. Rivera is more of a safety net for if Cervelli gets hurt
